Free to play is really the only future for MMOs, in my opinion. Others might still survive, but the free to plays are where all the curious customers will stay; having a subscription will deter the casually interested, for example, me. I loved Morrowind. Oblivion was okay. I haven't bothered with Skyrim, because it looks like Oblivion with more mountains, and I'll pick it up when it's less or when the DLC included edition isn't an arm and a leg. An MMO of the Elder Scrolls, by a team that basically dissed all of the unique lore and intrigue that made Morrowind so interesting? I'm not throwing down cash to try that, and I'm not bothering with a 14 day trial or whatever with that attitude towards the series. Of course, you could always just consider the fact that they said screw you to the entire universe because "No one would believe that silly story".
Edit: Also, $15 is way more than pretty much any other game asks for, so you'd have to reallllly want to play to pay that much. There are probably people who loved Skyrim who will dive right in, but they'll probably be disappointed and unsub quickly.

Free to play might be the future (Thanks to pay to win strategy which makes the companies rich). I would like to see more 'Buy to play' games though.. You know.. the games where you just buy and no subscriptions after that (and hopefully no cash shop).. But I guess these games won't be getting any revenue if there areno more new people joining the game.

Oh, I agree with you on that front; just because free to play is the future doesn't mean it's the best. For example, I love DDO (yeah, I know, I'm that guy) but I can tell it's terribly pay to win. I still enjoy it, but I resent the cash shop, which is OP balance patch please (you can literally buy your way through the game. I haven't done the math, but you could probably TR a character for $200 cash shop and have a perma-buffed character without any work). However, there are practically no games that use the pay once model, which is a shame. One of my favorite MMOs was the original Guild Wars, but my friends all left me. Mesmer was a unique and creative class. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, GW2 made them kinda generic again. I could still go back to Guild Wars though, but I would never bother going back to a subscription game. Ditto Global Agenda, a game which was great at one point in time, but died when it went F2P and coincidentally P2W.

I have enjoyed many 'pay to win' games myself (I have never paid though :P). There will always be people who are not going to touch the cash shop.. few of the games don't give crap about the non-payers :/
I am not able to find a(n?) MMORPG where I could stay after Ragnarok Online.. There are so many games.. but nothing manages to make stay.. Oh well.. maybe some day.. or maybe I am getting too old and no longer like the games of this generation.. (makes me sound older than I actually am XD)

I don't see the problem with the GW2 Mesmer tbh, i've played mesmer quite a bit and the only change i see is being able to pack more of a punch than the old mesmer. Tried DDO but i could just not get into it even tho i'm a huge D&D fan. Also tried Global Agenda but it was boring.

From my short(i never really liked mesmers in GW1 either, but i did give it a fair try both in PvE and PvP) time with the class it's mostly about mobility and trolling players/mobs with illusion/debuffs and less about dps. Just give the game a try, it's much cheaper now and even if you end up not liking the new mesmer you should still have more than enough fun to justify the purchase.

I would pay extra for a DLC that adds a new big region with new loot and new monsters... stuff that they add throughout the game's life so that they DO get paid for their new content... those are the real DLCs!
But most companies now do the stupid kind of DLCs... a single weapon, a skin, an ability or whatever stupid tiny stuff that's already in the game, that's not "downloadable content", it's unlockable content, pay2unlock :/

I don't think so. I'm willing to buy in subscription model games as long as It is good and I'm interested with. TES subscription model is just too damn high, 60$ buy in and 15$ additional per month? Hell no.
It's fun to play when there's no noobs or griefers in subscription models.

I agree, to an extent. Subscription models, however, deter a lot of people like me (I wouldn't call myself a noob or griefer, even though I'm not the best at most MMOs), and have to compete with solid F2P games like, well, pick your poison. Are some subscription MMOs really successful? WoW. Can they continue to be feasible three, four, five years down the road? Probably not.

I gotta say they are successful. The subscription games that I play only lose players fast after 3 months or so when they've already exhausted all the possible updates that they can't think off. WoW is an example, they are already exhausting most of the updates that they can think off.

I prefer subscription fees as long as the updates are worth it. For example GW2, the updates/events sucked imo..their staff was too small.
I did play the ESO beta although I only got to a few levels as I hate wasting time in betas, I just wanted to get a feel of it. Hope they change some things but it is a beta so I cant judge too harshly.

Especially when you look at Guild Wars 2. One of price of £30 for the game and they still constantly update it and add new free features.

