Status of JMA Tsunami Observation Sites in Noto Region

Summary

　Aerial photographs taken after the earthquake confirmed that the seafloor was exposed, and it was found that observation was not possible.
　We are working to resume observations as soon as possible, including the selection of an alternative observation site in the vicinity.
Main text

　Due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake of 2024, observation data at the JMA tsunami observation site "Suzu Chyocho Bridge" has been missing since 16:10, January 1, 2024. Aerial photographs taken by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) after the earthquake showed that the seabed in the area around the observation point was exposed, probably due to ground uplift, and that it was unobservable.
　The JMA is working to resume observations as soon as possible, including the selection of an alternative observation site in the vicinity.
　In the event of a large-scale earthquake with a tsunami threat, the JMA will promptly estimate the epicenter and scale of the earthquake based on data from seismographs located nationwide, and will issue the first tsunami warning within about 3 minutes of the earthquake occurrence.

Outline

　Active seismic activity has been continuing mainly in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture.
　In the areas hit hard by the magnitude (M) 7.6 earthquake that occurred on January 1, there is an increased risk of collapsed houses and landslides, so please pay close attention to seismic activity, rainfall, and snowfall in the future.
　Please continue to watch out for earthquakes with a maximum intensity of 7 for about a week after the quake.

0Disaster Prevention Notes
　Active seismic activity continues mainly in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture.
　In areas hit hard by the M7.6 earthquake on January 1, there is an increased risk of collapsed houses and landslides. Please be mindful of your own safety by avoiding dangerous places unless there are unavoidable circumstances.

Outlook for future seismic activity
　In the past, 10-20% of major earthquakes were followed by earthquakes of the same magnitude. Therefore, in areas that were hit hard by the M7.6 earthquake on January 1, be on the lookout for earthquakes with a maximum intensity of around 7 for about a week after the earthquake. Seismic activity in this area has been continuing for more than three years and is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, so please continue to exercise caution. Since January 1, the area of seismic activity has been expanding, and stronger tremors have been observed in a wider area than before.
　If a large earthquake occurs on the seafloor, beware of tsunamis.

Status of seismic activity (as of 13:00 on January 5)
　Since 16:00 on January 1, earthquakes of intensity 1 or higher have been observed 819 times (intensity 7: 1, intensity 5 strong: 6, intensity 5 weak: 6, intensity 4: 30, intensity 3: 102, intensity 2: 226, intensity 1: 448).

🙄The observation sites in the area where the tsunami is said to have reached within one minute of the earthquake seem to have been rendered unmeasurable due to the topography uplifted by the earthquake.
In addition, 800 earthquakes have been felt by humans since New Year's Day.

Lacquerware scattered around, damage exceeding 100 million yen
The tip of the damage iceberg.
Generally speaking, it takes about 10 months to produce such lacquerware, and it is difficult to restore painted pieces, even if they are plain. (Also, since some people consider them to have no commercial value, there is a high possibility that they will be discarded rather than restored.)

Since more than 80% of the artisans and inheritors of traditional skills who make these products have also been affected, it is not yet clear when these issues will be addressed.

In about three hours, there were more than a dozen earthquake early warnings and more than 20 actual readings of M4.5 or greater.
The earthquakes are many, but a little bit terrible.
Little by little, buildings and cemeteries have been damaged by the earthquakes as well.
Even earthquake-resistant structures must have their limits. :(
