Hi all,
I just want to know if anyone thinks it is a good idea to give users the option to receive the giveaways they win through a Private Message (here on Steamgifts), instead of (or in addition) to the email.
This would be usefull if you don't want to show your email to the giveaway creators OR if the giveaway creators do not want to use their emails to send the keys-games (in short: keep your email private and use a PM).
I think it would be a good idea to have this option for those that do not want to show their email (or create another email account).

By the way, i asked support and they told me to do this poll and if people consider this a good idea they could implement it.

Thank you and let's see what do you think about it :) .

Private message instead of email?

Private Message.

Both (let people choose if they want to receive the game-key-link on email or through PM).

Of course you can comment why you choose one of the options (or why you don't like the other), and if you have chosen "both" you can tell what would you choose if you could.

I voted "Both" and i would choose PM myself and keep my email "hidden" :P .

But how would that work with gifts ? Don't you need a mail address to send them to ?
Anyway, I made a mail address that I use for Steamgifts only so I don't really care

I've had the same email since 1997, so I've already been on every spam list known to man, beast, and cg. But I'd really rather there wasn't a PM function on SG. It seems like that would just add to the sites traffic while enabling beggers and spammers.

PM makes more sense.

  • If a give-away creator was able to contact a user via PM, then the user could receive an email of the notification from a single ...@steamgifts.com address - which they could then whitelist.

  • I usually guard my personal address fiercely. With many people seemingly taking advantage of public giveaways in order to promote other agendas (blogs / youtube channels etc.) it wouldn't surprise me if anyone started using SG to to harvest emails. I don't particularly want unsolicited mail... Though as far as data protection is concerned I'm not sure if this point is valid as the SG privacy policy is somewhat dubious:

This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or providing information to you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. 1. If you send a key it should be displayed to the winner
  2. If you send a gift link there is a link displayed instead of the key
  3. If you send a gift on steam you can add the winner and send it to him directly

Neither of this options requires email address thus it shouldn't be visible for giveaway creators.

I think a private message through steamgifts has always been the better option. Mostly because it limits the potential mistakes. Mistakes like sending it to the wrong address or having a user forget to check their e-mail or having a user forget to leave feedback after activating the key.

I have been thinking that maybe the Steam profile could be "hidden" too, so only the winner and the creator of the giveaway would know the Steam profile of each other; this way the winner could avoid "private level 0 steam profiles friend requests" to ask for the game or even worse and the creator would not receive "private level 0 steam profiles friend requests" asking for free games or more giveaways.
So your only public data of Steamgifts would be your Steamgifts name; and even if it is the same that your Steam community name, it would be harder to be sure as probably there are several users with the same name.

This plus the PM system would make a "safer" site and overall a better experience (i think).

What do you think? (you can create a new thead if you want to make a poll or something).

This wouldn't work. Because of Steam Trade you have to directly access the buyer/seller profile on clicking on this website. With all people trying to impersonate other's profile it would be too much of a pain. Plus i don't imagine the shitstorm this will create with people trading with a fake profile coz he couldn't access it on a simple click.

But when you win a giveaway, you and the creator could see the steam profile of each other and access it from here to do the trade-gift. It will be shown only if needed, like it does now with the email.
And of course it should be optional, for those who want.
Hope i explained it well.

Yes i know what you mean, it could work on Steamgift but not on Steamtrade. Since they're the same website i guess it would be too much to make this change especially since this version is pretty new.

Otherwise i'm for the message thing within the website :D

Oh, i see, i am pretty new here :P .
Do the staff usually post on forums?, maybe they could tell us if that could be posible to do.

Sorry for double post, but i have been thinking if there were a way to do this and i think it could be done this way: if you are going to use Steamtrades you should set this option to public (otherwise you would be ignored there probably), and if you are ONLY going to use Steamgifts then you can set it to private-hidden and show it only to the winner of the giveaway or to the creator.

Anyway, this could be in addition to the PM system (that i think is more important). Hope they consider doing it (or both things if they find them useful and they can do this change to the web; unless it is too difficult to do, like you said it could be).

Just as a "recap" so maybe the Steamgifts staff can check it (and do something about this :P ):
By now we have 215 votes, 31 of them just want email and the rest 184 want to be able to choose any of the 2 options.
I think it is a good amount of people who would be interested on having the option to hide their emails (maybe a lot of them won't do it, but at least they would not mind having it, in case they ever want to).

Also it could be interesting to "study" (as a secondary, and maybe personal, request :P ) the option to hide the Steam profile and only show it to the winner and creator (only useful if you just use steamgifts, not steamtrade); so, i think that this in addition to that PM system, could create a pretty safe place and overall a better experience (the more options the better, rigth?) .

Of course you can keep commenting and voting, if anyone didn't do it yet ;) .
