I know I must have made this a while back but I can't remember, So I'll ask again now.

Since I just picked up Ys VIII on the sale, and am loving it, I wanted to know some of your favorite RPG games you have played.I don't care when it was released or what platform it's on nor if it's a remake. I'm going to count souls games too because to me, they count.

Some of mine are -
Wild Arms
Skies of Arcadia - BOTH versions
Y's Origin
Dark Souls 3
Final Fantasy 6
Wizardry 8
Might and Magic (the REAL ones) 3
Skyrim

That's all I can think of right now as I need to go to work.

So what are some of yours?

Golden Sun

Xenoblade games are up there 2(I need to finish up 1s remaster, I am near the end but did hit a point I need to grind some and didn't want to so its been paused for a long time... 2 was far better to me at least, also has a Welsh cat girl to improve it greatly.

have 3 sitting to be played... and another remaster/port coming soon to the switch(the definitive console to have for xenoblade games).

Mine are very much old school. RPGs have been one of my faves for ages (eye of the beholder is the first game I ever played on an IBM PC) so these are really just the tip of the iceberg really.

Planescape Torment (imo the ultimate western rpg, at least text based, one of the few games where I've really and truly felt emotional along the way and upon reaching the end; I wish I could play this game again for the first time)

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (epic story, legendary characters, the epitome of isometric DnD)

Icewind Dale 1 & 2 (often underrated games, mostly dungeon crawlers but beautiful art & music lift them up substantially)

Fallout series (have always been torn between 1 & 2, first is more serious and sleek, second can have often jarring moments of levity/4th wall breaking but it's so expansive and the roleplaying options are so much greater; 3 is fine, it proved the game can be good in fpv but I would argue that alot of what makes it good actually comes from it's predecessors rather than anything Bethesda's brought to the table. Have only played half of NV on console but even that showed me what was capable when a quality rpg maker is involved)

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 (1st game is really a glorified sandbox with some generic questing, lifted enormously by its two expansions; 2 was a hot buggy mess for a long time but had a better campaign experience out of the box by far and an awesome first expansion)

Elder Scrolls series (loved it since Arena but for me Morrowind is it's high point so far, the world crafting is just amazing and so unlike nearly every other rpg and - controversial opinion - was the last one before the game mechanics became streamlined for more casual players; full disclosure though I've only played about 1/4 of Skyrim on console but it seems to hit alot of those TES3 notes)

KotOR 1 & 2 (at a time when the prequels left me feeling somewhat empty, these 2 games came along to show how SW storytelling could really be done. For me 2 is the high point of character & theme development, albeit in a bug filled package. RCM mod is a must)

Witcher games (when you're committed to being mature in themes as well as content you end up with really special games)

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (a bug filled nightmare at launch, fan patches have revealed it as the true rpg diamond it is)

Gothic series (for a long time overshadowed by Elder scrolls, unfairly in the case of gothic 2)

Might & Magic games (were entering dinosaur territory now 😄 but time can't change how great some of these are)(honourable mentions for some ultima games, esp Black gate)

Most Gold/Silver box DnD games (love especially Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2)

Depending how flexible your definition of rpg is then add Deus Ex ( a true masterpiece of choice & consequences) and System Shock 2 (the game may be linear but the flexibility of getting to the end point and the atmosphere make it an all time great)

Top of my mind always, somewhat in order
Fallout 2
Arcanum
Fallout New Vegas
Fallout 1

Those hold a very special place for me so they come up on top, but theres way more that i consider as good or probably as good in no order

Witchers ( i liked all of them, but they got better with each title)
Disco Elysium
Arx Fatalis
Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2
Kingdoms of Amalur (less so as an rpg, more for the action/fun)

Baldurs Gate 2 and Icewind dale(havent played baldurs 3, seem amazing), but despite me loving ttrpgs and fantasy so much i liked fallouts and Arcanum so much more they come second for me.

Drakensang '2' The River of Time (and partially Drakensang 1)- a more cautious sugestion. Its dated, a more cumbersomme and arcane ruleset (adapted 1:1 from a more dense and oldschool ttrpg) and knocked out of the park on a thecnical level by all the famous ones... still it managed to do something i feel not even Baldurs Gates did- it was the closest i ever felt a game 'felt like a tabletop rpg campaign'. The D&D games get close but they always have something more grandeur in scope or plot like a special adventure- the kind of thing in ttrpg most gms only do/reach mid to late game, sometimes years into the same game with the same group... Drakensang feels like early game ttrpgs, and the kind of plots and challenges that feel very very much like the common fare in pnp rpgs.... But again, cautious recomendation, its dated, flawed etc.. but vibes and feeling oldschool? Lovely

My favorite of all time is Planescape Torment. It's an experience, not a game.
