I just received this email from steam support:

"This is an automated message generated by Steam account administration. It is being sent in response to a query made by a Steam user to discover all account names associated with this CD-key.

Steam account name: mine obviously

If you requested this query, please use the above account name to log in to Steam. If you cannot remember your password, click on the “Retrieve lost account” button on the Steam login screen.

If you did not request this query, please ignore this message – users cannot gain access to your account via the Find Account By CD Key process without access to your email account."

Can you actually look up accounts by a CD key that was used on the account and should I be scared of this?

PS I use email certificates and the mobile guard

Steam sends you an email but the person trying to activate the key doesn't get any of your info whatsoever

You can't look up accounts by a specific game key. You can request the e-mail that you received, but the person who requested it has no idea where it was sent to or what the account was.

I've gotten a few before and wondered who was messing around with keys I had redeemed and why. But they don't know who you are and there isn't anything else they can do. It's nothing to worry about.

Someone used a key that you used and try to recover it... but without evidences of the purchase its not possible i think, so... you are safe

Nah, the person who requests it won't know who owns the key, the owner just gets an e-mail.

Like everyone says nothing to worry about I have had some of those as well.

In the end if you have Steamguard active and if you have a secure email account no one can access your account when trying to recover a Steam key.

You shouldn't worry about that, it has happen to me once or twice before, though i very rarely get unused keys from the forum, which makes me question where have they come across the same key

I am in the same situation. The only thing I can think is winning a multiple game GA and the creator sent the same key on accident to both me and the other winner

Its not the only possibility
I'm not very good at keeping track of my used keys outside SG or my own steam account, and end up with some keys that may or may not have been sent to a friend, more often then not i just dump them on the "orphan keys" thread
Other people might have done the same, either dropping them on the forum or to a friend of theirs, the option is so visible someone might even click on it out of curiosity

i hope this adds more weight to the argument for being able to gift "free" keys purchased in bundles to one and only one user, but done in such a way that bots can't grab and use free ones, basically 0p cv, 0 rep, ga's ; or simply a mechanism to direct gift to RNG[1 user that wishlisted]; Else RNG[1 random user that doesn't have the game but doesn't particularly care about it]

That happens when you click on the "Recover key" or something like that when it shows up as a duplicate. It has no repercussions whatsoever, as far as I'm aware.

What it does is:

  1. Identify the account holder of the account the CD-key was used on
  2. Send an e-mail to the e-mail associated with that account (in this case: your own) with the following information: Account name

Purpose: In the case you forgot your account name, you could request it to be sent to you by providing a CD-key from a game you redeemed on that account in the past. (In other words, if you forgot which account you redeemed the key on, this is the solution.)
Since others don't have access to your e-mail, they won't obtain any information either.
This works similarly to the usual 'Forgot your username?' options known from other services.
