Hello everyone! Remember this thread from a couple months ago, when a few of us here on SteamGifts were trying to push for Consortium: The Tower on Kickstarter? Well, now Interdimensional Games (iDGi) are trying again on Fig, so I'm making a new thread, too! So, without further ado...

(In case you're wondering, I'm a backer, not a developer!)

Consortium: The Tower

WOO, 115% FUNDED! $345,015 of the $300,000 goal, so let's not stop now! $350,000 is the first stretch goal, so let's go for it! There's been a lot of momentum in these final hours, so keep it up!

Here, have some discount codes for $10 off any pledge of $50 or more! Code One Code Two Code Three

Celebration Twitch stream on Wednesday at 9 PM EDT (6PM PDT) when the campaign ends. You can watch archives of their previous streams on Twitch or YouTube.

Link to the reddit AMA with Interdimensional Games CEO Greg MacMartin and BioWare co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk!

Consortium Game One is $2.99 on the Humble Store for the next nine days! Pick it up!

Alright, what is it?

Consortium: The Tower is the sequel to the 2014 game Consortium, picking up where the first one left off. There's a hostage situation going on in a skyscraper in the middle of London, England, and it's up to you to resolve the situation in whatever way you see fit.

Why should I care?

This video should probably do the trick in showing you basically everything you need to know.

The Consortium games are immersive sims—that is, games that concentrate on creating a believable game world for you to explore and interact with. It's not about killing waves of enemies, or progressing through corridors until you hit the end point, then go to the next level. You can go where you want, how you want, and do what you want, and then deal with the repercussions of your actions.

What the heck is Fig?

Fig is a crowdfunding platform, just like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Like Kickstarter, no money is collected until the campaign ends, and only if the campaign raises enough funds. Unlike either of its competitors, though, Fig offers investment backing, which means you can earn some money based off of the sale of a game you invest in on Fig. (Rewards backing and investment backing are two different things on Fig, so backing for rewards won't get you money.) In addition, Fig takes no money from rewards backers, meaning that only transaction fees are deducted from funds raised from rewards backers.

I still don't care, I just want free games!

NEW GIVEAWAYS ENDING 2016-05-11!

My new train! - STILL GOING!
Tynon's new train! OVER!

Old giveaways:

...Very well. Here's a giveaway for the first Consortium (ended), and then there's also a train for various other games. EDIT: first round is over, but there will be more! Missed the giveaway and the discount for Consortium Game One? You can still pick the game up on Steam, the Humble Store (includes a Steam key and a DRM-free download), GOG.com (DRM-free), and Bundle Stars (Steam key).

In case you're interested, here's a link to the developer's forums. There's also a Discord server, linked to from the forum!

Edit

Some additional gifts from MosquitoSenorito: Giveaway one and Giveaway two Ended!

NEW UPDATE FROM DEVS: More details about the stealth system! Also, if for some reason you really, really dislike Fig (I've heard people talking poorly about it, but never specifying why...), you can now contribute via PayPal. Note that the devs will receive more of your money if you contribute as a rewards backer through Fig than if you go through PayPal, because Fig doesn't take a cut of rewards backers funds, while PayPal does take a cut!

Update from Devs 2016-05-04:
Have a copy of Consortium Game One already? There's a contest to see who can get the highest score on the new Virtual Trainer map, with the winner getting a poster for Consortium: The Tower signed by the dev team! Also, there's a poll on the forums regarding what game Greg MacMartin, iDGi CEO and creative director, should play on his Twitch stream on 2016-05-06. Vote while you can, as the poll ends 2016-05-05 at 8:45 PM EDT!

Good for them, I haven't been able to convince myself to get into the original, was all about it when I bought it, but there was a compatibility issue with my graphics card for like 6 months, and by the time it worked, I just didn't care anymore lol Maybe someday I'll revisit it.

It's fine, don't worry about it.