Well at the moment, it's only really got The Elder Scrolls brand, lore and expectations associated with a game of that series to hold it up.
Yet look how SWTOR did...grew astronomically initially, then crashed and burned.

Same. It didn't live up to the hype at all. ;~; was pretty boring. & the quests felt generic.

All I had to do for the attack was hold M1 or click it once :x... and I tested on November 22nd so not long ago

I haven't played the beta but apparently many people were disappointed with the gameplay.
As much as I love the Elder Scrolls series the monthly subscription fee is just too much in my opinion, it's the same reason I never bought World of Warcraft. However, as someone suggested in a previous thread, I could just wait it out and see if TESO will follow The Old Republic and go free-to-play in a year or so.

I was very excited when I just heard about TESO, but I didn't let myself get attached too much, because Bethesda Softworks still didn't make the choice if the game will be pay to play (60$ + 15$ a month), or buy to play (60$). (they said from beginning that it will NOT be free to play on launch.)
As a very big publishing company who really has enough money for everything and not to fear for bankrupt, I am very disappointed with their choice. And I can already see that the game goes f2p within first year. There is NO CHANCE that it lives long enough to reach it's 2nd year. NO CHANCE IN HELL. Because no matter how much I love TES series (my favorite games actually :) ) I already know that the game will not be nearly as good as WoW or EvE online, the two major pay to play games.
That's just my opinion :D

What I seen.. I mean.. some of it was kind of cool.. but I will probably end up playing either EQ-next or Wildstar instead.

Just my thoughts. Also, you need monthly fee if you want to bring quality content to the people every x weeks/months. WoW had/has a sub fee and they shipped new raids and content every few months (if it was enought or not, well let's just not get into it). Either that or pay-to-win. Or the third option, buy-to-pay like GW2 but let's face it, that game gives you the same event in a different robe every 2 weeks.
Tough, but seems like if you want quality content, you have to pay the price (which is 15 bucks a month).

Yea that is true.. it is part of the reason why I was playing EQ ( the first one ) for as long as I did. Though now I would suggest against playing it unless they open up a new progression server.. ( Just do not like what its turned into )

I think the problem is that people got way too excited over this game and too much hype built up. Even if it does turn out to be a good game there's no way it can live up to those expectations. Honestly, this game should have never existed, they should have just made a new TES game with multiplayer but Bethesda got greedy and wanted a slice of the MMO pie, just like Bioware did.
I literally facepalm when i see some of the things the gaming media is praising when it comes to TESO, i think a few days ago there was an article(i think on kotaku but i'm not sure) with a title like "In TESO you can be anything you want!". No shit sherlock i could do that in every TES game since Arena.
Imho it's also lacking some of the things requied to make it a proper TES MMO, like going crazy and killing everyone in sight or open world PvP. To be true to the series the game should have had always on PvP and full loot on death. The freedom it keeps bragging about is a lie.
I won't be buying it and i honestly think it will go free2play before it hits it's 1st anniversary. I'm actually curious when it does go f2p how greedy their business model will turn out to be.

Even if it's TES, MMORPG is still MMORPG, and I doubt they'll be on the innovative side like Guild Wars 2.

lulz :D aion was p2p when it was still populated, it was pretty good for pvp, pvp players now play darkfall, stupid people still play world of warcraft, nevertheless the best mmo's are subscription based and without item shops or anything like that, i payed subscription for more than 10 years now , ultima online, star wars galaxys, those games used to be the very best and i never regret paying a few $ for a full month of fun

The game was pretty fun in the beta. The problem is that P2P models are dying. WoW subs are slowly stopping their monthly sub. It's only a matter of time before the game dies completely.

lol monthly subscriptions.
Never have, never will.

Making an online Elder Scrolls game was just a HORRIBLE mistake. This series is MEANT to be played offline, single-player only (full of awesome, entertaining quests, plot twists [kind of] etc.). Turning it into MMO is just wrong and Bethesda will find that out pretty soon I believe.
On the other hand, mothly fees ARE GREAT AND I SUPPORT THEM. Yep, I ain't trolling. Subscription means there will be less kids playing this game, so the immerse should be higher. I mean, there is nothing worse than playing free online game with kids under 15 (or even 20) y.o. with those high-pitched voices and childish behaviour. It's a total immersion-breaker.

The New Trailer is out receiving quite a bit of backlash.
Has the hype behind TES Online died out? Is the $15 MONTHLY Subscription Fee the reason for this?
Will YOU be subscribing to this game ?
P.s. June 2014 for XBONE and PS4
