I just throw in an idea: the guys in the lower left corner, around the postal 2 petition - the ingame petition was about making congressmen to play violent games. All the games in that group are nonviolent / kidfriendly ones (excluding postal 2, obviously :D )

The mage from trine near the box from portal prob means coop.
portal box is also close to the crowbar, a hint at valve games.
girl from Crypt of the NecroDancer is close to isaac probably means they're both rogue-likes/dungeon crawlers.
Alice from Alice madness, the girl from psychonauts and the other girl I don't remember are together because they are all female(?)
My last guess is that the undertale, super meat boy, dark souls are together because they're hard and also loved by some and hate by some other. (not sure why the girl from to the moon is there tho xD)

opinion: I find the art to make a good use of color as well as a high level of contrast in detail. A fair amount of arrangement of characters to help liven the whole atmosphere while still maintaining the spirit of the holiday season.
