So now if you are a mod creator you can sell your stuff on Steam Workshop. Of course maybe 30% maybe less or maybe more is a steam and probably game developer share [PEOPLE SAY VALVE'S SHARE IS 75%. WHAT A SHAME]. What do you think about it?
But the biggest problem that this awesome thing the PC community has - a free modding opportunities may disappear at all

Gabe wants more cheeseburgers
Good now modders can be paid for their hard work
Other option

Wait, what? Valve completely lost their minds, this is a ultimately dumb idea.

I don't get the people voting for "Good now modders can be paid for their hard work". Modding was never about getting paid for anything. It's supposed to be about loving a game so much that you want to add to it, to add things that will make it more enjoyable for others. And Valve does not give a flying fuck about people being rewarded for hard work. If they did this would have been a donate option. Not a choice between "give it free" or "ask for cash". This is all about Gaben making more money.

This. Modders always could add donate button in their mod description. So noone can tell that there was no way to support our favourite mods when we wanted to.

Valve probadly loves answering DMCA takedowns and dealing with legal issues...

I mean modders will make weapons based on movies, and Hollywood is not the place to find generous people. I sence this will hurt valve more then help

I see people on the Skyrim hub saying modders only get 25%. The rest is probably split between Valve and Bethesda.

yup, people are naive if they think this is done to help modders or help the community. This is just another money making scheme by Valve, to make money of other people's work.

I dont understand why is that a Bad thing ( as long as there is option to give it for free )
Just cause people can now charge you few $ for the content doesnt mean the end of modding imo , Thats IF they dont remove the option to just have it for free ofc ... then things might get bad :|

( i havent really read the new update stuff ... so sorry if its mentioned there )

it is bad because, as you can already see on the skyrim workshop, people are charging 1$ for a weapon skin copied from DOTA 2, or more for a crappy companion that took them 5 minutes to create. It is bad because, according to comments on steam, modders are actually getting only 25% of this, the rest goes to valve and the devs. and it's bad because modding was and should be about loving games and wanting to make them better, not milk a quick $ off your fellow gamers.

um , the way i see it is .. avoid the people who just look for a quick buck ... and support the guys who actually worked hard on making stuff for the comunity .
I dont understand why its bad thing ( even if its 25% ) , to support a person who devoted some of his spare time to creating something for the community .

I Understand the pov that modding is bout the community blablabal must be free .. etc .
But time isnt free , and the way i see it ... if people actually want to charge you for their stuff... they would try to devote more then 5 min into copy-pasting a weapon out of dota into Skyrim for example ... and make you actually want to spend a dollar on what they created.

It may be chaotic for the 1st couple of months ... but i can see it stabilizing soon enough .

It is a bad thing because Steam is taking most of the money while the modder gets scraps. Again, if you want to support modders many of the bigger projects have a donation option. I'v donated to projects in the past. I'm not gonna buy into this bullshit and put more money into Gaben's pocket for other people's work.

Modding was never meant to be a fulltime job, if people want to make a living getting this shitty 25% won't help them with that. They're not even getting actual money, they're getting steam wallet money which, you guessed it, will also make it's way into valve's pocket when they buy games with it. Modding was always a hobby and should remain a hobby, not become Third Party DLC. If people want to help with money, and many will, ask for donations, don;t lock stuff behind a set price paywall. Again, if they need money they should simply ask for donations, there's no shame in that.

The biggest issues with selling mods is that they break every time a game is patched, what happens if a modder can't fix it anymore or won't fix it anymore? Beyond the 24 hour refund there's no refunds just like there's no refunds for anything else on steam. What happens if a modder decides he's bored and wants to move on to another project, like many do all the time? None of them will continue to sell forever and they're getting scraps anyway, after a certain point those scraps will stop being enough of an incentive for them to continue. Most mods are work in progress and the system valve put in place is exactly the same as early access, you buy at your own risk and the person you buy from has no obligation to finish/fix the work. Donations would fix all these issues, because then you would not be buying a product, you'd be helping out a person who's work you enjoy.

No, you didn't get anything since, you don't bother reading other people's opinions and you don't try to understand their POV. I read your opinion, understood it and gave you counterarguments. Simple as that

In the end people are actually bothered by this they will vote with their wallets and will keep the shitstorm going until Valve caves in. If not then people deserve any other bad side effect this change may bring down the line.

Why is it bad that people get the right to Sell stuff they Created ?
I dont understand why is everyone overreacting .

Tbh the way i see it is , if someone actually want to make a decent few $ out of it ... he will work on making a decent content so people actually want to buy it .

Yeah its just 25% , but in the same time part of the other 75% goes directly to the devs ... which is not a bad thing for me either .

I srsly think you are overreacting .

companies want a cut from mods (modders only get 25%)..thats why there is no "donation"
companies are to lazy to create new stuff by themselfs, so they want to encourage modders

So before they invest ressources to create new game content..they found a better way: Let others do the work and even get money from it...

TL;TR lazy and greedy gaming companies

"With the launch of paid mods in Skyrim, you can now support mod authors that are creating top quality items and amazing new experiences for your game."

Can support modders with lousy 25% of the income, cus Valve is sharking off 75% lmao.

This is.... I'm... just lost for words. I've never cried over day 1 DLCs or high DLC prices or in-game transactions... etc. Not to say I agreed with those practices but I never really cared much. But this, for some reason, just makes me mad. I don't even use many mods but I feel like this is an all new level of greed.

I see light at he end of THE GUT! Free mods is evil for ... you know. Good people should just do nothing for evil to prevail! So folks, just don't participate in the turmoil. Both users and modmakers. Feeling like to support a good modder?! Lots of conventional means are available! No pasaran!

For the record: it is not valve that takes a 75% cut. Valve has already stated they take the same cut as on all microtransactions, which I believe is 30% (while in turn they providing the service). It is Bethesda who takes a 45% cut (they can choose how much they want from the remaining 70%). In return they don't really provide anything and already make good money from additional sales from the mods.

(Yes, steam is still to blame for not providing a real pwyw option.)
