I heard it was a bad fanfiction that had to remove all references to the original work, which was considered bad enough. How could anyone want to see it? It would be like watching a My Immortal movie.

Apparently the film is a lot better than the book, but still not great.
I think the thing is, the sex is neither here nor there. It's tame BDSM, and hey, if it's two consenting adults, they can do what they like. The problem is the abusive relationship that's portrayed as a romantic fairytale (note that I'm not talking about the sex when I say abusive).

Someone should do an edit of the film that emphasises the negative aspects of the relationship and makes the whole thing really dark. I wonder how that would go down...

To me it seems like the Twilight-effect all over again. A movie pops up that the girls (women?) want to see and they drag their partner with them. Just clench your teeth and suffer through that 2 hours, worst case you take a nap, I don't get all the fuss about this whole shebang.

While I was tricked into seeing Twilight under somewhat similar conditions to the ones you mentioned, I actually enjoyed one thing about that movie: The environments. Actually, it was a rather nice looking movie all-round. Boring as heck, at least to me (I'm really not part of the target audience), but pretty. Considering what 50 shades is about, I doubt it will have the same pros, so if I was tricked/forced into watching it (currently no risk of that happening ;) ), I guess naptime would be my way of handling it.

Thankfully my wife is sparing me. Although I did enjoy Twilight (which was my idea we'll watch anyway). But hey, even if she did take me, that would be just part of the debt to pay for taking her to see Borat.

Oddly enough, because the book is such an exceptionally poorly written turd, some people think the awful movie actually improves on the writing by subtraction. But its a bit like trying to clean up vomit on the carpet using a snowshovel.

Since it's Valentine's Day, I went to the movies with my girlfriend.
We saw a movie about fucked-up people, unhealthy relationships, non-consensual violence and other fucked-up stuff.
Relatas salvajes (Wild Stories), a Spanish-Argentinian comedy. It's dark, it's funny, and really interestingly violent.
