No, that was a good series! Definitely not robotech, more BGS-like! Sure it died prematurely, but it's worth watching! It's got Chiggie von Richthofen!
R. Lee Ermey as their training sergeant major!
Kristen Cloke! hmmmm ;)

Watch Firefly anyway. Then when you run out of episodes, watch the Serenity movie to wrap it up.
Also: Superdimensional Fortress Macross and it's prequels & sequels. (the original Japanese versions, now also available with subs & dubs I believe)
Or: Robotech - the American series which is cobbled together from the above and 2 unrelated series, as well as a few unrelated movies. 2nd and 3rd arc aren't really "Space Opera" though, they're more alien invasion stories.

Macross Frontier is in no way related to Robotech Universe. They are both entirely different universe story lines. the two might appear visually similar based on the same concepts and idea's but they do not related to the same universe at all.
PS: I've watched both of all Macross & Robotech...

Anime:
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 (many other gundam series)
Outlaw Star
The Galaxy Railways
Galaxy Express 999
Memories (its 3 short movies, watch the first short movie "magnetic rose")
As everyone else is saying check out FireFly and the movie Serenity (watch the movie after finishing the TV show)

You might want to check out Arpeggio of Blue Steel. Released in 2013, this story shows humanity on its last leg after being invaded by an alien force that chose to mimic WWII naval craft, but one alien sub has defected for reasons unknown. The captain is an excellent strategist not quite on the level of Code Geass' Lelouch but still impressive which, along with a love of WWII era ships and very likable characters, is what's had me rewatch the series a few times.
The anime is short and leaves some plot points unanswered but I've never felt unsatisfied with what they accomplish. There are also 2 movies, the first being a recap and the second being an original story. I did find one person (comment #7) claiming the announcement of season 2 but can't find any other confirmation. You can watch it on Netflix, or here is a Youtube channel that has the first 5 episodes to get you started.

Sorry I have no idea, anyway,
I loved battlestar, how is stargate and star trek compared to battlestar galactica ?

Those are definitely my favourites. I also hear great things about Planetes (anime series) but haven't watched it yet.

There's always Legend of the Galactic Heroes if you want to dig back, which is considered by many to be THE space opera anime. And don't go "oh man, that's 110 episodes" because by the end you'll want more only to discover everything is either a prequel or retelling.

Red dwarf.
a bit old, but great. makes fun of all the ST and stuff
what about Stargate SG1? and it's offseries? great all of them (except the last one - universe, couldn't stand that)
Edit: oops, you saw SG1...

and rightly should
have you seen firefly?
i made the mistake of watching the movie first than the show. it was better...
otherwise the backgroun story was lacking

If you loved red dwarf (or hyperspace) you'll probably love "other space", I stumbled upon it myself just last week and despite my assumption that I probably would dislike the humor based on who's producing it and the looks of the poster/cast I ended up falling in love with it after seeing just one ep, easily the best new comedy of 2015 if you ask me.

Lexx, as nobody has mentioned it yet. It was often dark but it was a really different sci-fi and I enjoyed it.

Go back and watch Firefly unless it being cancelled reallllllly bugs you. It's a great little series, so it would be at the top of my recommendations list.
For anime, I recommend Planetes. It's near future "hard" sci-fi that is more about exploring the concept and character development than action, but still pretty fun none the less.

I've been looking for new series/anime to watch after the current ones I just started (Killjoy and Knights of Sidonia). I just finished Dark Matter and I liked it (2nd season confirmed, but i'll have to wait till 2016 T_T). I watched most of the classics (i.e. all Star Trek series, Stargate, Space 1999, Cowboy Bebop, Yamato, Harlock, Battlestar Galactica...), except some that I skipped because I didn't like the setting (Babylon 5) or because they were terminated prematurely (Firefly).
I'm looking for some fresh stuff (recent years), it doesn't have to be hard sci-fi, but no fantasy-in-space please... any suggestions? :)
Here's a tiny thank you (level 2+, ends in about 22hrs from now):
