So i have a copy if Assassins creed 2 and it says I need a ubisoft account, when I set up the game is it possible to get a steam key from them as I wont play it on uplay? (Id ask there but there website is a disaster and the question section doesnt work)

You have to play it on uplay even if you have it on steam. Launching it from steam will automatically install uplay and it will run it every time you run the game.

I know that doesn't answer your question in particular, but it may have a bearing on whether you want to even bother trying to get a steam key for it.

It does, thank you. If I have to use uplay, I wont bother with the game, I wont use uplay. I havent set up the game or even opened it. Thank you very much for your reply :)

Why not? It only takes like 10 seconds to open uplay and hit the play button for the game. It's not really any different than using steam.

The game is great and, really, I don't know what the fuss about it is. I don't mind it. It's the same game, doesn't matter if you run it over uPlay or Steam.

Agreed, uplay isn't really much of an issue, it's a lot different from Origin.

Yeah, it sucks a lot more than Origin ever did. Origin doesn't bloody blare muzak at you.

wow man, what you said cleared all up for whom don't want to use uplay to launch a game. I have AC:brotherhood on uplay and I was wondering the same thing as OP( I want a steam key as well. lol) But now, I know even on steam, uplay is passively installed and forced to run some games from ubi. I think I will get AC games one by one directly from ubi sale instead of buying from steam. thank for the info.

Create your uplay account (name, password and email), then play a great game.

It's not that much of a hassle after the the initial setup.

Maybe not, but the recent hacking attack Ubisoft suffered is enough to make me stay away.

Why? It's not like they're the only company who've ever been hacked. Will you run away from your Steam account if it happens to Valve?

So I'm guessing you also don't use psn, or xboxlive, or steam, because those have all been hacked in the past as well.

Shit gets hacked. It happens every day. No system is completely secure and if someone wants to get in bad enough they will eventually find a way.

i can understand not wanting uplay, seeing how they were attacked earlier this month/last month. itll just be nice if uplay and Origin had a better UI and not force the need for additional programs to play the games especially if you buy them from steam.

Its just that exactly. I have steam, my friends are on steam, I dont want other game UI clients. Especially with a game I 'might' kinda play I have a box copy of that requires online DRM and some lame client

This is the response I got from them last year, after asking if there's a possibility to get a Steam key from them for free or by paying a small fee:

Thank you for contacting Ubisoft Technical Support regarding Assassin's Creed: Revelations. In order to respond to this email, please update this incident (Please do not create a new incident). Unfortunately we are not able to provide you with Steam keys for the game. In order to transfer all your games to Steam you would have to purchase the games directly from them. If you have any further queries or issues please do not hesitate to contact us again and we will assist you further.

So no, you can't get a Steam key from them. And Steam comes with Uplay still, so you will need a Ubisoft account regardless.

You guys seem to be forgetting that, steam has been hacked in the past before, and not just once. No system/platform is secure. NONE.

Personally I would rather to just deal with steam instead of freaking 3-4 programs but thanks to EA and Ubisoft I have to deal with other programs. One day Ubisoft MIGHT drop their Uplay system ( doubt it. ) but we all know EA wont drop theirs lol. Something we sadly have to deal with due to enough people accepted it as being ok so these companies are going to do it.

edit
Besides that, not much of a hastle with making a uplay account. I have Farcry 3 ( did not buy that one on steam.. bought it on sale somewhere else and it did not activate on steam sadly. ) and Heroes of Might and Magic VI. Enjoyed both quite a bit. Farcry 3 probably more than HM&MVI tho. ( But still enjoyed it. Like it more than V... that is 5 if you are wondering, and VI is 6..)

I really don't understand what's the problem with uplay...of course I would like to have all my games in the same place, but if there is no other way of playing them, just fuc*ing open uplay....are really not going to play any Ubisoft game because of this?

The steam version of the game also needs an ubi account. On the steam version, you can just open the game from steam and that's pretty much it. It's like adding a non steam game to your library.
