It's been a while since I last went to the cinema, but I haven't been interested in recent films. This film seems interesting but it has similar ratings as Pacific Rim, which my brother claims was ridiculous. Anybody that has seen it can say if it's any good? Worth going to the cinema? I somehow can't see Matt Damon as Rufus.

Edit: you guys convinced me to give Pacific Rim a chance, but we would have had to wait an hour and a half, so we saw Elysium. It was very enjoyable, but not the best film as some people already said.

"Pacific Rim, which my brother claims was ridiculous."

Your brother has no taste and must be exiled from your family home.

Not terrible, but with lots of nonsense like taking a boat to hit a monster untill it is completely destroyed, only to take out a sword that cuts it without a problem two seconds later.

He's a little hipsterish with movies, when I ask him how a movie was he normally responds with a "I gave it a 6 on Filmaffinity", but normally I agree with him on movies.

BTW he studies in another city and does his best to avoid coming home, so you could consider he's exiled.

That's simple. Ship = blunt force trauma. Sword = fucking disembowelment chance on a critical hit. I know which is the more useful.

I'll admit, that was the one thing I didn't get. Nukes don't stop the Kaiju, but a big robot wailing on the fuck takes it out in moments.

To be fair, I went to see Pacific Rim and regretted I didn't go to see Elysium, which (Judging by the trailer) seemed more interesting, if silly.
I found Pacific Rim to be rather dull overall

not exactly. its just film about big robots fight big monsters. Just good-looking fight, especially in IMAX.

It's very entertaining, but with it's flaws. I love anything sci-fi and this definitely scratches the itch. Looming problems with the film are story structure and a few belief-suspending loopholes. Totally worth the watch, just note the poingancy in Earth's population consisting entirely of Latin peoples + Matt Damon. >_<

I went and saw Elysium with some co-workers and, man, was the movie hilarious if you don't take it seriously. Otherwise, there are plenty of plot holes and inconsistencies. Definitely an amusing movie for entertainment, but definitely won't be winning any awards for its story line or acting.

Elysium is pretty and had good CGI. Jodie Foster's acting is awesome and she does a great job in making you hate the character. Sharlto Copley (the guy from District 9) manages to create an even more unpleasant character. I thought the movie is worth the price of admission. It's something different and it really makes you root for the good guys.

Funny, from the trailer I thought the 'good guys' were a bunch of jerks who decide to ruin shit for everyone so that not even people on the station are allowed to be happy :D

You have a point on that. Personally I think they were a bit but hey, not only the rich can have the perfect life xD

at least that's what they thought

Yeah, that's what the trailer's showing. "If we can't be happy, fuck you, I'll blow all your shit up." Which is... mature.

Just got back from the cinema, the plot isn't like that at all. I liked the film, not the best movie ever, but very enjoyable.

BTW, I arrived with the intention of watching Pacific Rim, but we had to wait 1:30 hours for that, so we went for Elysium.

Watching Pacific Rim was pretty painful. The Jager looked and moved like something from Big-O too and it just felt like a bit of a rip-off.
