Think about it like this, your walking around without any weapons in an area filled with wolves ready to jump out and attack you, having your own wolf along to defend you (through fighting the other wolves) is then self defence, see I can justify this part as not being animal cruelty , but not the battles and competitions then XD , screw it, although pokemons aren't stupid so it isn't like we are taking advantage of them... hmmmmmmm ... animal cruelty would be the trainers who just let their pokemon get hurt and don't care about healing them... hmmmmm ... damnit you're making me question myself so much!

" animal cruelty would be the trainers who just let their pokemon get hurt and don't care about healing them..."

you mean like every trainer that you beat who decides to stand in the same spot for all eternity with dead pokemon

If it's in their nature to attack people or other pokemons, i don't feel like it. They deal with this urge in a controlled area this way. Like using a cow to get milk in a farm. But this is only based on one sentence so i might be defending my opinion a little too strong. :D

Edit: Also they "evolve" when they fight. It's like education. :o

Did you just say "intelligent" and "magikarp" in the same sentence ... shit the world is about to implode

They're intelligent enough for basic communication and following commands. Wouldn't it be like eating a dolphin or gorilla?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Damn ... that's true ... but if we had dolphins like we do fish (a shit ton) then I guess it wouldn't feel as immoral ... also in some countries they eat Guinea Pigs, dogs and animals like that which can be taught commands and behavioural patterns ... so ...

Not entirely sure as it's been quite some years. But I think that scene on the gif is from before they find out that you can't really eat them.

I think there are really two sides to this.

When you care for and nurture your pokemon, and use them as guard animals, then I think it's justified. Like guard dogs would often be used to keep wild animals away, and protect their owners during the middle ages. This actually seems to be needed to even survive in the world of Pokemon, as it's a dangerous place with lots of animals roaming the countryside.

When you on the other hand have pokemon fight against each other in these fighting rings, then it's no different from when you've got dog fights, where people watch two (or more) dogs fight, and bet on which one will win.

If pokemon were real they'd be animals, which would make it animal cruelty and highly illegal in most places to arrange pokemon fights of any sort. Luckily they're not real, so making pokemon fight is at worst digital cruelty... which is generally legal.

No - it's stated a bunch of times in diffrent pieces of Pokemon media (but mostly the anime) that Pokemon enjoy getting into scraps and like working with trainers because they like getting stronger. Wild Pokemon approach trainers in the hopes of being captured and trained.

It's like boxing or wrestling for them. Sometimes you do get knocked out ('faint') buti t's worth it.

like any other living being pokemons physically compete against their opponent to affirm themselves as a valid specimen of their species in order to gain from it (territorial control, right to breed, nourishment, to be or not to be food, ...). furthermore there is the evolution factor (theoretically +1 in the food chain position), which is only achieved through fight. they are born for war, like everybody else. pokemon trainers are basically exploiting nature, to the point that from it a small economy was born, with public request, jobs, money incomes, investements, wealth, and such.

anima cruelty? kinda, maybe. depends on your views on that abstract thing called "rights"

Is killing on GTA murder?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The question isn't if making pokemon fight in our world is cruelty or not, because obviously pokemon do not exist in the real world, the question would be stupid if that was the case. The question is if making pokemon fight in their fictional universe is animal cruelty. Yea, killing in the GTA universe is murder in their respective universe but it's not murder in ours.

I know your question wasn't serious don't worry. I didn't dissect your question on its own but in relation with HairyMan's question because his seemed just wrong and grinded my gears real bad, couldn't help it.

Is just fiction, you can do anything you want in a fictional media and it can be considered fine. In many games you're pretty much a mass murderer but that doesn't imply that you'd actually kill someone IRL.

Yes. Recall one episode (something with "Island" in the name) where the trainers and pokemon were separated and the assorted Pokemon just hung out and had a good time. no fights.
