How long has it been since you last played quake?

Too lazy to explain it by myself, wiki can do it better:
"Team Fortress originally began life as a free mod for Quake. Development on Team Fortress 2 switched to the GoldSrc engine in 1998 after the development team Team Fortress Software—consisting of Robin Walker and John Cook—were first contracted and finally outright employed by Valve Corporation.[41] At the point of Team Fortress Software's acquisition production moved up a notch and the game was promoted to a standalone, retail product;[41] to tide fans over, work began on a simple port of the game which was released in 1999 as the free Team Fortress Classic."

The fact that is is a mod doesn't make it similar. You kill people. That's about as close as it gets.

Well it officiall is the sequel, that's what the OP said and that's why he's right
In my opinion, it's also inofficially the sequel since it's got the same gameplay mechanics and classes. It just evolved, like every good series should
Edit: Before i forget, i've got the german version of TF2. We don't kill people, they only explode to toys :D

I wish I could try Team Fortress Classic but no one plays that.

You're wrong! I just visited the Team Fortress class and their was around 100 servers. A lot of the servers had 6+ people playing on them. I totally sucked playing a game though, everyone was jumping around so fast that my flame thrower just couldn't do anything :(

Are you sure they weren't just plugin bots who inhabit old multiplayer games? Those exist, they look and play like real players but in reality they're not. Some even talk in text chat and simulate a latency.

I really enjoy the game. I dont give a damn for hats and cosmetic stuff. It doesn't affect the gameplay in any way.
As the heavy says:
CRY SOME MOOOOAR

Carrying on with some more reminiscing... I remember the original TF2 concept. They were going to employ a technology that allowed voice chat to move the avatar's lips in sync with your speech. It was going to be sweet. Also, the game looked like CRAP! The style that Valve pulled of in TF2 is nothing short of amazing and entertaining.

Sounds like it was a random crit that killed you, not an imba weapon. The items that you get in the game don't make you more powerful; they just add more variety to how you can play. For example, the phaser that you mentioned (the Cowmangler, I assume) is basically a rocket launcher that takes longer to reload but in exchange you don't need to collect ammo.

Only reason why I don't like it is because the items people want are hats that look different (unusuals) and in-game earbuds that do nothing.

A lot of people enjoy TF2 (I don't) and they like hats. And achievements. And stats. And piss in a jar.

That is Team Fortress 2 for people who just like to spend their RL money on hats, I haven't done that yet. For those who play the real game, it's fun.

Perhaps but look at it this way people can get good(real) stuff from a game that cost nothing by doing nothing. Like the person above and many who sell their hats for thousands of dollars. In the end games are games they do nothing for us but make our vision worse, increase stress, and occasionally we get a good feeling from completion, ownage, mastery, or MAKING $1000 FROM SELLING PIXELS. Off to trade and get hats. ;)

LOL never played for the hats. I always play because the game is FUN.

I didn't play too much of TF Classic, and none of the Quake mod, but this one is not even remotely "faithful" to the original. Granted, it's actually better in my opinion, though the exclusion of the Civilan class is somewhat lame.
This hat business is what keeps the servers so full and so active. Go see its statistics, and if you're bored, go see the server statistics too (idlers vs active ones). I'm confident tere are more people playing the game than idling. And idling is something even I do when I go to work or play xbox; still better to do on an appropriate server than having people standing at the starting point and not doing anything. TL;DR, I see nothing wrong with what you complain about.

I don't get it, the hats make it funnier :) without the hats everyone would look the same, and that would be boring ^^!
Also someone complained about the weapons, they are wrong! If they can't win from those weapons, it isn't because of their starter weapons, they just suck. I beat people with the normal Rocket Launcher (i train alot for our clan wars :p) and i mostly get in top 3 (my friend gets even higher (with normal flamethrower)) so i don't get the problem there! (tl;dr Weapons don't make you good, skill does)

The flying body parts is probably what made me laugh the most when I first started playing. I particularly enjoyed how they then proceed to show you which limbs are yours after you die :D

Team Fortress 2 (a.k.a. Trade Fortress 2, Hat Fortress 2, Promo Fortress 2, Team Fashionista 2, Team Freetress 2) is a class-based first-person hat collection simulator. Originally it was a faithful recreation of the original Quake and Half-Life mods, but has since evolved from its original design into a pointless virtual collect-a-thon where the player must collect every rare item they can by any means necessary, in order to inflate their ego and show off their E-peen. The original point of the game revolved around playing gamemodes, such as capturing the enemy intelligence, pushing a bomb to the enemy base, or controlling a whole map by Scout-rushing control points, although now all this became nothing more than a small minigame to pass the time with while you wait for more hats and as time went on, more weapons to magically drop into your inventory while doing fuck all on Achievement or Idle servers.
