Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month.

The prize: 2x ANIMAL WELL
Note: This means I'm giving away two copies of the game and will have 2 winners.

Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.

Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add you on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.

FAQ:

Why you doing this?

I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over eight years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.

I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?

No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.

Can I play a MP only game?

No. It needs to have an "end" in order for me to count it as beaten, so it needs to have a campaign/story mode.

If a game was sold as a non-Steam copy in a bundle (origin/uplay/drm-free/etc), can I pick it as a choice if I own a Steam copy?

No. The reason being that those who own a Steam copy would have an extra option that would not be available to everyone who bought the same bundle. If the game was originally sold as a non-Steam copy, but Humble later provided steam keys to everyone who bought the bundle, then the game would be allowed.

Why six games?

The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.

How long are you going to do this?

Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.

This event "ends" on September 3rd when the next next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to share your food..

I'm late but I'll try to catch up!

Game Status Impressions
Gris / Started on August 18th / Finished✔ on August 20th The End. Before playing: Played it before in my pirating days and I was left dumb to all "feels and vibes" of this game. It was probably due to my moods and chemical imbalance at the time, cause my brother, who is much more skeptical to artsy indies, liked the game very much. After playing: It's still too simple for me. Of course, you yourself can work extra overtime to try to imbue deeper meaning into narrative and more sense into events. But what the game actually gives you are beautiful but almost minimalistic art and competent but almost primitive platforming. The plot and themes are so unintrusive, so watered down by symbolism that you can actually made whatever you like of it. In short I'm saying that the game is about Saddam Hussein.
Amanda the Adventurer / Finished✔ on August 24th The End. Before playing: It think it's fair to say that most "spooky mansion" games are using mostly the same (even overused) jumpscare tricks. Usually it's the "theme" of the horror that makes or breaks a good horror game. After playing: Oh, it's not a horror walking simulator at all! It's a creepy "escape room". I liked it, even though I carried my confused misjudgment of the game through all my 5hours playing it. Expected jumscares never came, but unexpected abstract puzzles attended.
Kill It With Fire / Started on August 19th / Finished✔ on August 19th The Only Way To Be Sure (The logical conclusion to ever escalating joke of the game - a nuclear bomb in the finale). Before playing: With action comedy games especially I sometimes wonder if the comedy was the purpose or the necessity to save core game mechanics that they couldn't fit into something more ambitious and serious. After playing: Not sure that the game should be tagged as "simulation". The world is rather inflexible and the main game mechanics is more of "hidden objects" type. But it's all structured rather nicely and I had fun.
The Darkside Detective / Started on August 20th / Finished✔ on August 23th That's a Wrap (End credits play after the 6th case (the end of the main storyline), there are also 3 bonus cases, I solved them too) . Before playing: I have so many "Point & Click" games in my library! And now I understand that I can gather motivation to play them only for challenges like CJ's. After playing: The sincere simplicity of the whole game took me by surprise. It's pure "point & click" with little variety and crude pixel graphics, barely animated. And the plot and dialogues all have feeling to be written on the spot by one man/woman. And the game is well-received. Compare this to "Backbone" game where developer team literally buckled under pressure and never achieved their goals to much public criticism. Made me think about life things.
Calico / Started on August 24th / Finished✔ on August 25th 100%. Before playing: I see this game a lot. It wasn't bundled that much but it seems that everyone has it. This game is almost an inside joke or even better: a badge of belonging to "bundles/gifts community". After playing: It's saccharine cute, not in a insincere way, but they probably overdid it a little bit. Also It doesn't help that the core gameplay is mostly fetch quests that don't pose any challenge and despite the effort don't really help flesh out multiply characters (21 of them that you differentiate mostly by the color palette of their clothes rather than their roles in the narrative) . But in the end I felt satisfaction of completing the game and all because of the CJ's challenge: minus one indie from my backlog.
High On Life / Started August 25th / Finished✔ on August 27th Carried Stan's Load to Completion (complete the game...). Before playing: I expect mostly Morty-humor from "Rick & Morty" style of c-c-comedy. I hope, they managed to pace it smartly and I hope it's at least a competent FPS. After playing: "You judged the book by its farts" - this joke was near the end and it filled me with sudden appreciation of how well they meshed actual gameplay with their "plot" (something picked up from cutting room floor of "Interdimensional Cable"). It's a real feat, cause usually gameplay and plot go in parallel lines even in the best games.

