I'm looking to buy a new gaming headset ideally with surround sound and a decent mic around the $100 range give or take.
Any suggestions?

Turtle beach makes amazing headsets.
Would recommend the PX22.

Like other people have said you should consider buying mic and headphone separately. The reason why is that the headset has a higher chance of one thing failing since they are usually lower quality compared to their single component counterparts. Usually it's a wiring issue since they put both the mic and headphone within the small earcup, so there's some chance of it getting crossed. If the mic or headphone stops working, your headset becomes kind of useless whereas if separate you can simply just replace the broken piece.

I would recommend Sennheiser since they have pretty good quality headphones. I would invest more on a quality headphone, since mics can be bought cheap and they would still be better than headset mics. Unless you plan to record professionally then maybe you can invest more into a mic. Modmic is a good mic that can be attached to any headphone and has pretty good sound quality.

Yeah y'all have convinced me to do the mic and headset combo. I'm going to spring for a good mic tho.

Thanks everyone. I've seen the error of my ways. I'm going with a headset and mic instead. Going with the blue snowball for the mic and haven't decided on a headset yet but I'll finds good one.

Thanks again peeps!

A snowball might be a bit annoying to have on your table, depending on table space. Personally, I would go with a clip-on microphone to save space, and to not have something big in front of me that can be distracting while playing games.
