civ V is easier to get into, has some pretty graphics, steam integration, and nice overall.
But if i had to choose one of the two to play for eternity, i'd choose Civ IV over Civ V, in top of that, civ 4 have more mods that add hughe replayability
even the lead designer has posted in his kickstarter about civ V 'things' that could have been done better http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jonshafer/jon-shafers-at-the-gates

It would be a good change if the AI knew how to handle it. It's much too easy to bog everything down with just a few units and the AI is too bad at pathing its own units to really handle the one-unit-per-tile rule.

From the experiences ive had I much prefer Civ IV, however I haven't played Civ V with any of the expansions yet.

Civ 5 is much easier and beginner-friendly, but Civ 4 has much better AI, better multiplayer, better diplomacy, deeper strategy and way better mods.
