The person hosting it thought the admins at Steam Gifts would send the gift, so he did not actually have the gift. Really bums me out because the giveaway was for Borderlands 2. :/

You can report him if he didn't had a gift or a cd key.

I can't seem to find anything funny about this :S Is it the "stupidity" of the assumption that the site provides free keys? Or is it some sort of epicaricacy?

Borderlands 2? Ouch.

The most annoying part about winning a gift from a welcher is that you have to stare at the green winner bar for a full week before you can click not received and make it go away.

+1, happened to me recently. Worse yet, the guy made no attempt whatsoever to contact me about this. I added him, and was immediately blocked. Based on their SG profile, they probably have no idea how the site worked, and assumed that they could give away games from their library.

why don't they just ban those people for life? I mean, c'mon how hard can it be to read the rules before registering?

Other way of looking at it could be like this that when this person applies for a huge donation to the society, everybody cheering at the person, saying thanks, huge press conferences, worldwide news and at the end when the donation has to be made, this asshole thinks that he should be getting the money he 'supposedly applied to donate'.
Try to look at this perspective.

Or to use common sense and think... "Hmm... there's no way this one website can be giving away 942034820409843 copies of Mafia II as well as about 2000 other games." I'm not generally an elitist, but certain parts of the internet/life definitely require an IQ and/or logical thinking certificate to gain access.

I am always checking further when I see such giveaways and I know how to spot them, but wouldn't it be easier for all of us if this could be made a one-chance option (banhammer)?

This, even without reading rules i don't know how difficult can be to understand how it works here.

Oh that guy, with 3 fake giveaways at the same time? Yeah one of them was Borderlands 2. With big games it's always a good idea to check if the giveaway is fake or not, most of the times it's quite easy to tell and you won't waste any points with it. Though calling out is a bad idea and will get you suspended, so don't do that. ^_^

Yeah, it's depressing for the first win. It might takes a while for your next win, so keep on trying and good luck.

I'm new to the website, so I might have not quite grasped it properly, but what possible benefit can making fake giveaways have? Is it just a case of people not reading how it works and thinking they can get one over on the system?

3 reasons I can think of are: 1) to generate more points to enter giveaways with (not CV), 2) a misunderstanding of how giveaways work (some people might think they will be getting the game instead of giving it for example), or 3) trolling.

With regards to (1):

You don't get any points when you create a giveaway.

"Every time anyone submits a game, every member of the site, excluding the giveaway creator, receives 5 percent of that gifts value (in USD) in points." -FAQ

Yeah I'm aware of that, but it won't stop someone who is using multiple accounts with proxies or that has a friend do it for them.

Did this change recently? I was sure I remembered it being that every time a GA is made, everyone including the creator, received 1 point...

It's not uncommon with 0 CV giveaways. Overexcited noobs tend to create 3 GAs at the same time and often pick some popular "AAA" titles.
Just pay attention whenever you come across such a giveaway and report if necessary.

SO again, why don't we have this written with big red letters on the top of the create giveaway page:
"You HAVE TO give this game to a random person, you will not get this game!" :D :D

I was thinking for about 5 mins about this, and came up with only one reason, and it's very stupid. :D Sadly. :D

Feel ya bro, the last giveaway I won was for burnout paradise, but the guy was giving out origin keys not steam, and the admins deleted it. (For record I wouldve been ok with the origin key, especially when the option was no game lol.)

Nah, it would actually have caused you problems in the future. If you had won a GA of mine afterwards, I would have asked for a reroll, because of not activating previous wins (I nearly always check for that).

My friend did the exact same thing. For some reason he thought that the site provided you with a couple free copies of games to give away to people to see how things work. He then tried to send the gifts to the winners by clicking on the Send Gift link. It was when the winner kept telling him that he wasn't getting the game that he looked into it and realized that wasn't the case. He however manned up and bought copies of the games for them and all was well. Sorry you got scammed, keep at it!
