You don't really need to play the others to understand it, but it does help, and there's some major callbacks which you won't get if you haven't played the first game.
I think it's quite fantastic, but I might just be weird. Skyhooks are entertaining, Vigors are brilliant, story is incredible as per any Bioshock game.
EDIT: Only complaint is how short it is.

Completely new game, you don't have to have played or even know anything about the previous games to fully understand and enjoy infinite
The games are only thematically linked, and there's a bs1 link/reference at the end, but the bulk of the game is its own story.

You don't need to have played the other games to understand the story, it's quite non-linear to the others, but I can assure you you'll play them after playing this one.
The gameplay is strong by itself, it's pretty action-ish, imo, and they've nerfed the gameplay a lot from the other games (when talking about the vigors (plasmids in the others), weapon upgrades (power to the people in the others), and enemies. The combat might get a little repetitive, but then again, it always gets repetitive in any game. The soundtrack is awesome, the graphics are amazing, the story is incredible, the gameplay is fun.
It's worth it. It's worth full price.
But then again, if you ask me, I still like BioShock 1 better. That game is tied in first place with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl and MGS Series for me. Just unbeatable experiences, you'll never forget these games. And Infinite doesn't get far behind.

Thanks guys ;) I bit the bullet, and went for it in the end.
I'll leave the thread open so others can see the sale / coupon.

Good choice. I'm actually playing the game now and it's amazing.
Also I'd like to mention that TotalBiscuit's videos seem good to help decide "should I play this or not?"

Tony is the customer rep for the videogame digital download store on Amazon. He hangs out on CheapAssGamer and Reddit a lot. If I recall correctly he was hanging out on Steamgifts for a while too. He typically gives us a heads up whenever there's a new sale coming.

Yeah I just checked. It's looking pretty good that it will be $9.99 this weekend from Amazon. So if you can wait a couple days you'll save almost a buck and don't need to screw around with GMG's dodgy cart.

So... Infinite is on sale here 66% off, with a 20% coupon: GMG20-7EKXF-UTQXX
I was thinking of getting this after watching a couple of YT videos of it... How much does the story relate to the previous ones? Do I need to have played those to understand it?
What's the game like in general? I know it's supposedly a great game, but how-great-is-'great'?
