Castle Crashers is fun and it seems like it wouldn't be too intensive. Any Source game really, damn engine could run on a toaster I swear. Let's see, that's all I got off the top of my head.

make sure you have controllers if you play castle crashers though, tooltips show up with xbox keys even if you don't have any gamepads hooked in and are only using the keyboard :<

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri might want to check here with the laptop to see if hl2 will work, if it doesn't, I imagine most of these recommendations won't work.

Some emulators have online/lan play, might be able find something with those, can't see too many steam hits for games if hl2 won't work.

I does have Castle Crashers, and it is indeed an awesome game when played with friends.

Depending of how old is her computer, she may eventually be able to play:

  • Terraria (not exactly a coop, but it's fun playing together on the same server, and you can easily set up your own server.)

  • Magicka (may be slow, has a lot of details...)

  • Neverwinter Nights 2 (engine is quite heavy, may be slow.)

  • Titan Quest & Titan Quest - Immortal Throne

  • Stellar Impact (MOBA style spaceship game. Really good, but hard to find games because of low population.)

  • Jamestown (multiplayer on ONE computer.)

  • Beat Hazard (multiplayer on multiple computers)

  • Realm of the Mad God (MMORPG with truedeath, most of the characters die in less than 30 minutes, old-school graphics, should work on any computer.)

  • Minecraft?

  • Path of Exile? (Free diablo-like. Does work on my crappy computer, but that may be because of special patches...)

  • Serious Sam! (the old ones, avalaible on GOG.com (1/2)

(Not all these game have a coop mode, but they all have a great multiplayer mode including teams, which will let you play with you GF.)

The original Neverwinter Nights had excellent cooperative multiplayer, and it'll run on a weaker machine than 2, weaker still if you don't use the final expansion. I used to play NWN and the original expansion on a K6-3 450 mhz and it ran fine. Final one ran smoothly on the next machine up which was hubby's Athlon 1700+.

Minecraft is surprisingly rough on machines; worth a try but don't be too shocked if it runs like crap.

What genre?

Some suggestions in the meantimes that might run okay on a low end laptop:

Wanderlust: Rebirth
Sol Survivor (tower defense)
Magic 2014 (or any of the previous ones--has 2 v 2 mode which constitutes as co op to me)
Zero Gear (kart racing, not really co-op I guess, oops)
Torchlight II (aRPG)
Orcs Must Die! 2 (tower defense)
Dungeonland
Dungeon Defenders (tower defense)
Magicka
Shoot Many Robots (sidescroller shooter)
Terraria (sandbox)
Trine 2 (puzzle platformer)
Titan's Quest (aRPG)
Civilization V (strategy)

Some of those might be pushing it for a low end laptop, depending on how old it is, but that at least gives you a list to check out

Neverwinter Nights 1 seems to have on-line co-op, apparently. I only played by myself, so I can't say if that's any good.

NWN has an awesome campaign for many people (1-4 or 6 maybe). It scales for the people playing and their level. There are also NPCs you can hire to fill in gaps in your group. It's also LONG and there are lots of add ons to make it longer.

in addition to what was suggested before, try Judge Dredd. it's pretty old, but would do if you want any coop. we found it funny sometimes, but playable.

conlifct: global terror, is pretty low-brow tps, but runs on my gf's netbook, your pc should handle it perfectly.

hl2 is actually VERY manageable. at least it was, before orange box update. i know my old computer would run it, and it had 256 ram, 19ghz and 128 geforce fx video card. i might suggest you get it elsewhere and test if it runs. if so - get Synergy mod, and play ALL 3 hl2 parts together!

castle crashers and rayman origins are fun to play, but they are more fun on the same screen.

oh, and first shank has coop campaign, we decided it was a bit too hard for us, but you could try it out. it's in the bundle now anyway, very cheap to get.

hope it helped.

Most Point and Click RPG's. The Half Life games with co-op mods. Speaking of co-op mods, Far Cry assault co-op.
