Hi guys/gals. :)

Due to some problems, my internet connection is slower than most of you, and unfortunately downloading with steam makes the matters even worse for me. For example, using my laptop I can download 2.5 gigabytes a night if I download with Internet Download Manager, but only about 0.5-1 GBs with steam client (I tried many servers). Also, with IDM I can schedule a download for 2AM (when my free traffic hours start), and steam client lacks this feature too, and I have to stay awake until then. :(

I want to know if there's another way to download a steam game? Say, downloading a steam game backup from somewhere else with IDM, and then restoring it with steam client (Don't know if that's even legal)? or any other strange way to do that? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. :)

Unfortunately, this would not solve any problems for me. Anyone of my friends have this problem like me. Many of them use ISPs which don't even offer free traffic hours! :(

In Iran. Internet is very slow and expensive, and also heavily fil-tered here...

They have robots that give negative points to the sites with special words (Their logic is, if a site contains the word fil-ter in english or persian too many times, maybe the site is educating the fil-ter bypassing methods! So let's close it)! Never choose a dict-at*or country to be born in! :(

I would get a large external hard drive (say 2-3TB+) and just backup all games to that as soon as you have it downloaded.

EDIT: You can also share those backups with your friends/let them backup as you'll need a license on your account for the game you want to restore a backup from.

Yeah, I have every game that I downloaded restored somewhere safely, but the problem is mostly about the not-downloaded games. And sometimes it's hard to find a special game that you like, among the people you know. :)

You could always use the windows scheduler to start the steam client at 2am and then to switch it off when needed.

Good idea, but windows scheduler doesn't work perfect all the time. Also, the problem with slow downloads bothers me more. :(

I too have slow download speeds and need some advice...

He is offering me to use other versions of games (like physical DVDs - etc.), and copy some of its content to steam folder, so that the content which steam has to download decreases. It's a method that some of my friends use, and most of the times it works (but I personally don't like the idea).

Move to a better planet <--- how about that? jk :)

Anyway, GodEmperorofMan I can imagine how annoying might be your downloading issue :(
As others mentioned, backing up your games seems like the only legit solution.
Also, you do not have to stay awake!
1) Set your PC's Bios to turn on at that time!
2) Steam Settings->Interface->"Run Steam when my computer starts"

That doesn't solve your problem but at least it's something for a start.

It doesn't work for me dear Amir, because due to some problems I can only use 2-3 ISPs at the moment, and this one is supposed to be the best of them!
By the way, who's Mahmoud? I'm Seyyed Ali! Want some proof?

I thought I had it bad. I can only use my neighbors wifi after I put my laptop on top of a phone book on top of a cabinet near the window. I don't have any real limits except when my neighbors decide to go on netflix.

use torrents, download a game cd/dvd image.

Torrent has unstable download speeds too (much slower than IDM), and is not reliable. I rarely even use torrent clients...

Permalink

Which is strange, because for me torrents provide at least 120% of normal download speed AND allow pausing and resuming at any time. Just use the torrents with 1k+ seeds.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In fact the most important stat is not the number of seeders but the Seeders/Leechers ratio. The bigger the better.

That's the problem with torrent, its speed depends on many factors (like this "Seeders/Leechers" ratio you mentioned), and most of the times is slower than steam. Also, it doesn't give you steam backups, and sometime other versions don't work. :(

I myself am a bit surprised Steam itself isn't fil-tered in Iran, but I don't know much about these things.

Here's hoping for a national fiber network coming soon to a Tehran near you :)

Yeah, we're all surprised too! lol
They have fil-tered steam shop, but we open it using an anti-fil-ter tool. Let's hope at least the client will stay operational...