So, what do you think of Killing Floor 2? I haven't played it in a few months, and while it certainly is an improvement in terms of graphics (and not having to deal with some of the engine quirks of Unreal Engine 2.5 is nice), I found the gameplay to be not quite as satisfying as it was in the first game. (Although to be fair, I'm absolutely spoiled by having been exposed to a group of modded servers that add 30 perks or so, dozens of new enemies, weapons, hundreds of enemies spawned at once, etc.)

Yeah, kind of like the same situation here. It's not as funny as the first one, I mean, the voice over sounds kind of bland in some characters (A priest? Killing zombies while saying he can't stand the blood around? The hell? Maybe if he had a funnier voice over, then I'd go with it, but... nah...), but at least the levelling up is faster than in the first game (Last Field Medic level, you require a million points of healing done to other teammates... On level 5 you require 250k, go figure!).

And... what? Modded servers? 30 perks? Where do I find these?

Also, bear in mind that the game is still in Early Access, so it might take a while to find the right balance with classes and stuff around, they might add new weapons once you reach a threshold or something, I have no idea...

Another thing is that, at least Tripwire is being generous on giving away free content to the community, instead of dozens of DLC's (Like Payday 2, holy crap, that MANY DLC's!)

So, in a fewer words, the game can improve, but for now, I'm a bit disappointed with the progress so far, hopefully, it might go better.

Every time I play the second one, I miss the absurd humor of the first one. Even the terrible sexual innuendos of the trader would be nice to have in KF2.

About those modded servers, here you go. You will die. A lot. It probably won't be very fun at first, can be a bit of a grind. But getting ridiculously OP is fun, too! Also, unlike standard KF, these servers actually get easier with more people on (more enemies spawn, but more people = easier to handle all of the enemies, allows people to pick perks that are good at managing groups but not large enemies, large enemies but not groups, etc.), so if you find things aren't going well for you, try again some other time. Usually later in the evening EST/EDT you'll see more people on, so try then!

I used to love Overkill. Payday: The Heist was (and still is!) a great game, and the DLC for it was handled decently well. One DLC gave you access to a new skill tree (with associated new guns and tools, none of which were 100% necessary to be successful) and two new maps. If you invited your friends, only the host needed to have the DLC to play the maps.

Then Payday 2 happened. It started out looking pretty cool. I, uncharacteristically and unfortunately, bought into the hype and preordered the special edition, which was supposed to give you some bonus goodies: "Bain's Guide to the Criminal Underworld", in-game discounts ("We've made it clear that PAYDAY 2 will have no micro-transactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!)"), the soundtrack (Simon Viklund is amazing. Considering he only did the soundtrack and voice acting and wasn't involved in gameplay/business decisions, I hold no ill will towards the man, and would definitely consider buying more of his music.), printable heist blueprints, and beta access.

So the beta comes, and it's great! Great music, great stealth, great mechanics, I LOVE THIS.

Then release happened. Still in love. Kind of. Well, Bain's Guide was...kind of just a fancy manual with some hints to an ARG or something, but that didn't matter because that was made available all over the place. It was even a Steam Guide for a while there, though I can't seem to find it anymore. Oh, and the discount didn't work, and by the time it did work, it turns out it really wasn't all that useful. But hey, I got the blueprints! Which I completely forgot were even supposed to be included. Did they do that? I don't know. So hey, $20 extra over standard edition got me beta access and the soundtrack, not bad...oh, hey, soundtrack was made available for $5 right at launch. So $15 for beta access. What a terrible, terrible deal. First stage of regret.

Then they tweaked income. Things weren't so smooth now. Then they broke stealth a bit. Okay. Then they made guards respawning. NOT OKAY. Completely pointless to stealth anymore, Ghost builds (my focus) were meaningless. Oh, hey, I heard you like DLC. So now there's 30 pay-for DLC for Payday 2, for a total of $131.70. Alright, one of them's a Christmas soundtrack for $0.99, so make that 29 DLC for $130.71. (There's also a GOTY edition that doesn't include all of the DLC. GOTY + rest of DLC = $137.83.) Then they put basic stuff like grenades into DLC. And made a critical part of weapon modding DLC. Oh, and remember when they said, "No. No, God, I hope not. Ever. No." in response to if they'd add microtransactions? Well, we all know how that one ended up.

