Sleepy got some hot action IMMEDIATELY after buying The Witcher.

Not necessary to understand the story. But the game is awesome, I liked it better than W2 (and W2 is great, but completely different kind of game).

It's also a great RPG game but it's a bit older so not as polished. As for the story it's well possible to play W2 without playing the first one - playing them chronologically just takes care of some loose ends and plotlines. So basically, if you can play older titles without bitching about their graphics/mechanics then buying W1 is well worth it, if not then stay with W2 which is a more polished product.

Worth it hundred of times, If you like good and original RPG, with good combat and perfect and dynamic story. The only downside is that it isn't open-world, but it's nothing in face of the other overwhelming aspects of the game.
EDIT: it's usually 75% off, so I recommend you to wait if you can.

I've just finished the Witcher 2 myself and I've now played both games. I freaking love the franchise and I can recommend this game. It's a great RPG with great plot and game play. Sadly as far as I know there's no demo

Hell yeah. It's a bit rough arount the edges, but imho better than any NWN/Dragon Age out there. Great setting and story, the gameplay itself (fighting system especially) is a love-or-hate kind of thing, I personally enjoyed it. Just get through the crappy first act before uninstalling the game, it gets a lot better as the story progresses.

No, it's totally not worth the price of 2 litres of milk.

Witcher is amazing. One of the best RPG games I've ever played.

im the opposite, i think that while the second game is definately a much more polished and 'easier' to get into (mainstreamed) game - and still very enjoyable - the first game has a much better atmosphere. just thinking about the swamps or the outskirts or the temple district... nothing in witcher 2 came close to matching the locations and the atmosphere from the witcher :D
IMO, naturally ;)

Remember that W2 is completely different. It's like comparing Dragon Age to Gothic, both RPG's, but with very different mechanics.

its my favourite game, ever. i just love it, the characters are great, and sure the game is a little rough around the edges, but for atmosphere and story? bloody hell its amazing.
i will say this though... witcher does demand that you have a little bit of patience with it, because you wont necessarily get a full on hit to the story right from the start... but 100% i stand by the statement that by the end of the game, its got one of the most engrossing and interesting and coolest stories i've ever come across, in a rich and facinating world.