Hey, if I started playing a game on August 1st, does that count for this?

I think it's from the 6th of August since the Humble Choice released that day (First Tuesday of the month)

Hi. The event start/end time syncs with the Humble monthly so no. It is as Lironezzz said, anything before the 6th is not allowed.

Hello hello! Quick question.
I wanted to play Little Nightmares (September 2018 Humble Monthly #35) as one of my games and it seems I've played it once upon a time in 2019. Would playing it still be an option or is it no good? I also earned one achievement as you can see.

No, the rules are extremely clear about it.

I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?

No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.

I was just wondering if there were any exceptions and if my case applies, guess not.

Starship Troopers

It reminded me of Into the Breach a little bit (albeit in real time), as combat scenarios are basically puzzles and you have to be wary of your troops' positioning at all time. The setting was a bit undercooked, as there are some basic Starship Troopers themes (fascism, propaganda) thrown for a good measure, but they don't lead anywhere interesting. So all in all decent game, but had potential for more 7/10.

Stray Gods

I'm not particularly fond of muscials, but that's not something that you see everyday in gaming so I really wanted to check it out. Turns out Stray Gods is basically a choose your own adventure visual novel in the vein of telltale or dotnod games, but without exploration of 3d world. I liked characters and some of the songs, but it certainly wasn't anything groundbreaking and Hades was much better in remixing greek mythology. 6/10 for me but probably better for people that love musicals.

Mind Scanners

Weird game, certainly inspired by great Papers please. Long story short, you use bizzare equipment to treat mental disorders in dystopian sci-fi setting. Gameplay can get a bit repetitive toward the end, but I plunged for another playthrough straight after the first one, so I guess it's not that bad. 7.5/10

Scorn

H.R. Giger/ Zdzislaw Beksinski amusement park. Stunning visuals and pretty terrible gameplay, especially combat. Thankfully the game is short. 4/10

Alien Isolation

After disappointment that was Scorn I was craving something better in horror department. I picked Alien Isolation, game that I played and loved 10 years ago. Not much changed, it's still fantastic and infinitely better than most alien movies (didn't see Romulus yet). I strongly recommend playing on Survivor difficulty which really pumps alien's aggression. Only thing that this game needs right now is HD texture pack and fix for the fps issue. 9/10

Syberia 3

I really love earlier Syberia games. Sadly this one's a mess. Especially on technical side of things ( bugs, crashes, constant fighting with absolutely awful controls {best to use controller for some things and keyboard + mouse for when controller starts being problematic} and even worse camera angles) but to be frank, story isn't that much better. It lacks any substance, there are only a few memorable characters who have something to do besides waiting for main character to rescue them, and worst of all it ends with a predictable cliffhanger. There are some okay-ish puzzles, Kate's stlil gorgeous and that's that. I hope that Syberia The World Before is a much better game. 5/10

Chicken Police - Paint it RED! Apr 2022 24/31 Chicken Police is back together?! 13.5h* Finished

*for now, gonna 100% it

It's the first month in which not a single game was 'meh'; all of them were good.

I'm a sucker for games like Shadow Tactics; I don't even know what the genre is called, but it's my favorite. I also didn't realize before playing that the same devs made Desperados III.

The Spiral Scouts — puzzles are fun, but the amount of lewd jokes and pubic hair were quite a surprise. That's what you get when you don't watch trailers carefully. No regrets, though; just wasn't expecting that.

Children of Silentown is the weakest here, I guess. Nothing to write home about, but it's still a decent puzzle-adventure game.

Gamedec is a good game overall, but it is so unpolished, forgive me, Poles. Damn, I don't remember the last time I played such an unpolished game; probably never. It felt like I was playing a late beta or a just-released game where the devs didn't have enough time to comb through it properly to find bugs and inconsistencies. Also, I wish I had chosen a 'true detective' mode — I got overwhelmed by the number of possible actions & choices, so I used Save & Load quite often. In true detective mode, you can't manually save, and I think it is a playstyle that suits this game better (and was intended as such, at least for the first playthrough).