That said, I have a good bit more faith in Tripwire than Overkill. I mean, they're also responsible for the Red Orchestra/Rising Storm games, and I love those a ton. That said, I do regret preordering Killing Floor 2 at this point. While their handling of microtransactions is much better than Overkill's, the game just...doesn't feel right. At least, last I played.

I've read everything you have said, I appreciate you had the time to read what I wrote as well, and for taking the time to write this up for me to explain the situation, but, like every Payday 2 player (604 hours on it, woah!), it's the same story.

Thanks for giving me the link for that KF modded server, are there KF2 modded servers too? I might try it whenever I have some time! (I'm an achievement enthusiast, so I might have a bit of time trying to do stuff on KF2 first :) )

Payday: The Heist was more generous in what they were giving away, one DLC, a decent one indeed, too bad Payday 2 when for the "horse armor" easy way, giving away the main stuff (small stuff, perhaps) + some crap that no one needs (mods for low tiered weapons, as an example)

Still as of now, having the DLC while the others didn't allows the others to play with you if they don't have it in Payday 2, I have to admit that's nice, but it really doesn't overshadow what they have done already to the community.

I never... NEVER pre-order stuff, even if it looks amazing (even too amazing to be true), because this is what might happen... Later, either the game goes to the shitter, or the developer... Just... goes away! Like what happened to "Towns".

You should probably not do this, until you have other reviews from other players (unfortunately, this will not prevent the game to have a wrong turn later...)

Almir Listo has all the fault in all of this... How, on Crimefest, as the first reward for the community, which is supposed to be free stuff, you reward...

...

Safes? That can only be opened by using money? Maybe Almir wanted the community to... I don't know, get rich somehow... But those safes will eventually devalue to oblivion because of Supply vs Demand.

I wouldn't do this myself, I don't even know what propelled this guy to do what he did... Support for the tripled (!!!) dev team? (Why is it even tripled anyways? Are they working on the safe-house update (!!!!!!) now or something, or making some crappy DLC's [Thomas, what do you have for a new DLC? Oh, Almir, we can add a super ultra mega stupid weapon that nobody will use, while we release more mods that nobody will use! But... wait... there's more... ANOTHER SAFE! Good fucking idea, Thomas! Greenlit!]) Nah... I don't see the need to triple the dev team just to see the cash go away in unnecessary goods for my game and myself...

Starbreeze Finantial Report after Crimefest

TL;DR: "With an un-broken sequence of five quarters in a row Starbreeze continues to build a solid track
record of profitable growth with one single franchise, PAYDAY."

During Starbreeze second and final quarter of the shortened financial year 2015, the group generated net sales of 48.9 MSEK an increase by 3 per cent compared to Q2 last year. Our bestselling franchise, PAYDAY 2, continues to deliver
exceptional growth.

WTF? They increased almost nothing with that crap update! And that's from sales only!

Talking about something else, that ARG thing?... It's not even existent as of now... Probably another DLC map that they need to do to do some half-assed ARG, to please the die hard fans, knowing them...

Probably you were looking for this?

Simon Viklund? Amazing music he makes, at least he is not working with them anymore, he is just some sort of advisor, or something, I don't know... I'm not very well in those matters since I left Payday 2 for a while.

I've been hearing things are getting nerfed, making them useless now for end-game strategy or stuff that doesn't need it or are useless gets buffed or something... I'm just speculating here, but I wouldn't be surprised if everything turns out to be true.

You said right there... $130 dollars for a game... WOAH!

Even The Witcher: Wild Hunt's DLC... ONE SINGLE DLC, has more content that all that crap that has spewed OVERKILL...

