Obviously there are many Epic Games on PC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Epic_Games_games
I suggest trying Jazz Jackrabbit, but your requirements pretty much only fit Gears of War.

Freelancer (2003) - a massive space opera with hundreds of planets and dozens of solar systems, the campaign will take you 30-35 hrs to complete and then you're left to free roam and explore. And oh boy, there is some exploring to do! There's significant number of hidden systems and planets, you get access to even more ships and missions, basically giving you options to "play it as you like". Want to be a space pirate? Sure! Wealthy merchant/trader or a sneaky smuggler? Absolutely!
Also, unlike in Skyrim, your actions here make an impact, drastically changing your relations with several factions, so your reputation can help you or haunt you depending on what you've done in the game.
There is also multiplayer which is kind of like a small-scale MMO, servers are usually for 64 or 128 players and you can 100% roleplay and create your own storyline online.
BTW did I mention it was made by famous Chris Roberts? aka the same dude that's making Star Citizen!
BTW 2 the game has really awesome cast - Ian Ziering, Jennifer Hale, George Takei...

About Mass Effect: the first 1 is a true gem, but in my opinion the others are not.
ME2 is a little bit short on the main plot (for that, it's clearly made to end with a nice "to be continued" that means "buy the next one"). Some side (but important) characters were locked for everyone but people who bought the extra expensive $$$ editions (maybe not any more in 2014).
ME3 is a bad ending (still in my opinion ^^), the most enjoyable part is seeing again your previous team mates. Which is possible only if you bought the extra $$$ edition of ME2 and import your savegame into ME3.
I would say that ME is another great licence killed by EA's greed, but someone would probably say that I'm a EA hater, so I'm keeping my mouth shut :)

I'm looking for something EPIC. The Ben Hur of games.
I want scope, and I want depth.
I want to soar the skies, climb mountains, slalom through buildings, and destroy behemoths.
I want to tackle philosophical issues, change the world.
I want to see the world flourish, I want to see it burn down.
I want exceptional writing, beautiful music scores, and stunning scenery.
Basically, I want a game that got lots and lots of money thrown at it, but managed to not suck.
I would have been interested in CoD: Ghosts, with its really world-spanning story, but it's getting panned on Steam reviews, and I'm not willing to risk that much money on a mediocre game.
So anyone?
Edit: Thanks for these suggestions! Mass Effect is probably one of the most 'epic' game out there. I should try that someday when I get the chance. I'm also getting lots of great games that aren't necessarily 'epic'. Although CoD: Ghosts might be shallow, it looks like it's got some breadth, so I personally consider it as an 'epic', if not in quality, then at least in quantity. But it's personal opinion, and I can't really be bothered to argue linguistics on the internet. It never ends well.
