I'd go for Solid Snake although I practically forgot everything about MGS and MGS2. As a kid I didn't understand Raiden but, after some gameplays I think that meanwhile you play with him you get to know Snake, Otacom and the old bunch. Its like he is the rookie, like you. Without playing 4 and 5 i guess my vote its not very valuable.

About the poll, there's a bit of an issue there because the very existence of Venom Snake and him not being the actual Big Boss is an enormous spoiler, just saying.
