Welcome back, and congratulations! What did you major in?

That's awesome! I did my Bachelor's in Information Technology and my Master's in Information Systems. I am currently a software engineer at a large financial services firm.
The IT field is simultaneously a field with lots of open positions and a hard one to get into. The hardest part is that you need to continuously study outside of work to make sure you keep your skills current, since everything you have learned will be obsolete within 4-6 years. Is there a specific field of IT you want to get into? My background is in software development, but depending on which area you focused on in school you could also do networking, hardware, security, or data science, and there are many sub-categories of each. If you're looking into software development (business systems, not game design), I can reply with some pointers for what I looked for when conducting technical interviews for entry and mid-level positions.

That's a very interesting background, thanks a lot for sharing. I have actually stumbled across a very interesting website on information systems, had to research them for a project I completed recently and seems like a very interesting field.
And yeah, that's kind of the beauty of IT, it's a continuous learning process. It might surprise you, but I am currently more interested in pursuing the Project Management field. I have had a few interviews at large organisations for a graduate project manager role, and by researching and partaking in them I really developed an interest in a career in project management. I also had an upcoming final interview for a graduate data scientist role at BMW, but unfortunately that was all cancelled because of Covid-19, so not much can be done about that. Also funnily enough the interviews coming up aren't for a project manager role either, instead they are technology graduate schemes with rotations across different departments within the business.
To be perfectly honest I am still not completely sure which field of IT I want to pursue, but I would say that the one that has piqued by interest the most would have to be project management. When I mentioned that I feel that Computer Science might have not been the right degree for me, is mainly because I consider to have a much better skill set of soft skills rather than hard skills when it comes to IT in general. My programming skills are average, and compared to some of my course mates I wouldn't stand a chance in an interview for a job in software development if it happened right now. (I am planning to improve over the summer, it really needs to happen)

It's a shame the BMW position fell through. Hopefully there are some other positions in a similar role without having to relocate too far. I know that a lot of companies are on a hiring freeze regardless of whether they are conducting layoffs or not (that is what my company is currently doing with a few exceptions). Keep applying though, and make sure to follow up with the companies you apply to so you stay on their radar when they do open up again.
If you are going the project management route, I would suggest looking into getting started in a role as a lower level manager first (in a somewhat technical capacity). In the IT field, learning some agile methodology such as Scrum or SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) will do you wonders for getting into a management role. Take note that you may also want to find your niche in some sort of IT technical role before you get into IT project management. Depending on the company it can be difficult to get into a management role, especially a project management role, without either prior management experience or real-world technical experience (defined as a paid role in some hands-on technical work such as programming). I'm definitely not saying it's impossible; you proved it's possible with the BMW interview. Just make sure the keep your doors open in case you need to take the longer path to get there.
Regardless of which route you take, good luck getting where you want to be! IT is a field that will probably continue to grow until AI starts programming itself, at which point humans will not have jobs anymore :)

Apologies for the late reply, I have been busy with an interview I recently had. Very weird experiencing an online interview for the first time, but was pretty good all around. Finding out if I got the job in about a week's time.
The beauty with hiring in the UK for recent graduates is that their graduate programmes are made to teach you the role, so for example when I apply for a graduate Project Manager role I'm essentially applying to join a scheme that will teach me everything there is to know about the role. Most companies here take the first 18-24 months to teach graduates and bring them up to speed with what they are expected to do, after which they settle into a permanent role.
I appreciate the advice, I am already fairly familiar with Scrum methodology but I will definitely checkout SAFe.

Congrats on the latest interview! From my experience in the US, colleges in general tend to lean more toward the theoretical side, which doesn't completely translate to real-world applications and soft skills. I'm glad the UK is better about that :)
Let us know if you get the job. I'm interested to hear the progress.

I feel like I totally know where you're coming from, since I too have a Comp Sci degree but felt that my programming skills coming out of college were pretty poor.
I ended up going into the support side of IT to be a system and network administrator.
One thing I found about interviews is that they're a crap shoot, and so much depends on the person you interview with. I applied for one job as a system and network administrator that required security clearance at a small company, and the person I interviewed with - the co-owner of the company - hit it off from the start. I was nervous because I got stuck in traffic and ended up being 45 minutes late, but they were very understanding, the interview felt really comfortable and casual, he was really impressed with my skills, the two owners took me out to lunch afterwards, and it was just a really pleasant experience. I got an offer from them right away.
Unfortunately, I had to move and I couldn't accept the position. So I interviewed for a junior system administrator position at a college, and it was a completely different experience. The network administrator at the college started grilling me on my networking skills, when I wasn't even interviewing for a network admin position, and it was obvious that she was completely unimpressed by my answers. I did not get that position.
Interviews are such a random event. At my last job, what I considered the least impressive thing on my resume was actually the thing that caught their attention and got me an interview. I later learned I was one of 300 applicants for that position. It feels like you just have to try and try until you get lucky, just like SG. :)

I have had fairly similar experiences with interviews. For example, when I interviewed at Vodafone it felt the interviewer was so uninterested in anything I had to say and generally felt extremely disengaged. When I interviewed at Ericsson, I felt very engaged and felt more like a conversation about me where the person interviewing me was very interested in what I had to say and felt like he genuinely enjoyed talking to me. It's really hit and miss in my experience too.
I'm lucky to have a bunch of different things on my CV that I can discuss, my university has been really good in terms of things I could discuss in interviews and could potentially attract the attention at CV stage.

Hey, long time no speak!
Yeah, I do miss it too. Perhaps I might look at restarting the group at some point, since after job interviews I should have a fair amount of free time as most of the positions don't start until September. We'll just have to see how it goes.

Would be nice.
Lets see how it turns out.

Good to see you back! :D You don't need to give to join in on the community. Keeping this place alive in one way, or the other is a good thing in my eyes. Hope all is well!

Hey Nopzor! You know you don't have to come bearing gifts, right? You're missed and we don't need giveaways for you to hang around ;)
I hope you're doing well. Financial situation non withstanding. Haven't worked in 3 months so I know what you mean.

Yes, of course. Although when you are the self-entitled Cat Santa, it kinda sucks when you can't come bearing gifts all the time. I guess I'll just have to settle for smaller presents for now!
And yeah, haven't worked since March and it's been a bit rough. I am being furloughed which is nice, but it's a few hundred less than I'd normally earn because of the way they worked out my salary (I on a 0 hour contract, which basically means I only work when there is work)

Hello, been lurking on Steamgifts recently and kind of miss this community. Can't really afford to come back financially, but thought I'd drop a humble bundle left over for the time being, and maybe more in the future.
It's good to see you Steamgifts, hope everyone is doing as well as they can be given the current situation!
Give gib pls
