Well, when CSS was introduced, players also complained that by fixing many of the movement bugs and level geometry, the game became more casual as the edge given by learning all the high-level tricks was mitigated. Every time a new competitive shooter tries to take the scene, it is accused of opening up to the plebs instead of the high-level players. Ironically, this is why Quake Live is still big enough to host tournaments even today: you cannot really go much further back than Quake (Doom 1 MP, AFAIK, was pretty barebones and clunky, even after the old updates).

Or more like Half Life 3D. With a fully immersive world with additional support for VR. It would be really bad ass if some one combined HL3 P3 and maybe even L4D3 together in one big badass world which brings shame to the worlds developed in Uncharted 3 and Halo. All of this would work with Linux as well. Damn such a future would be awesome and totally worth the wait.

You have a point here, but I'm pretty sure that exactly the reputation is making them work that much on their games. As announced recently by Forbes, Gabe have enough money that he can retire and live forever and one day without working again. Also Valve, their relatives and a few poor countries. They don't need to prove they are good, but to keep that standard high. I was sure Source 2 engine was not created for Dota or CS only (now confirmed by Gabe). They know VR is not there yet, for a prettiest game, but what they will show off in 2017 will certainly be superior to any VR experience made by others. As Greg Coomer, Valve's Product Designer said at last year's Steam Dev Days: Although we're not going to treat Dev Days this year as the place or time to make big product announcements related to the content that has been in development at Valve in virtual reality, I do think that when it comes time to do that next year, that nobody in this room is going to be disappointed about what we have in the works..." Being disappointed by the lack of single player games, but also at the same time I admire them for creating their own tech to push gaming experience further. Only hope Gabe keeps his word and when they announce something, it will be playable in short time.
And there are better things to do for everyone, other than stalking Valve for new stuff. :)

There will not be a half life 3, Valve will skip straight to 4.

I confirmed this by independently thinking about it.

To me it seems like they have been working on a new IP all this time, it wouldn't surprise me if they release a new game in some years set in the same universe from Half-Life/Portal but with a completely different protagonist, story and mechanics.
About the plot of H-L, they'll probably just release a movie at some point and solve the story there.

Browsing all the giveaways, I noticed almost all VR games are cheap and short. Makes sense why Valve is developing for so long, they wanna offer the full experience: Source 2 engine, VR + normal version, plus a hefty campaign story. I guess it applies to their other titles as well, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, etc. Plus it will be fully compatible with the SteamOS console, controller, etc. It's still a long time for all this though, but it will blow us away for sure
