more backpack space (300 slots, free players get only 50), ability to trade (give) items with other players, premium drops (free players can only drop normal/base items, no hats, no strange items, etc.)

Also, only way to get premium is to buy orange box or load 5$/5€ onto your steam wallet and buy something from mann co store (even 0.39€ gun will do). You get a hat 'proof of purchase', too.

TF2 wasn't always F2P, there are giftable copies of the game out there still.
It marks your account as premium and allows you to trade items and have increased backpack size.
