Given that "Giveaway creators are allowed one week to send the gift after their giveaway has ended" (from FAQ), I recommend a more distinct icon/indicator other than a flashing indicator because it lacks visual context that allows for:

  • Users to better understand the difference between a win that can be redeemed vs unredeemable wins. Not only is this beneficial for noobs, but is also a matter of accessibility per Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Greater browser compatibility (indirectly)

So I propose modifying the tool tip of the Giveaways Won to indicate that there is an unredeemed key - Using color differentiation, tooltip, and/or different shape, etc.

The current state of the indicator is that the icon's upper right red label counting the number of wins blinks, with no change to the tooltip of "Giveaways Won", and the HTML tags don't provide context either: div class="nav__notification fade_infinite"

EDIT: Revised suggestion based on current state of a blinky icon when key redemption is available.

Do you think it would be useful to have a different looking Giveaways Won indicator when one or more un-redeemed key exists?

It blinks when there is a key...

Ok, I have modified my OP to suggest an IMPROVED indicator primarily for the sake of accessibility & greater understanding context. At minimum, when the icon behaves differently to convey specific information, there should also be a tooltip/alt-text that provides context for the indicator/behavior.

When the key arrives for me the icon starts flashing but it certainly isn't the biggest indicator that its been sent to you if you aren't that aware of everything going on

Thanks, I'll look for that when one of my wins becomes redeemable.

I think it's good just how it is, I never had any problems seeing that a key (or giftlink) got delivered. ;)

It was so subtle to me that I didn't know the difference for 2+ months until I made this post.
So if I didn't notice it, imagine how many SG noobs don't know it either ;)
I edited my OP with a recommendation to change the tool tip text and/or color for usability sake.

I'd rather change the notification color to green when the key is ready.

Red = won but key not ready
Green = win and key is now ready

I just got done editing my recommendation based on my own review of the flashing indicator I just got for my own win.
I am in favor of a different colored indicator as well - Good idea. At minimum for accessibility sake, I propose modifying the tooltip/alt-text.

As I brought up when it was first introduced, I have trouble noticing when the alert starts flashing; A different color would definitely be a preferable notification method. While the present utilization may in a sense warrant it, flashing elements should generally be avoided in site design to begin with. If an alternative with comparable functionality could be introduced, it should by default be a superior option.

Naturally, adding a customization option [ie, to select between flashing or a color code] to the user settings would be an even more preferable approach.

Sorry, but I do not understand. The flashing indicator is a visual indicator that differentiates between a win that can be redeemed, flashing, vs one that can not, not flashing. Motion is a very effective attention grabber. To me at least, it is much more effective attention grabber than a minor change to its shape, unless you are talking about it taking up half the screen, or its colour, and definitely much more effective than changing the tooltip that I doubt anyone reads, and besides at that point you could just click it and see for yourself.

If you really want a noob friendly indicator, why not ask to have the site automatically redirect you to the redemption page if you have an unredeemed key. Though this should be a one time redirect in case the key turns out to be faulty, if you were unable to mark it as not received you'd be continuously redirected. Another option would be to have a new notification pop up like the space cat announcing your key has arrived. If the email notification is only sent when you have won and not when you received the key, then ask for it to be changed or to add another option for an email to be sent when the key is. Otherwise you have a very powerful indicator available already.

I think it's perfectly fine the way it is.

If you don't notice a flashing indicator within seven days ... well, I'm not sure what to tell you.
