Samurai Champloo, that is it.

Interesting, educational at times, only one filler episode and amazing soundtrack by Nujabes.

It's pretty down to Earth, nothing crazy like magic or devil fruits. Just a wild guy, a rōnin, and a female companion. And maybe a sugar glider?

I was just coming here to suggest this. 2nd favorite anime, pretty short but well worth the watch.

This was also the first anime I thought of after seeing the topic. I would definitely recommend Samurai Champloo to anyone looking for something "different."

Others you might try include Fairy Tale (fantasy, comedy, action), Welcome to the NHK (a treatment on NEET's and human psychology), and Baka no Test (comedy, romance, slice of life). They all manage to "stand apart from the pack" while still being entertaining.

As for Stein's Gate, Cowboy Bebop, and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood,, everyone else in this thread has already recommended them.

Fullmetal Alchemist is definitely my favorite overall, but there's something about Champloo that makes me want everyone to see it.

Very nice bundle! Already redeemed :(
As for anime. I haven't seen a lot, so I can't recommend you anything similar to the named ones.
If you want to like anime, watch Spirited Away (or some other Miyazaki works of art) :)

EDIT: Hm, from the similar (cyberpank) to Psycho Pass and Ergo Proxy I can recommend Ghost in the Shell.

EDIT2: All of the above aren't series :)

You can never go wrong with Cowboy Bebop, but that is really well known, so you might already have seen it.
Personally I really like One Piece, because it's fun and silly and it makes me happy. Doesn't really match your request , though.

You might like Texhnolyze but it is like the furthest thing from a typical anime series and probably most similar to Ergo Proxy on your list. It is rather grim, but I forget most of it.

edit: well, it's not recent, but if you don't care about that..

If it was the grim atmosphere that drew you in to the titles you mentioned above you can always give a spin to a couple oldies like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy bebop(which btw was recommended to me as a series that has a very good dub), Infinite Ryvius, Bokurano, Serial Experiment Lain, Texhnolyze etc. Certainly not very cheerful series.

GiTS that was mentioned above is also a solid choice. And of course there's always Monster. In recent titles I can't say there's anythign good enough to compare with these.

Oh and in a more relaxed(but still depressing) mood you can try Mushishi or Aoi Bungaku.

You're very welcome :)
Just keep in mind that most of these are late 90s- early 00s so they all follow different aesthetics and pace so there's always the chance they don't suit you as much. Try a couple and if you see they're not your cup of tea there's many more to try. I bet there'll always be people around to recommend some good ones

I second pretty much everything KonOkami said. Bebop is awesome, Evangelion is great (and it deals a lot with psychological issues, so get ready for that). Only seen a few episodes of Bokurano and it's just okay in my opinion. Always wanted to watch Lain. Monster is awesome (I've only read the manga, so I don't know if the anime is good.)

You're right, forgot to mention about Bokurano that the anime is quite inferior to the manga since the director decided to change it midway cause he just didn't like how grim it was and how it almost psychologically abuses the reader xD that's GONZO for you...
But still awesome opening

Oh, Uninstall is one of my favorite opening songs of all time, to be honest.

To be honest, I like Bokurano's premise, but for some reason I didn't like its characters (Which is pretty much what's happening to me with Sword Art Online :P)

Code Geass, Zankyou no Terror, both are slightly similar to Death Note.
If you're looking for laughs and story you could try Hamatora,
You could also try Hunter X Hunter, whichi imo is better than Naruto.
Steins;Gate is also quite good.

I think you would like "Code Geass" and "Steins; Gate".

Victory Gundam if you want some tragedy and giant robots. Only seen the first episode, but most fans say it is one of the most tragic anime shows ever.

First few episodes are really, truly boring. I know so many people that stopped watching after first or second episode and it makes me sad. But do not worry, only first 3 or 4 episodes are like that, they'll explain those episodes later on. Trust me and start watching it, it't truly "the" masterpiece and the greatest anime of all times. And I watched a shitload of animes, nothing gave me the pleasure that Steins; Gate did.

I actually loved the first four episodes. I think I actually had a good reason for dropping it, but I can't remember what it was.

imo most of the anime recommended so far has been pretty generic and moreover with a target audience of children.

If you though Ergo Proxy was too weird, you probably won't enjoy these two, but I have to include them nevertheless:
Serial Experiments Lain
Texhnolyze
More down-to-earth, but still won't insult your intelligence:
Baccano!
Ghost in the Shell
Black Lagoon
Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku
Akira
On second thought, most of those are pretty weird too...
