Well i just got scammed for around $100 worth of games

He offered me Gift Master Card worth $100 for the games, which were enough with the sales of these games. I asked him how he added me because he has low amount of games to get a sg account. He told me that a friend told him about me selling games, he also made a huge story that he got this gift card for this birthday and his parents has setup a parental lock so he cant use the card on other websites, he gave me code for prepaid master card and i check every thing was working fine , the card indeed had balance of $100, so i sent him games.

I was really tired and it was late night then so i didn't used the card, but i woke up now and saw that all the balance in the card has been used up (only 0.68cents left) and he also deleted me from friend list and probably never gona add again, His personal information is mentioned on the card but i think its fake.

I know i made a foolish mistake and lost my money, but i want you guys for heads up never add a person for trade if they don`t have proper steamgifts profile & rep and offer you gift cards. It was probably a alt account and his real account is somwehere on steamgifts but i dont know which one. My trade link was http://www.steamgifts.com/trade/xI7p7/h-killing-floor-2-rust-ds2-divinity-os-lfd2-war-hammer-others-inside-w-tf2csgo-keys

I have edited the post due to steamgift rules, I have reported him on steamrep and i hope this will help other people from getting scammed by same method.

That guy added me a few days ago and tried to get Witcher 3 from me.. I said no simply.. his story didn't stick. His parents wouldn't let him use the card he got for his birthday from a friend bla bla bla..

If it's too risky just don't do it..

I feel you man and i'm sick of these bastards, they learn to live without honor.
But also you need to be careful and check reps on steamgifts, also install enhanced steam for google chrome, this will help you identify scammers and also make your steam gaming and trading life easier and more fun.

To be honest, I am really surprised how easy he scammed you. I wouldn't even add such a profile. Giving games first? well, okay.

That's what I was thinking too, his profile raises a lot of alarms. Then again I wouldn't do any direct money trade with anyone unless they had tons of rep and a solid steam account. We live and learn.

Don't think I am trying to be a dick to you mate but that story reeks of scam and its kinda baffling that how easy for him to scam you this way. I feel for you tho loosing 100 bucks worth games sucks :\ one more advice, never accept a friend request unless that person posts in your trading threads, good way to avoid scams.

Report his profile to steam support as well as a scammer, tho I guess they won't do jack since you did a trade outside trade window.

and what if he happens to be impersonating a legit SG user, which is what most scammers do? you end up mistakenly publicly shaming and destroying reputation of innocent user, just because you don't follow "ridiculous" no-calling-out rules.

Permalink

There is the possibility of providing a direct profile link. Only dumb people would blame the impersonated user after that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

people are dumb. and publicly shaming legit users because of impersonator happened on SG in the past. Also - a lot of times newbies QQing about scammers post not steam link, but SG link an impersonator posted to them as a proof of them being legit. Just because they don't know how to corelate Steam with SG account. Another example - let's say OP posts steam link, not SG link - but a newbie like one mentioned above will not correlate and stil will assume that this impersonator is this SG user. The rumor will spread, it can be mentioned months later on, basicaly undermining reputation of legit user forever (yeah, posts on forums/trades saying "be aware, he scammed someone few months ago" also did happen in the past - and all these situations did happen with no-calling-out rule. Without it there would be ten times more).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you are missing the point completely, linking to the specific profile is in no way anything like "publicly shaming legit users"
and dont use your "RUMORS!" "OTHER PEOPLE!" excuse. its a stupid rule and completely against singling out scammers/frauds, forcing people to circumvent the entire site's system and use some other website to check their reputation of the person, when you can just SPECIFICALLY LINK TO THE EXACT PROFILE IN QUESTION

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you're the one missing the point. What is the chance, even if you publicly post his profile that his next victim will see it? Especially as:
1) Threads get burried in SG in a matter of few hours
2) Hundreds of scams happen every day. If these topics were allowed you'd see nothing but valid and fake scam accusations all over the forum.
The chance is pretty damn small.

Now what is a chance of user mistakenly blaming innocent trader that got impersonated? Pretty damn high, as proven in the past plus the fact that he got scammed by impersonator = he believes it was real guy not impersonator, so will blame real guy.

So there is a low chance of you saving someone from being scammed at the cost of high chance of hurting someone innocent.

This is the reasoniong behind no-calling-out rule. It's been here for years and will stay for years to come I imagine. If someone is so offended by it that he cannot make himself follow it - noone is forcing him to be the part opf the community. You join community - you accept it's rules, not demand it accepting yours.

oh so now instead of "RUMORS! "OTHER PEOPLE!" its now "BURIED!" "FAKE!"
youre missing the point, its over your head and your making lame little excuses in every attempt to rationalize it.

lame excuses? excuse me - I'm the one that not only explains that it's the rule but also gives you multiple arguments why is it so. And all counterarguments you can come up with is putting single words taken put of context and rewrite them in all caps. For me and any intelligent person on he face of the planet - what you are doing is the actual definition of being lame ;)

Comment has been collapsed.