Chicken Police — damn, what voice acting. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Without the voice acting, the game wouldn't be so good, though; it's the heart of it. It has a rather slow pacing with a lot of dialogue, so it may not be for everyone.

All in all, it was my best month so far.

When I saw this months game, I wanted to give it a shot since it really reminds me of Rain World on drugs.
I was also looking forward to play Plague Tale Requiem. I'd say it didn't disappoint even through I liked the first part better. It was full of cute family adventures with pet rats, nice and friendly story too^^
Personally my favourite of the month is Universe for Sale. Unique but maybe a bit too much, I was sometimes lost a bit. I'd like a bit more time exploring, it was short to fully dive into the story. Also parts of the story are in random order for everyone probably? I was watching a playthrough, making sure that I didn't miss anything, but my game had different order.. huh interesting :D

Had a bit of a weird month so I mostly ran through some short games this past weekend.

Games:

HUSK from February 2017

achievements - "Easy Breezy / Total Snakeage"
Play time got messed up by +8 hours or so due to ye olden-tyme idler issues.

Husk's storytelling leaves a bit to be desired, but the overall gameplay is a solid enough survival horror scenario, even if it does pace itself even more slowly than some of its spiritual forebears.

Amanda the Adventurer from May 2024

achievements - "The End"

I'm a sucker for meta stuff and FMV, so Amanda the Adventurer's storytelling was a treat (and occasional belly laugh) for me. Some of the puzzles could feel slightly obtuse, but nothing the occasional look at a text guide can't fix.

Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery from May 2023

achievements - "Behind the Frame"

It's a simple story at its heart, but Behind the Frame is swiftly paced enough that you don't get bored of the gameplay before it's over. Just when your daily routine appears set, something comes in to throw a curveball, which carries your attention through to the ending.

Little MIsfortune from November 2020

achievements - "Somewhere Else"

The developers' labor of love really shines through in Little Misfortune's storytelling. Misfortune herself is a charming child who feels genuine in the sense that she behaves similarly to how you would expect an actual child to act in her shoes, and the art style backs everything up beautifully. The control scheme could feel a bit annoying when you want to draw something with your mouse, but can't, but other than that, it's an endearing and engaging adventure.

Etherborn from March 2020

achievements - "End"

Etherborn is definitely a game where I wanted to press F12 for a lot of screenshots; the art style perfectly captured a "beautiful wasteland" type of world the game was going for. Unfortunately, in later levels it also had me pressing ALT+TAB for a video guide to make sure I was doing the puzzles in the right order. At the very least, it's short so it doesn't wear itself out too much, but I don't know if I would want to try the New Game+ option.

Mediterranea Inferno from May 2024

achievements - "First Try"

While I can't quite relate to some of the things our protagonists do and feel in Mediterranea Inferno, the writing generally does well to pace those more specific moments with more broadly relatable allegories of human and societal struggle. Throughout the game, I vacillated between finding each protagonist likable and detestable, which speaks to the depth and awkwardness that comes with knowing and loving others.

Let's try to share my thoughts for the first time for the sake of variety.

Fashion Police Squad. Surprisingly awesome game. I loved both humor and gameplay. I find it amusing that every enemy type can be defeated only by a certain weapon and how it's explained.

High On Life. Surprisingly meh game. I like platforming and weapons, but the story and characters are blank. The humor got boring after 2 hours, and the developers' attempts to make any jokes every minute became simply exhausting.

Lacuna. Again it was awesome. Unusual puzzles, complex characters and good story with multiple choices. Only downside - I need to beat it 8 times to get all the achievements. Maybe I'll do it later. Maybe not.

Nex Machina. Good short simple twin-stick bullet hell. I liked it. But it's kinda difficult for me.

Backbone / Tails Noir. Like Lacuna it's a pixel graphic noir detective. Unlike Lacuna it sucks. It started as an amusing detective, but shotrly it threw away all noir storylines and became fantastic body horror only to throw it away again, start a plotline about a revolution and suddenly break off. It has awesome beginning and quite crappy ending.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. Quite good interactive movie. But I need to beat it dozen times to get all the cheevos. That's bummer.
