All I can think of is that having your own key makes you feel special, warm and fuzzy, and like you're missing out on something if you don't redeem it. A free-for-all beta, not so much. I'm guessing they get much more people through the gates, and participating, by handing out serial keys than simply opening it up to everyone.

Most people aren't going to realise that their key is exactly the same as everyone else's :)
