What do you think about it?
Mods for money?
...
Sounds like a NOPE for me.
On one hand, it's fine for me that people who make good mods can make money for it. But on the other hand, I don't think people will appreciate this sudden change. Nobody wants to pay for something that was always free.

Heard people are actually downloading stuff from Nexus Mods and submitting as their own.
So at first I thought it was a good idea (considered start my own mods to make some cash) but now its just lame.

I'd pay for some of the better mods, but the problem is the potential load of crap "mods" that I see no good barrier against.
Also, modders have even less overhead than most indie developers, so lower operating costs. And the vast majority of mods require less specialized skillsets & man hours to develop than a full indie game. Hopefully pricing will reflect this, but I'm not optimistic.
And yes, people definitely won't like being charged for a former freebie. I'd say it opens a can of worms that should have just been left sealed... but unfortunately Gaben can make a profit on the sale of those worms.

it would have been a good thing if it was like a donation system.
it would have encouraged modders to work harder on their projects and get paid reasonably base on the quality of their mods, but now....
i don't like it :D

It states that the creator can choose between a set amount or leave the amount up to the buyer, but still, paying for unsupported amateur mods? no thanks.
-edit- LOL, they're calling prices doubling from $2 all the way up to $100 "pay what you want" and the item i looked at was 1 single outfit for skyrim that was even featured on the announcement page, the game itself cost me less then that.

i take back my words...
i just checked the skyrim's payed mods page and....well i'm disappointed,i thought it's gonna be like a donation system,but it's not :|
i'm definitely not gonna pay money for armor, weapons, etc :| it's like EA's dlcs but created by mod creators xD
i was talking about those huge mods that will change the entire game, add anew quest lines, etc (like stalker misey or skyrim falksaar )

Bad idea: As a long time modder I'm afraid that this step will get modders to pull their content off of pages like Nexus, TWCenter, Gamefront etc in order to become Workshop-exclusive and get paid (which is totally understandable). I'm all about supporting modders (I'm a paying supporter on the Nexus forums) but this step might hurt the modding community and the wide availability of mods.
Also imagine this: an advanced Skyrim gamer plays the game running 150-200 mods at all once (adding, switching, testing mods frequently), if an average mod costs $2 a 150-200 mod-setup would cost $400, Skyrim Legendary Edition costs $39.99. Although rewarding modders for their hard work is understandable, spending 10 times more on mods than the money you gave to the developers is a bit extreme. (and people who like to mod Skyrim as a hobby also play Fallout 3, New Vegas, Oblivion etc with their 200-200 mods). I'm not sure if Valve really thought about the impact of this decision, or they just simply don't care.

This, so much this.
It leaves me wondering what'll happen to the grouped mods like the darthmod for total war or other total overhaul mods that combine multiple mods from multiple creators, i'm kinda expecting it all to fall apart now that they can get money for it.
Not to mention the massive increase of people posting other people's work in the workshop claiming it's theirs.

Ah nice I see Chesko's popular Arissa companion mod, and Isoku's needs mod and wet and cold mods are already up for £5 each. This dead e versions found on the Nexus are non-updated ones, so it seems they release the new versions of the mods exclusively for money on the workshop.
Welp they were some of the most well respected and talented modders in the Nexus community, it seems like Skyrim modding got killed already.

If you did put your mod content on Workshop for sale you may want to hire yourself a good lawyer. It opens you up to the cesspool of copyright infringement and prosecution.
In short, as you are now making profit you better pray to GABEN that NONE of your content violates anyone’s intellectual property otherwise you can legally be sued.
Overall this is a really dumb move by Valve and it is not a question of if someone is taken to court but when. Given how quality control is with Valve lately, this is going to collapse in on itself very fast.

Now lots of ppl obviously gonna sell their mods, which is complete bullshit, I mean if there was a donate button, someone could donate, but buy.....nope. And obviously this leads to piracy.
See kids changing the color of a car skin, changing one texture or whatever and selling it on Steam...

Theres a pay what you want option for modders. Is that close enough?

Cities: Skylines mods can also potentially be malware. So now it could be paid malware.

Oh damn, I don't own that game, but I've seen all the things people have made so far.. It would be really lame if they did that.
I just hope people will stay loyal to sites like Nexus Mods and won't turn over to this bullshit, but I know everyone wants money..
I'm not blaming modders in any way.

Great, even more Mirco-DLC. Only this time its unofficial.
I wonder what would happen if a paid mod stops getting supported and the game updates and breaks the mod. Do you have to deal with it? Or do you get refunded? Knowing Valve its probably the former one.

Now this really depends on the mod, no I wouldn't pay for the mod that makes my skyrim character naked.
But for example a mod that adds a whole new story, with good voicing and characters. (basically a quality mod with lots of content), then sure!
UPDATE: So I went looking at the skyrim mods and people are asking like 5$ for a new follower, and 0,20-1$ for a sword. or a couple of dollar for some remodeling.

It'll take a while for the market to balance itself out. Its only natural that the prices are going to start much too high, and work down from there.
In the end, I think most of the mods will end up very cheap. $1 for major mods, $0.10 for small ones, and they'll make up the difference in volume.

I agree with its a bad idea.
Good mods may end up being pulled from other sites were they are free.
And I'm 10000000000% sure there will be a flood of pointless mods that alter or add just one tiny thing.
I also agree on the grounds it should be 'donate', and NOT 'buy'. Specially if valve is getting the reported 70+%?

I would only pay for a mod if it was a total conversion mod or a massive overhaul. Not going to pay 5,49€ for a few extra spells. I can get AAA games on sale for that price.

I am perfectly fine if they add a donation button, but NOT forcing you to pay for the mod if you want to use it. Before anyone says "just use the nexus" (in the case of the starting game skyrim) they already launched at least one mod that has extra stuff in it only in the paid version (midas magic), This is the end of skyrim modding unless they do something about it.

I kinda want to believe that the good mods are still going to be free even with the option for them to charge for them. I don't think they would've done any to this day if they were after money.
Charging for weapon retextures? You're delusional if you think I'm going to shell a cent for it. Falskaar? That definitely deserves recognition, but it should be a donation, leaving it up to the users if they want to. Paid isn't the spirit of mods.

i like playing the original games anyway,i only maybe add texture improvements so no cheeseburgers from me for mister Gaben

I can picture it now, a site with a ship as a mascot that has lasers modded on to the hull and sails. With a rocket engine on the back and some shields. The cannons will shoot cannonballs with cats strapped to them and when they hit they will cover the enemy deck with catnip set the cats in to a craze. The ships lasers will make dots on the enemies and the crazed cats will attack....

I never seen that and that is pretty much exactly what I pictured

It's already possible
1) buy mod
2) get mod files from a separate folder
3) ask for refund
4) copy the mod files back
5) share to internet for piracy

According to the FAQ they will create measures to prevent abusing the refund system. But maybe one per costumer will not be something they can control. This is sad anyway, modders are not EA, pirating them will be sad but again, I prefer donating directly to them and not giving money to Valve and Bethesda

thats the worst news I could hear this week. Why Gab3n whay ? ;_;

I wonder if people can buy and trade mods as giftable copies, then we can have bundles just for mods and then Steam will implement region locks for mods.

and yet another pointless feature nobody asked for

So now if you are a mod creator you can sell your stuff on Steam Workshop. Of course maybe 30% maybe less or maybe more is a steam and probably game developer share [PEOPLE SAY VALVE'S SHARE IS 75%. WHAT A SHAME]. What do you think about it?
But the biggest problem that this awesome thing the PC community has - a free modding opportunities may disappear at all
