I don't know how to answer. I like best those games which force me to question the very definition of "game", which take me on an emotional and intellectual journey, which defy genres even as they recreate them in their own image. And also I like violence. Blood and gore and guns and swords and hockey sticks, the hammering of artillery on your ear drums and the pitiful screams of your enemies, both of which are slightly arousing.
But also like potato. Wish had two potato. One to eat, one to bribe soldier. Reality harsh mistress. Also, is cold.

Clearly you're here more to debate than actually learn true meaning of the definition. Which there is none good enough for you unless it is your own. The difference between subjective and objective is problem here. If you'll go this way and make your own definitions for words, you'll jump into many misunderstandings in your future.

it is action because it requires reflexes. unless they create turn-based FPS, the FPS is gonna be action based game every time.
But for the answer, I can say Portal is First-person action puzzle game is the closest. There is no actual shooting involved, but you could say it same way that it is FPS puzzle game. the thing Puzzle doesn't exlude the game from other genres. It is feature that every game can have. There are many games that have multiple genres.

And what you are doing is tossing every game that as action elements, in the same category, thats almost all games out there, aside from Rhythm games, so following your train of thought, there are only to genres Action or Adventure, everything else is a subgenre of those 2

look on Store page on Steam and click on Action genre and you'll see :D every FPS is listed there as Action. Btw Portal is there as Action, Adventure. I guess there must be a monumental mistake, unless it is the easier option and there isn't any mistake.

Most people think that if it has experience points, it's an RPG. Hence the armies of "RPG players" who actually never saw an actual cRPG. (Mostly due to the fact it is hard to find one nowadays, maybe 20 titles were released altogether since the beginning of the decade in the non-indie scene.)
(Also, no, Skyrim is as much an RPG as Battlefield multiplayer is. :) Skyrim is a dungeon crawler action game. A damn good one at that though, so if you like mindless hacking and pretty weapon/armour models, play it.)

Ok its cheap ass games, I know, but I had a spare 47p in my Steam wallet and those games came to exactly that when I bought them. I thought i'd spread the Bad Rats love/hate for no apparent reason :)
