I think it's cause it was overhyped, like most games these days. Personally I like the game, it's not revolutionary and I hate how my high end pc can't run it on max cause of the optimalization issues. But it's a nice game I would give it 8/10

its just as with Rome 2. It was release buggy and unplayable, but critic reviews had like 90% while user reviews score were at 30-40. And users were right!

I do not recognize Metacritic as a legitimate website for game reviews. In fact, I don't recognize a lot of gaming websites as legitimate reviewers. Just as well, decimal ratings and 1(0)-100 ratings are the worst kinds of ratings and they don't deserve a place in a review of anything. When you have such a large amount of numbers to rate something, what's the difference between a 95 and a 96? And decimal ratings; What's the difference between 7.9 and 8? Not a damn thing, it's just foolishness.

Actually, 1-100 on metacritic is justified, as it is an average.

But you're right about generic reviews, without explaining WHY they give 76 and not 75 or 77 they only prove their score is dumb.

See, I do not get these arguments. A number score is a subjective way to give an impression about a game, just as much as "well, I thought it was pretty good, not fantastic, just pretty good". Why do people think that numbers have to be EXACT in what they are trying to measure? Here: numbers can be subjective, just as much as ANY other piece of language!

Number scores are just another way to give an impression about a game. I totally agree that a 7.9 and a 8.0 are not that different... and that is exactly why it is a good idea to give scores like that. In this way, games that are somewhat similar are given similar scores!

The other option is to have scores like 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10. But then you get games that you like more or less equally (like, a 6.9 and a 7.1) and you end up giving 6 to one and 8 to the other because the scale you are forced into does not give you that kind of nuance! It is bizarre! Use all numbers, it is ok, just know when you are reading them that yes, there is no big difference between 6.9 and 7.1, and they could be given like that just because I was in a good or bad day or something. The little seemingly meaningless digits are a fantastic buffer to avoid bigger injustices.

The numbers might individually be subjective but when a ton of reviews are averaged you get a number that is less subjective.

That's why Valve will never make the stupid mistake of releasing HL3. There's no way anyone can make a game that would live up to the expectations and hype of that game

Agreed with others, Metacritic in the past has proven to be easily gotten into by anyone to just flood a game with good or bad reviews. Try gamerankings as it just gathers all the game journalism sites with it's ratings to see how something is.

http://www.gamerankings.com/ps4/704529-watch-dogs/index.html

Then again by now you shouldn't get over hyped for a game as they will rarely meet whatever expectations you might have.

or because Ubisoft "forgot" to optimize the game for PC and AMD video cards

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I dunno, it sounded like it wasnt that well optimized for Nvidia cards either from what I have heard, I just think ubisoft forgot to hire people that know how to program for pc, especially considering the horrid track record they have for that sort of thing,

I.E. Might and Magic Heroes VI which is still pretty much broken for nvidia users more than a year after its release (black screeens when entering combats frequently, desyncing multiplayer, loaded multiplayer games don't even work and immediately desync.) for a while the blackscreen problem was so bad (5 months) that it was literally unplayable because as soon as you entered a town the game would crash. And that was a PC exclusive...

You base your argument on what you've heard.. it's just like what the votes on Metacritic are worth.

I run the game on a 2 year-old 560ti and I've had no big or even small issues whatsoever.

For me the only serious bad side has been the release on Uplay.

not really, I base my comment on previous experience with ubisoft PC games... which have been really awful. I took word of mouth into consideration, but I stand by my statement even if your 560ti works well. Ubisoft doesn't hire people that know how to program well for pc.

That score is understandable. While performance wise it's fine for my system, the forced mouse acceleration has made it unplayable for me. We need a patch soon and I'm glad to know they are in the process of making one (I just wish they could have had it ready by release...).

People complain about how hyped this game is, yet they are totally part of it. Complain about how bad the game (in your opinion) is and it will only make more people try the game.
You will always have over the top good and bad reviews. In the end you will always have to test it yourself. You can read all the reviews if you have the time, or just go ahead and read a handful of good, bad and middle reviews to give you a short summary. But in the end you will have to play it yourself. Like it? Go ahead and buy it. Don't like it? Uninstall. Move on.

Metacritic sucks and should die. The sooner the better. It helps people to make wrong assumptions, gets people fired from their jobs and lowers their wage. You can give your + or -, but you can not balance those for arbitrary score.
As proven again and again, do not trust review sites, plenty of them are bought. Users are somehow better but you have to watch out for overly positive or negative opinions, why usually show what the users want to believe rather than what he really does feel.

I'd say about 75% of the negative reviews are just people who are mad that it is badly optimized and forget that the game itself isn't bad, it's quite fun actually. And with the patch coming soon, I guess the ratings will go up a bit.

I read some reviews (from the press: Gamespot, Eurogamer, PC Gamer UK), and they seem to reflect a high score, like 81 or so. The number scores seem to be quite coherent with the written complete reviews, at least for these sites.

Now, if you or I or anybody agrees with them, that is another story. :)

People get so butt hurt over the stupidest shit. Reviews don't mean shit. Play the game yourself and then decide. I haven't played it yet but two friends at work have been playing it and they said they have had a lot of fun with it. I'll buy it later when it's on sale.

I'm also tired of hearing the "Elite PC Race" crap. Get over yourself. Games are meant to be played to have fun not for fighting each other over who's machine is better. I use to be all console before I realized how much cheaper you could get games on PC. Yes they do look better but who really gives a shit. If it's fun then enjoy it and quit crying. I also still play games on console because there are some awesome exclusives that will never come to PC.

I agree with the "live and let live" concept, Daze. Just enjoy the game, no matter what platform you're using to play it. However, the "PC Master Race" joke is a bit more than a joke these days - it's been stated a lot of times before that the trend to create multiplatform games has seriously hurt the development of gaming technology in general. Games are being made to run on consoles' obsolete hardware and thus are ported from consoles to PC 'as is' to save costs; so the consoles 'generations' are affecting PC gaming in a negative way.

I know what your saying there Sleepy. They really should build PC first since it's not restrained and then port to console. I'm just so tired of hearing it. Really makes people sound like assholes. Just like hearing the my console is better than yours. So much heat between the playstation and xbox

Not actually easy to develop on "abundant" resources and then start cutting it down to make it run on less, but I would prefer proper optimization (all ports, think of Dark Souls...) and then some fancy like the DX hooks (SweetFX) do, not too hard, or higher res textures cause I'm sure they made them higher res in creation anyway.

Right now, PC is made second class out of laziness and overcalculation. Hm, maybe that just leaves me a lot more time to do stuff that's not so much wasted time...

Understand where you're coming from, but it's a real shame that multi-platform games are so rarely designed to take advantage of each of the different platforms' strengths. While a "one size fits all" port is probably a source of great excitement in the accounting department, nobody else really wins...

That's what happens to overhyped games that fail to deliver. I mean, if it was just a random game that popped out of nowhere, it would be quite a good game. But the exaggerated hype, the massive amount of $ involved, coupled with continuous delays (to "make it better"), for an average, non-polished, quite buggy game made people go berserk.

Most of its defects would be easily forgivable if it was released by a small indie-ish studio and priced accordingly. But you expect much more from a $70 would-be AAA title.
