Hi guys,
If you are reading this, maybe you have a second to do me a favor.
Recently, due to the worlds situation and difficulties working our day jobs (restaurant and hotel) my mother and I have been struggling to get by. And now our washing machine broke. My university has launched a contest in which you can win an amazon gift card and I would use it to buy a new washing machine for my mother. The contest has an open voting:
https://www.menti.com/tszw8wdp4m
so if you would vote for Leonie Nastassia Noel here it would mean the world to me. Cheers!
In addition to that I have created 2 giveaways here that you can enter into:
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/sCQhc/screencheat
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/REsl4/11-11-memories-retold
And a secret less public one of a game I originally wanted to keep for myself, but I'm giving it up for this cause:

I've reviewed the entries and voted for yours - it's definitely the most clever one :-) However, I think it's not a good idea that your university opened this vote for everyone, because most likely it'll be down to the one with the most friends on social media etc. who will win in the end. It's also very easy to manipulate - I probably could have voted like a few hundred times with a VPN. The vote should have been closed for registered members of your university only. Anyway, good luck and perhaps you could let us know about the results later on?

I absolutely agree with you. And while I would have originally felt very bad to post here and manipulate the vote in a way, I now feel like it's important to point it out to my university that they need to lock this vote for people not registered as students from my university. For example: we have about 300 students in total, but 30.000 people have voted so far.

Yes you should definitely reach out to them, they should stop the vote and reopen it only for students, members of staff and so on. Or maybe just have a jury pick the best entry instead (I think you'd have much better chances to win with a jury because your entry has an interesting idea). Let me know how it goes.

I'm writing an E-Mail to them right now, because the Vote Count is now over 80.000.
I feel like having a Jury pick is indeed more fair, or combining a jury vote and that of all students.

Make sure you include that with so many votes coming in so fast, it's most likely that someone's using a script for automated voting. I also noticed the voting site does not even seem to have an IP lock or anything, meaning you can just reopen the URL and vote again. They really should stop this.

Voted. Good luck on your mission.

Also, it is very likely that this voting procedure to be easily exploitable. Public votes are never a good thing. Nor are contests of this kind without having judges to do "final judgement" instead of voting, the person with the highest social reach in the social platforms is the one that usually wins this stuff. It's not a fair contest, so to say.

if you mean on this site - she should be ok since she is not asking for this in order to join the giveaways (and neither am i)

It's the asking part itself i believe, where it doesn't matter if there is a return or not, because if everyone would make a thread with come vote for this or that, it becomes chaotic (or imagine two people asking for votes in the same competition).
Putting this in a private giveaway itself should be okay i think?

Rules here are always bound to change (i am not making them), so i am not 100% sure either and depends which mod reads it, i am just saying it as a precaution.

I always had an episode in mind years ago, where someone asked spare trading cards so he could sell it and bought a card and teddy bear for some kid with needs, he got suspended twice even.
In essence cards, votes they are all the same (One can argue one is more free then the other but it's still the same).

That example is different from what we see here.

If that person was begging for spare cards to do X, there was a 50/50 chance that it could be a scam or something legit. Since you did not mention the person not making any giveaways associated with the cause. It falls down more towards a scam on my book. I'm not 100% on par with the example you describe here, but from your words, it very much sounds like a scam.

I've had 2 random people adding me on steam in 2018/2019 or so, both wanting some items i had in my inventory. One of them used the sob story that he was poor and offered me a couple of cards worth a few cents for a bunch of things worth around 6€. I told the person to piss off and blocked him. Had another guy add me (probably the same user, just different account), wanting to trade for almost the same stuff the other user wanted, saying he wanted to gift these items to his little brother, who enjoyed playing TF2. And he was also lowballing me in the trade, not as bad as the first situation but was still bad. Like 2€ worth of random stuff vs 3 times worth of my items.

The person in this thread, is asking for help, on what seems to be an illogical voting contest that could very well be rigged from the roots. While also giving us, the community, something in return. Contents like this are never a good thing, unless the main reason is to gather attention and increase fame or something like that. Since this is a universe contest, from what i read on other comments, then it makes literally no sense for the voting to be public. In-fact, it should be done via judges. Voting can still be rigged if private, all it takes is for the popular person in university to gather the majority of the votes and call it a day.

