Similar story happened to my cousin. (More or less.)
Basically, he won some classic sportscar form a contest he entered.
Apparently the company tried to contact him through phone, but he didn't answer, as the phone number came up something like Arizona.
(He lives in Massachusetts, and knows no one from AZ.)
So basically he missed out on getting the car, and they game him a second prize, which was a broadsword, decked out in all patriotic stuff, complete with the Statue of Liberty in a glass ball for the pummel.
The sword is super cool, but it isn't a car.

On July 25th they posted "Congratulations to Joe MacConnell for winning our first ever sweepstakes!" then on the 30th they posted "The previous winner didn't claim their prize so as per the competition rules we have to pick a new winner. Congratulations to Joseph Palka, you are our new winner!"
Seems odd that they picked a new winner after 5 days and waited 2-3 weeks for you. Not to mention, 3 weeks would have been yesterday and 2 weeks would have been Monday. I would have just said "I messaged the person back yesterday/Saturday/whenever" you know?
Too bad the site is ugly as sin and no use to me.

So I just checked my Facebook messages on Saturday and found one that was sent to me on July 30th. Here is what it said:
"Hi Joseph,
Congratulations on winning our first competition, please let us know what game you would like a key for!
Regards,
The VideoGameCoupons.org team"
Surprised as I was, here is what I told him due to the fact I did not respond 2-3 weeks:
"Wait, can I still get a game? I didn't know I won because I have been busy!
If I had to choose a key for a game, it would be Mass Effect 3 Deluxe Edition for Origin. If that's not available, then Mass Effect 3 will do just fine. If I am able to reclaim a key for this game, then I will wait patiently. Thank you so much and have a great day!"
About an hour ago I received this message from the same person acknowledging my previous message:
"Hi Joseph,
You are still eligible to receive a game key as you were the second winner after the first winner didn't claim their ###prize. The key below is for Mass Effect 3 standard edition. Enjoy!
----**** (the key had numbers and letters and it worked fine)
We have a huge exclusive sale launching on Thursday that will feature 60% off over 80 popular games so check back and spread the word!
Regards,
The VideoGameCoupons.org team"
I then told him thanks for the game, and because what he said about the sale I want to spread the word about it happening this Thursday on the website.
In conclusion, sometimes you win something without even knowing until you check your messages thoroughly, or someone wins and forgets to respond in time. This time it was both, plus I guess I was lucky. If you enter a contest using one of your emails or accounts or whatever, don't forget to check for messages/notifications daily because you could miss an opportunity that I just nabbed from someone else. I suppose I should feel bad he/she missed their chance, but in this case I am apathetic.
If you had any opportunities where you acquired a free game because someone who won first missed out, or something related to that, don't be afraid to share it. Thanks for reading and keep on gifting, and remember in my world, participation and patience are two key elements that, when put together, can possibly make you a winner.
