Alright, so I'm in college, course is video game design.
Here's the thing.

We were told to think of an idea, a prototype, something new to gaming (a device like the Wii controllers, Kinect, Razer Nabu, etc). After that, we will have to build one. Not a functional one, but a prototype for a presentation. The project is due on Friday.

I was thinking if you guys could help me out getting ideas. My creativity is a bit 'blocked' at the moment when I think of the little time I have to make all of this. Maybe after reading your ideas I will get inspired. My idea was to make it some kind of controller.

Edit: Me and my partner came up with a helmet that's equipped with a UV laser attached to a screen that covers the right eye. The screen is UV sensitive, so you can see where the laser is aiming at. That's gonna be used for aiming within the game. There will be a sensor that's supposedly placed on the tv to "read" the light of the UV laser, and something similar to a Wii remote for the rest of the controls.

Thanks for all the ideas! They did help a lot. :)

Perhaps something that involves some sort of.. 'sexual' activity?

I have an idea so great it could make millions of dollars. So I won't be sharing it with you.

Besides, there is no such thing as a new idea for game control. So many have been done already, just with older technology. Go look at failed controllers of the 90s.

Noo. ;_;
Well, the idea I'm starting to come up with is a cube (and also a Pokemon version that instead of coming with a cube comes with a Pokeball) where you insert your game, a very small object. Then you have a device, like an iPod, transparent, with touchscreen, that changes according to the game and you play on it.

Silly, but, I don't know.

A voice powered controller? Like when u say boom-boom-boom in cod, it fires? It could be useful for handicapped people....

I own the rights of that idea, so if u become a millionaire with it, I will sue u :)

idk.. an upside-down joystick (held with one hand) with a mouse (held by the other hand) secured to the "top" (base of the joystick) that moves the joystick.

sorry if this sounds lame, but it's the best idea i can contribute at the moment

I guess if we're gonna be creative we need to break from the thought that our ideas are lame. They are just different, doesn't mean it's a bad thing. :)

A controller for using with your feet.

That's interesting for handicapped people who lost their arms or can't move them.

This already exists. It would be possible to expand it so someone could actually use a computer just with the feet since the Stinky Board is very limited and only an addition to mouse and keyboard. It could either be with buttons only, but would need a software to make the UI accessable (like gaming console UIs), or it could have a larger tracking ball as mouse replacement. It would be hard to be precise with it so maybe it should have several points to snap in or it could be generally hard to move the tracking ball to make aiming easier.

Just something like a helmet with some cables and you're done

True. But I guess everything would be theory and a lot of "fantasy" would be involved in that while presenting it to the class.
I thought of gloves or even something you could attach to your wrists/fingers, but other people will already use those ideas and I don't wanna be a "copycat".

Thanks for the suggestion.

Edit: You just gave me the idea for a helmet. I might even use that . Double thanks! :D

I don't really understand how you'd be assigned the project in the first place. The course is for video game design, yet you have to create peripherals? Are you sure they weren't referring to a game prototype?

Yes, I am sure. It sounds pretty stupid, it's because it is.
The purpose of the thread wasn't to discuss how fundamental the things we learn are.

I don't understand that either.. Unless they are taught to do such things.. or is a prerequiste (not like it should be.. since it's entirely different)._.

It honestly makes no sense, this is the most useless subject of all, and if we don't do it we are screwed. It's pretty much about how we present our ideas in the end. But it reminds me more of Philosophy than anything else. ._.

I dunno, like I said. It's just stupid. Plain and simple. But I have to live with it for another week.

Just but some accelerometers and gyroscopes into a mouse so u can pick it up and control stuff then we can play mobile game ports that use it. And maybe shake it up or down to change gears in car games or other random novelty uses.

A keyboard on touchscreen! Well, it's not the best idea, but Im pretty sure there are no touchscreen keyboards for PCs and consoles today.

There are no touchscreen keyboard because it's a bad idea, when you play you don't look at the keyboard, but you know where all the buttons are located by touching.

Ok, Grab some wood.........Play with it.......Show splinters to teacher xD

Nah Hmm, Lets see....

Create a Haptic Feedback device for your body, You can use pieces of wood, Straps and elastic bands ( this is as good as your going to get on such short notice)

If that fails, Punch your teacher and just say you just created an idea for a Graphic adventure novel in which a teacher murders his student for some unknown reason ;) and your just setting the scene.

I'd actually like to see a type of keyboard and mouse that works with all types of consoles, or at least with the popular one ( PS and XBox ). And I said that because the controllers are amongst the first reasons why I don't play on/or buy consoles. I can't phadom anything on a controller. I can barely adapt to playing a FPS game on a console after tenths of hours and even then, I'm not good at all in the multiplayer component of the game.

So, if you could come up with something like that, that'll be great. I'm sure that there are others like me, perhaps casual gamers or people who barely have time to play but still do when they get a chance.

I hope that this helped you or gave you a bit of inspiration. I wish you good luck with your project and I'm looking forward to seeing your prototype become reality.

That's indeed true. But if you want something close to a console where you can use a keyboard, get a gaming laptop and a gamepad. You can take it anywhere - to the sofa, to your bed even, doesn't matter - use a controller and the keyboard when you feel like typing.

It's not quite what I am searching for but it's an idea, thanks. :3

I play games on my laptop already, not a gaming laptop though, because they are too expensive for me. I use mine mostly for image editing, magazine design and some other university work. The reason I came up with that idea is because I find console much more accesible in terms of price and continuity ( the last generation of consoles went on for a solid number of years ).

Anyhow, maybe you and your colleagues will try my idea in the future and see if it catches the public's eye.
Good luck !

Good luck with your prototype, it will be tough to come up with something new that can be made as a prototype by Friday. I have some ideas that I am saving for my computer engineering design course that might take a while. Here is one that is a little easier but maybe not that great of an idea...

Basically a mouse that is upright, so you can grip it like the wii nunchuck. There would be a trigger in place of the right click, scrolling with the mouse as well as a little control pad. The other fingers could have access to some buttons they could be bound to.

Smell, wind, rumble. Sensations from the game, to the reality.

Think about it ;)

That's a great idea, but there are cases where the smelling could be avoidable (in case of sewers, etc xD)
The best thing would be Virtual Reality where you 'dive' into the game. :)

Camera on monitor/TV that senses movement of eyeballs. After calibration, you can check which part of screen user is looking. Blink her/his left eye = LMB, right = RMB.

I have an idea. It's something like touchscreen just you don't need to "touch" anything. There is like ten lasers that people can't see and on opposite side there is a "thing" that catches those laser beams. Your hand is between laser beams and a "thing" and you could zoom in, zoom out, go to next page with your bare hand. That would be better than the mouse...