While there was no reason to believe him or not, it turned out not to be a scam, he provided pictures, the girl has a whole facebook that is still updated, i didn't had cards back then, but i always thought to "make up for it" someday so i kept folllowing it.

But while i am not questioning OP's validity, we can also say: "Oh are they really that poor?" And offcourse millions are suffering an economical crisis. Offcourse i got heart for OP's situation, but there are many more.

People adding you, asking for items, that offcourse just begs scam but that is irrelevant in this case, we are talking about situations through steamgifts.

And offcourse the whole voting thing can be rigged or who has the most friends, even in such a simple there here as the karaoke contest.

What is not different i believe still is the asking part for the reasons mentioned (not to be spammed with people asking for votes or people contesting in the same competition) i believe that's what descriptions in public giveaways are for.
I just said it as a precaution, i am sure eventually a mod will drop along and just say his/her opinion on it, personally i really don't mind eitherway.

Well, i do believe in what you said, but begging doesn't seem acceptable on this website, there are 2 indications towards begging in the guidelines, while none mention cards as an example. The topic was still considered begging in the end, and that was enough to punish the person.

It might sound bad, i know... but the guidelines are there. Perhaps if said person went over with the mods first and made a valid point with his campaign, while showing proof to backup on his campaign not being a scam. Perhaps, there could have been an exception. But even with such exceptions, it usually creates a bad precedent going forward, as people will look at this "campaign", and will attempt to create scams of their own and pester the mods.

It the end, it is understandable why they suspended the person, as hard as it seems to be. This is a gifting site. Not a charity. The moment the mods accept something, anything could come out of that one "exception".

Aside from also each mod having reacted very differently in the past because for a long time there weren't even proper guidelines.
It was not really begging in that sense, he was not saying hey give me your cards, buy me a game, it was more trying a friendly gesture that really backfired, and i believe he did try running it by mods. This might not be the best example but it's what stuck with me, regardless i leave this with this comment.

I think the difference is, that this one would be considered advertising (covered and allowed in the guidelines under "Advertising > Discussions > 4. User Projects"), while your example comes down to begging (they asked for cards ... even if they were for a good cause). As already pointed out, none of the giveaways ask for anything in return so it should be fine.

Was about to comment this, was reading the guidelines.

This advertising is fine, it's not associated with gaming, which isn't mandatory as per guidelines. There is even the example of "renovating your game/theater room", let's say this person wants to renovate the laundry room, hehe.

Cards you can sell for money but technically you get them also for free, and votes are free, you can say for both they are free and therefor there is not a difference. They asked for cards, they asked for a vote.

If you wanna follow that guideline, Isn't advertising user projects only allowed in public giveaways (which i believe this would also be not one problem at all there)?

Someone more knowledgeable will come along and if its okay, fine, if not okay. Was just a precaution, i don't really seek a whole discussion about it really right now.

I understand your POV, guidelines are subject to change, you can even see CG edited 1 year ago or so the guidelines.

I can't really pinpoint 100% if your example was good or not when it comes to guidelines, as they were likely to be different back then (implying it was more than 2 years ago or so). But the best solution was to go along with the mods first, with a support ticket and see a proper solution, if there was any.

Cards can be obtained for free, yes, but at a slow rate. Asking for them, means you bypass this "slow normal rate" of earning them for free. Which could be a problem to consider.

This topic shares some similiarities, but it's not exactly the same situation in the end. People can also advertise their youtube channels and make a living from that if they get decent growth.

I would dare say this topic is mostly on the good side of the guidelines, i'm no mod though, just doing it based on what i read and understand. The one example with the cards, i wouldn't dare go higher than 50/50 on either side, it's a mixed topic that is both good and wrong at the sametime. (i could be wrong though)

Isn't advertising user projects only allowed in public giveaways

The guidelines clearly state advertising is allowed in discussions (just search the guidelines for "Advertising" then look at paragraph 4 under discussions). Also, it's very different asking to participate in a project (that requires voting, but you're not required to vote in order to join any of the associated giveaways) or directly asking for something of value, like cards (you can sell cards for money, so they do have value, even when you initially got them for free). The latter is clearly begging.

Simply put, cards have a monetary value attached, while a vote does not. One is begging, the other is not.
