So pretty much this year I got a C in Spanish 1. Even with a lot of studying, the class is very hard. Even native speakers don't even make an A in the class, they usually make a B.

On top of that there is a LOT of material that I simply do not understand. And jumping into Spanish II next year is pretty much suicide.

Is retaking the class a good idea?

never retake a course.
unless you failed

Why not? Going into Spanish II is pretty much suicide; I don't even understand some Spanish 1 material. Plus that C on my GPA is really going to mess me up.

it almost sounds as if you already decided to retake the class. Why are you asking for external input?

To determine whether to retake or not.

I've in uni for 10 years now. Trust me, no course is worth the trouble
If you think you can get A+, i woukd consider...

The thing is, it doesn't mean much in the final grade.
Guess i'm not a super achiever, but i prefer to rest and live.

As a native Spanish speaker I can tell you that Spanish has a LOT of grammatical rules and they change very often.
I failed calculus 2 times, and at my third try, I got an A+, that was one of the best days of my life man.

I will not give you an affirmative or negative answer man, this is up to you.
I just can share my experience about the topic and I can tell you that when you approve a failed class it feels awesome.

You can consider taking Spanish II then brushing up during the summer. It's what I would do.

True, but with the C it will mess up my GPA.

Many native English speakers don't get an A in English either.
Are you taking the class because you want to learn Spanish or is it because it's a requirement? If it's the latter just move on. No one will look down on you because you got a C in Spanish and one class won't kill your overall GPA. If you are actually planning on using the language in your work or everyday life though I would retake it. It only gets harder as you go higher.
It's been 25 years since I had to take any foreign language classes and because I never used any of it I forgot most of it.

I am required to take two years of foreign language.

Are you required to take two years of the same foreign language? It would be easier if you could take Spanish I and the first year of any other language.

(Spanish is a language rather easy to talk/read but really hard to speak as it would be your mother language. My father in law was born in the USA, he has been 40 years living in Spain and he still makes some errors with verbs and the a/o ending in nouns)

Yes. My brother is recommending me to go into German, should I do that?

Most people consider German to be harder to learn than Spanish, and you're much more likely to encounter Spanish than German. Personally, I took German because I wanted to know what the Nazis were saying in the Indiana Jones movies. Plus, a group from our school would go to Germany for a month every two years and I really wanted to go. My German was never very good, but a lot of them speak English anyways, so it was all worth it!

But from your personal standpoint was in harder than Spanish?

I'd say yes, but it kind of depends on how you use your mouth. Spanish is a softer language, that flows more easily, whereas German is more of a rhythmic language that really needs a lot of enunciation.

Hmmmm, well German is really my only choice. So should I go for it, or not?

Since you need two years of one language, and you already have one year of Spanish completed, just knock out Spanish II and move on with your life. Maybe it'll click more in the second year. Some people are like that. Once they start getting more immersed in it, they understand it a lot better. Or maybe you'll just scrape by, but either way, you'll be done with it.

Yes, that is a choice. But my amigo, who is in Spanish II currently; was doing the same in Spanish I. And right now he has a C; and he says it is much much harder! I have no idea if I should take the risk. Because next year I am going to be doing a lot.

Because I signed up for cross country next year, and they force you to train afterschool.

No, just get a tutor and continue on to the next year. I took 4 years of Spanish up to the AP level. I don't remember any of it now because I never used it in actual life.

That's literally ALL my Spanish 1 teacher made me do and at the end of it I didn't know anything, yet still got an 88 since she was a terrible teacher and the class was awfully easy. Spanish 2 so far, I'm actually learning to put things together and my new teacher goes over things with us.

Languages are the best thing to learn, according to my teachers, french, italian and spanish are hard to learn because of verbs, but don't be afraid, retake it, one day it will very useful for you.

It looks like you want to retake the class
IMO you should study hard to keep up with Spanish II and not waste time retaking anything unless you really need to

This makes me really uncomfortable, I don't think you should base yours 'should I or not', in a forum. Not trying to be rude tho

Do whatever you feel like it's the best for you future. (:

I recommend checking out the offerings at Duolingo (https://www.duolingo.com/) as well as the courses over at Spanish MOOC (http://spanishmooc.com/). They are all free of charge, though Duolingo encourages folks to help translate material for websites such as wikipedia. SpanishMOOC uses popular Spanish music to help teach people the language. Both methods rock!
