Just watch those 3 in this order and thank me later.
Now One Piece might be odd, you'll think you won't like it since it has so many episodes and a shitty outdated starting but IT IS the greatest ongoing series of all time.It has everything, action, dram, romance, friendship and so on. It's kinda hard to start since it's really outdated and looks really bad at the start and it might seem childish but it is really, truly a beautiful anime.
Other 2 are masterpieces, stop watching anything else and start with those two first. Then get on to OP when you have time.

Tengen Toppa Gurran Lagann its short like 25 episodes or so but damn its good, sound track is so freaking awsum(subs or english dub are done well) story is brilliant and damn i wish there was more of it.
The first few episode seam slow but once it gets going you can't stop watching, once the pace picks up it is flat out.
"Just who the hell do you think I am"
"Believe in the me who believes in you"
Just some of the more memorable lines I watched these after Code gease, Ergo prox, elfen lied, FMA, and a few others and frankly this was better then the lot of them it was really refreshing to watch.
Bakuman is also a great anime you'd think with the subject matter of aspiring manga artists it might be boring but it's not and is one of the best animes i've seen.
If you want them feels always go for Clannad, Angel Beats, Toradora, AIr something along those lines but damn them feels i don't want to ever feel them feels again lol.

Animes with similar theme I haven't seen suggested in previous comments are Danganronpa: kibou no gakuen the animation,Blood+/Blood C (in a sense, they tell the same core story through different style - they're both based on the same movie, and there's not definite better - it's up to personal preference). With a bit older graphics, there's also Umineko no naku koro ni and Higurashi no naku koro ni.
A side word - If you're interested in the plot of the anime much more than the graphics/glorified action scenes/fanservice/etc, I recommend looking up visual novels - a lot of animes were originally from a visual novel(In this case,Danganronpa, higurashi and umineko are) and their original form is how they were "intended to be",where's in the anime the story is often taking shortcuts or changing a bit in a way that doesn't only make sense to make the whole thing "look better",fit more content into an episode, save on production costs, etc.
If this sounds interesting, feel free to look it up yourself or send me a friend request and I'll see if I can help you get them running(higurashi and umineko have versions for pc/ps3 and danganronpa was released for psp but was successfully emulated on pc,iirc).

I was amazed that Death Note avoided the screaming over-acting face-morphing as much as it did (only one scene comes to mind where they actually pulled that). And I stopped watching Naruto after about the first season (which I liked) i nthe middle of the first set of filler episodes (which I hated, and they lasted forever) -- in spite of friends always saying "no, it got good again", I've never gone back to it.
If that sounds like you, please ignore the one recommendation for "Monster" -- I wish I hadn't started that one... watched it to the end and it's the type where it feels like it's building to something amazing, especially with the high quality, but it was basically just a uselessly-oppressive headache in the end.
+2 to Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.
+1 to Black Lagoon
And not really anime, but if you missed Batman Beyond back in the day, maybe add that as well. Another American one, Spawn isn't too bad either, but gets pretty directionless near the end.
And I haven't heard of Psycho Pass (haven't watched any new anime in years) -- thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Give Redline a shot. It's not quite like the things you've mentioned, but it's a pretty good "I don't like anime" anime. It's a movie, so unlike a TV show it's a lot easier to get through the whole thing (1.5 hours instead of ~5 for a season). It's even officially available on YouTube, though personally I'd recommend BluRay just because YouTube murders the bitrate and the visual style really deserves every last bit of quality it can get.