I have to admit it... I have bought some DLC's at full price... What a dumbfuck I was... Yes, I called myself that... All of those DLC's are pretty much given away at 80% discount as of now (except newer ones), so I should have waited... :/

And about Tripwire, I agree... They are still in Early Access, hopefully things might change... Right?

...

Right?... :/

It wasn't a guide for the ARG that may or may not exist, but a literal upload of every single page of Bain's Guide.

I hope Tripwire makes KF2 funny. I hope they realize what a horrible mistake they've made by trying to play it mostly straight. Humor is what helped make KF1 absurd. Also, they really need to rethink Scrake and Fleshpound balance...

As for KF2 mods, I don't much about the status of KF2 modding. Last I heard, they were going to wait until launch to allow perk modding, or something like that. I honestly don't know.

Neither the Steam giveaway nor the GOG giveaway (that one should be obvious) allowed you to get Steam keys/gifts, only redeem on your own account, so it's a non-problem for allowing people to do giveaways here.

Also, please give the first game another chance! If you encounter any technical issues, post about them on the developer's forums and they should address them.

Oh I missed this thread when it first came up!

That's great that the new Consortium already got backed so quickly, this would make an interesting case study on why it failed the first time around but was quickly successful this time around for game devs and publishers.

Consortium is one of the more interesting first-person adventures I've seen with emphasis on npc interaction instead of on combat, logic puzzles, or just simple exploration. To me, this is an important branch of the genre and one that I think needs a lot more love and attention. I hope this new Consortium knocks it out of the part critically and financially and gets others interested in this avenue of game development.

Part of it was definitely momentum. Everyone who backed the Kickstarter for Consortium: The Tower got to be a "super backer" on Fig, so they got a discount, all Kickstarter rewards (if Kickstarter tier offered a reward that the Fig tier doesn't have, or a Kickstarter tier that the Fig campaign doesn't have), and free digital copies of all Consortium games. So you have the initial surge of quite a few former backers from the previous month long campaign joining the new campaign, combined with new funding from investors (notably including one of BioWare's co-founders), gave the campaign a good start.

It seemed like there was more press attention about the new Fig campaign, too. Certainly helped with the name-drop and interviews of the BioWare co-founder.

Interesting, I appreciate the follow up and your thoughts. Media/press connections and big name networking certainly seems to be an important avenue of marketing and I'm glad that the developers (Interdimensional Games) have the tenacity to continue seeking funding and promotion despite not hitting their original Kickstarter goal. That to me speaks volumes on the type of business they are running and that they are not going to just give up when the going gets tough. I also had a quick look at the Interdimensional Games corporate website and their company philosophies and game design goals sound very aligned to my own -- I might have a new favorite indie development studio! :)

This isn't the first time that iDGi has had a failed Kickstarter. Their first attempt to crowdfund Consortium Game One was heading to certain failure, managing to collect less than $10,000 of the $200,000 goal in 18 days, so they shut that down. They waited three months before making another go at it, this time with a smaller target ($70,000), and made it.

What went wrong the first time they went to crowdfund Consortium Game One? First off, they didn't announce anything beforehand, so nobody knew anything about the game until the Kickstarter had already launched. No hype, no marketing. Here's a new developer asking for $200,000 out of the blue. Not off to a good start. Secondly, they chose to launch the campaign December 1st, and try to crowdfund right in the center of the holiday season. What a very, very bad idea that was.

(I totally stole those points from the devs themselves..)

YES. FUCK YES. I wasn't even aware of another campaign after the kickstarter one. Believe it or not, this is the only game that would make me upgrade my PC specs if I can't run it. Fallout, Witcher, PoE and many others couldn't do that.

Really happy to see that it is funded. I finished the first one 3 times. From the gameplay videos I thought that they changed the art style, but from the screenshots I see that they didn't, which is nice since it is quite unique with the simple flat textures and low poly geometry.
I wonder if R25 will complain everytime you shoot someone.
