Too many.

GOG
Uplay
Origin
Battle.net
Microsoft
Bethesda
Discord
Twitch
Epic Games
Rockstar
Arena.net
itch.io

And while it doesn't have a launcher, I think Humble should also qualify.

I'm probably even forgetting something.

You're right, it does have an optional launcher. I completely missed it since it's only advertised in a smaller banner at the top of the home page.

Fixed it. :)

I think what you are looking for is game clients. If you do a search for PC game clients, you will get a bunch of results for websites that rank the best or most popular Steam alternatives.

I take it that you mean stores where you can buy & download games (that don't just offer keys for other services)?

Apart from the ones mentioned earlier we also have places like:
Gamer's Gate
Big Fish
Humble Bundle (although it's mostly a key shop, they do have some games you can download from there)
itch.io

Windows, Mac OS, and Linux as far as current platforms.

If you mean available game launching clients, then:

  • Steam (Valve)
  • Battle.net (Activision—Blizzard)
  • Origin (EA)
  • UPlay (UbiSoft)
  • itch (itch.io)
  • Bethesda Launcher (Zenimax)
  • Epic launcher (Epic)
  • GOG Galaxy (CD Project Red)
  • Twitch (amazon)
  • Microsoft Store (Microsoft)
  • Discord app store (Discord)
  • Playism (Active)
  • Big Fish Games App (BFG)
  • Beamdog Client (Beamdog)
  • Paradox Launcher (Paradox Interactive)
  • Social Club Application (Rockstar/Take Two)

Some of these and a few others sell games with custom or DRM-free installers, or ZIP files (GameHouse, Humble Bundle, WinGameStore, GamesPlanet, GamersGate, Amazon Digital Store, and so on), but they are not exactly desktop clients.

If you mean digital stores for PC games, then too many.

I'd add GameSessions. It's not a full client but it's a download platform.

Is OnePlay dead? They bought Desura at some point, but I can't access the site now. They had a client.

Direct2Drive - I went there just now, and they offered me a free gaming subscription through a client, but damned if I can't find that client after that dialogue. The games I have there are downloadable as simple zip files. (Edit: Ah, the client can be downloaded by clicking "Your subscription is now activated" in the mail they sent. Totally intuitive.)

OnePlay is very dead, yes.
Ah, D2D. I tend to and often try to forget that the new one exists…

Interestingly, Gamefly has my original D2D purchase history, while D2D has my original D2D games (and no purchase history).

As for OnePlay, when did that happen? Was there any official word or did it just disappear one day?

Edit: Oh, and the Playfire client from Green Man Gaming is still functional. GMG is no longer selling games for download, but the old games are still there.

This is by far the best reply so far. Thumbs up, talgaby.

As a very minor addendum, there's also this thing called WildTangent Games. I don't know about nowadays, but the launcher used to come pre-installed in pre-built PCs, like from HP.

I know about this because a relative of mine started using it, and continues to today. It's awful. The client experiences crashes, but more often randomly pulls the player out of the game they are playing, minimizing it to the system tray. You also don't buy things with money directly: you buy "coins" which you can use to either purchase a game outright, or "rent" a game for a predetermined amount of time--y'know, because they can't make money on free demos. They used to encourage customers to pay a monthly plan for acquiring coins. Then, not only are many of the games crap, I think most of them are available on Steam, anyway.

The whole situation come off as super shady to me; in fact, I just tried to access their website, and I got one of those DATA CONSENT pop-ups.

  • Arc; Neverwinter
  • Trion Worlds/Glyph (owned by Gamigo); Defiance, Trove
  • Game Session; many games already on Steam
  • Wargaming.net; World of Tank (& others)
  • Gaijin; War Thunder

And many more exists, lots for F2P games.

Heh, this made me look for Get Games. Apparently closed a couple of years back. Good thing they were nice enough to replace my Borderlands download with a Steam key. Glad I managed to get that before they closed.

Yeah, I knew about this, but if you want access to your full library across multiple clients you'll have to open them all.