He isn't rationalizing anything, every bit of what Zelgadis explained to you is completely true and as someone who's been active in the SG trading community a long time I can guarantee you that it constantly happens, people are lazy they get a link from someone and just believe that the link is what they say it is, this is exactly the same reason it's so easy for people with malicious intent to hijack profiles with malware from fake websites.

I've had an impersonator dozens of times, and every time there's this 1 guy that thinks he's o so smart and that he could never get scammed by such an obvious scam yet once it does happen to them they get upset and start throwing my name around saying I scammed them, I've had to request multiple threads to be deleted, i've had to get multiple fake -rep removed etc, i've had to clear my name on SR multiple times etc.

If people want to vent because they got scammed they can do that on SR, that's what it's for not SG, SR looks into the tickets and if there's enough proof they'll mark him as a scammer, on SG it'll be on the first page of the discussions for maybe an hour and that's the end of it, it serves no purpose noone that might be a future victim will read it nor will anyone with any experience investigate the matter.

Damn, that sucks. Considering that you lost $100, I'm sure you'll never make the same mistake again. Never rush into a trade, no matter what, especially just before heading off to bed, too. That's when you're most likely going to make mistakes that'll end up biting you.

Ok, this is sad, but then again not all of us are scammers. So perhaps trade only with people who have a proper account here, but +rep requirement? That's a bit much don't you think? I mean, in order to get +rep, someone must have traded something successfully before, but how could they even start trading if everyone decided to not trust them from the beginning just because they don't have +rep yet, simply for the fact they never traded before and not for being bad traders or scammers?

Then it's a stalemate and yet another reason why this concept is a dead end really. There must be some kind of different way. I totally understand what you mean and I am totally all for protection of the traders, but even the best traders started from 0 in the reputation and sure they never scammed anyone, but they also had a chance to prove themselves as not scammers.

Revoking a gift? As in asking for a refund? How long have you been on Steam?? lol. Why do you think there are 30 day restrictions on trading gifts?

Lets stop for a moment and use something magical called "logic".

If trading through Steam was in any way unsafe, Valve would be in some serious trouble. Especially since they actively encourage people to use the trade window and specifically state that trading keys is not permitted nor supported.

Your usual scams list has plenty of scams I'm familiar with, but says absolutely nothing about the trade window being unsafe. What a surprise.

Where do I even begin? Have you actually read anything in that Reddit list you sent me?

The first answer you gave me is your wild speculation instead of the "logical answer". I'll use a once common example of scamming through Steam. Credit card fraud. When a credit card is stolen and used to pay for Steam games, the card owner can go to their bank and ask for those transactions to be reversed. So the bank takes the money back from Steam, and Steam takes the game out of your library. Simple. Now Valve were smart enough to put a 30 day waiting period on games before they get traded to other accounts, which means plenty of time to report that you've lost your card and reverse any transactions. This obviously isn't full proof, but most people tend to notice if their bank card is missing within 30 days. Valve know what they're doing.

I feel bad for you with the second answer you gave me. Mostly because it avoids addressing whether the trade window is safe and instead deviates into arguing about all the little things Valve hasn't fixed yet. I never stated Valve was perfect (because nothing and no one is perfect), I stated the trade window was safe. If you can provide evidence that it isn't, you're welcome to try again.

Ah I made a mistake about trading keys. Attempting to trade Steam game keys on the official Steam forum will get your account banned (no doubt because of potential scams), but Valve's official trading policy only states that you shouldn't trade for steam keys, not that you can get into trouble for trading them.

Going back to the Steam trade window, I'm beginning to think that your definition of "safe" is different than mine. If someone changes an item at the last second before they confirm the trade, that's NOT Valve's fault. They've already done everything they possibly can to make trading safe, even having you check a box to confirm the contents and automatically unchecking that box if the contents change. It's up to the person agreeing with the trade to check that everything is in order before finishing the trade.

Unfortunately, not everyone is honest. While I like to believe in human decency, you really need to watch who you put your faith in. I know I'm not one to talk, as I got scammed 3 different times by the same guy in a mmo. I learned my lesson though, and didn't let it happen again. I have never once been scammed when trading on Steam. Karma does have a glorious way of getting its revenge though. Later, after I had acquired tons of rare items in the game, I found the scammer. His account had been hacked, and he now had nothing of value. While I didn't actually want him to get hacked, it was a funny reminder that people do generally pay for their actions in the long run.

As a new trader, I'd suggest that you start off by conducing a few small trades with experienced traders who have a high reputation. Make sure that you are trading with the right person, and check to see if they have gotten any negative feedback. As you build up your own reputation, you'll begin to get a feel for trustworthy traders. Once you have a decent rep, most people won't have a problem with them trading first. Anyways, sorry for your loss of items. May the trades ever be in your favor from now on.
