Anything by Neal Stephenson especially Anathem.

Not the greatest author, but Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz is great. The sequels, not so much, but the original is great.

Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Not fantasy; not science-fiction; but an excellent book. I like fantasy and sci-fi, but it's good to try something a little different sometimes.

I'd recommend (though it's not fantasy or sci-fi) a personal favorite of mine, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold..."

Dmitri Gluhovski - Metro 2033 and Metro 2034, he is currently even writing a Metro 2035. Big fan of em :3 I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, intense combat and mystery. 2034 has even got a little bit of bitter love, but if you get to that, you will understand that i am just writing this to get your attention to read it :p

Divergent/Insurgent and The Secret Texts series by Holly Lisle is what I'd recomend you. For your niece maybe Alice in Wonderland/Trough the Looking Glass, Holes, The Hobbit and The Giver (also some you might enjoy)?

Well well well, I'm a huge fan of reading, so here goes my recommendations:
I have many more, but it's up to you. ;)

I thought I responded to this before. Apparently, not.
Christopher Pike's Starlight Crystal. It's a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Philsophical piece. It's amazing. I read it as a kid and had to re-read it. <3
I second The Hunger Games (although stop at the second book), don't second the Fire & Ice (that's a bit adult for your niece, if you're looking for something to read together), and suggest Stephen Lawhead. For both of you. He's a great fantasy author and his books are a bit long (not very young-adult, but aren't overly sexual/romantically driven), but are absolutely amazing and very heavily influenced on existing fantasy/legend. He's basically done a revamp of Robin Hood (King Raven trilogy), King Arthur (Pendragon Cycle) and, one of my favorites, is the Songs of Albion series. <3 There were more, but I forgot them. -.-

If you don't mind a bit of urban fantasy mixed with romance, the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is wonderful. Her other books are good as well, but those are definitely my favorites.
Margaret Weis is also a great author for fantasy, the Dragonlance books are indeed good, but also her other books are great as well.
Not as sure for your niece, since it does depend on her age, but even now I still read books by Lurlene McDaniel who is a young adult writer, but those are more written for teens, though even adults can enjoy the books as well.

Instead of specific books, here's amazing fantasy/scifi authors - Piers Anthony (the xanth series is amazing light-hearted fantasy, my favorite series), Anne McCaffrey (the pern series is half fantasy half scifi and is pretty damn amazing), Terry Brooks (the shannara series is SUPER epic but a bit slow), Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman (they have some separate serieses, but the Dragonlance series is what you want here - D&D inspired fantasy to die for).

I've been mindbogglingly bored for the last couple months or so. I haven't had much drive to play games, and I've read every book, manga, and comic that I own.
Whenever I go shopping for new books, I tend to ask various other customers what they like so I can get an idea of what new books/series to try since, in my opinion, that's one of the best ways to expand your library. Sometimes I'll come across a movie that I enjoy and look to see if it was based on a book. A book I ordered a couple days ago, for example, is one that I looked into simply because my niece showed me a cartoon that was based from it that I very much enjoyed.
So here I am peeps, tell me, what's something I should read? I typically stay in the Fantasy Genre, but I do enjoy straying into Science Fiction and Mystery from time to time.
EDIT:
If it's not too much trouble, could I also get some recommendations for some good young readers books? My niece loves reading but I'm afraid I have very little age appropriate material.
