Have you tried the infinity engine games? (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale & Plancescape?) They are among the finest CRPGs ever made.
Ultima 7 is another top notch one. Combat is not very good, but it makes up for it with its excellent world building.
Legend of Grimrock, both 1 & 2, are great. More focused on dungeon crawling than story, but they do dungeon crawling really well.
Avernum: Escape from the pit is a really ugly game, but it makes up for it with excellent gameplay and really good writing. (If you can stand even worse graphics, then the Geneforge series is also very good)
Drakensang, and River of Time in particular were very good. Uses the same basic rule system as Blackguards, and is set in the same world, but they are a lot less dark.

Indeed, I was about to post that you should look at the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games before I saw Fnord's post.

They're a must-play for any RPG lover.

Dragon Age and Witcher sounds like ones you might enjoy. There is also Two Worlds II if you liked the first one.

Edit: Dragon Age II was for me very different from DA: Origins and not much to my taste I admit.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning perhaps? I haven't gotten around to playing it yet (playing Skyrim at the moment), but I really look forward to it. Seems to be a great game, and can be found cheap at the Steam sales since it isn't a brand new game.

Drop Skyrim and play Amalur. simply for the fact that Skyrim overshadowed Amalur so badly, and it never got the recognition it deserved.

yup, Skyrim seems worse than Oblivion as for me, became less repetitive but not so interesting ( idk why that happened, it just feels like it)

Hehe, same for me. I played Oblivion for years but somehow Skyrim is less interesting. Dunno why.

I don't drop games, and I'm enjoying Skyrim quite a bit! Also it was a gift from my girlfriend, so it wouldn't feel good ditching it for some other game ;)

I will get to Amalur in the near future. After I've played through Skyrim (without major mods) the first time I will play some SG wins that I'm really looking forward to, but after that it's high up on the next-to-play-list!

I thought Amalur lost steam really fast. The early bits were good, combat had a nice "weight" to it, the graphics not only had its own identity, but also looked very nice, but after a few hours, I just got bored with it. There were not nearly enough variety to it.

oh damn it, not again! Why, Odin, why?!
I'm feeling old just because I lose all the interest in games very fast these days ='(

For me, the ticket is restricting the number of games I play at the same time. 4-5 games at most, and preferably games that aren't the same style. Combining perhaps one RTS, one RPG, one point-and-click adventure and one platformer... that way I don't abandon any game for a better "sibling".

I usually play competitive games : Dota 2 + CS:GO + Hearthstone, sometimes tournaments =\
But time to time I really want to play an RPG and can't play the ones I already tasted because I know what will happen next and how many enemies will be there =(

You're welcome! I read several reviews for it before I purchased it, and it really seems like a great game - the only reason I haven't played it yet is lack of time :)

I honestly think that Dark Souls is one of the best games ever made. Period. It has a dark, sad, savage and (actually) good story behind but it just isnt there. Its in the random lines that a few NPC drops, its in the item descriptions, its just there. Give it a try. Its amazing.

Considering you listed exactly one RPG and a lot of ARPGs plus a TBS…
Diablo series?

Dragon Age Origins! That game is amazing! I loved it! I played it so much. It's just so immersive and it is one of my favorite RPG games of all time. If you enjoyed Witcher 2, give the original one a shot, and if it's too old for your taste, The Witcher 3 is amazing.

Lot of good ones listed so far. Check out South Park: Stick of Truth as well. It sort of fits in this category.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is good. Gameplay kind of feels like a single player WoW.

Might and magic 6-8
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura - A medieval fantasy with steam punk and magic
Divine divinity
Baldur's gate 2
Sacred
Throne of Darkness - A diablo like rpg set in medieval japan
Dagger fall - Tes II

In regards to Might & Magic, I think the older ones, down to 3, are still very good. And that's not nostalgia speaking, I played them ~3 years ago for the very first time.

You would need to emulate one, but my ratio favorite series are RPGs. Kingdom Hearts and Mass Effect. People say enough about ME, so instead I'm gonna tell you about Kingdom Hearts.

Some people blow off Kingdom Hearts because they think it looks like a kids game, which in some ways, it is. There are 2 ways to play through this series: treat it like an action RPG and just bust through levels stringing together insane combos, trying to look for that one special drop you need to complete a set ; or you do that while paying attention to the story, which is one of the most heart wrenching things I've ever experienced.

Let me give you an example. KH 2 opens with a character you've never heard of before called Roxas. He's an average kid that has nothing to do with the KH story. You go through a few days of his life and start realizing something is wrong. Time keeps freezing and strange monsters (also never seen before in the series) are attacking him and his friends, but he is the only one who can see them, leading them to think he's crazy. He fights wave after wave of them, trying to see why they are constantly out to get him. After following and trying to put a stop to them, he comes to a realization: his world isn't real. It's a copy of reality made to keep him imprisoned and the monsters are trying to break it down with him in it. He manages to catch a glimpse of his friends, but they have no idea who he is, because in their world he didn't exist. His downward spiral comes to an abrupt halt as he struggles to come to terms with the idea that he was never meant to be, and decides to give himself over to nonexistence to end a life that shouldn't have been.

And that's just the tutorial.

Yeah, never ever heard of Roxas and never heard of Kingdom Hearts Oo
Also can't find it on Steam and it looks like a PS exclusive =(

It's indeed a Playstation exclusive. Hell will probably freeze over before they put Kingdom Hearts on Steam.

A lot of what marpenorj said is a bit wrong, though not by much, and Roxas is actually very important for the story.

I extrapolate to make it a more complete story, and at the beginning Roxas and the Nobodies are completely new and unexplained to the story (unless you played Chain of Memories). I didn't want to ruin the main plot of the game, but felt like I needed to give enough back story to make it interesting :)

Sadly it's not on Steam. Like I said, you'd need to emulate the games with a PS2 emulator (highly recommend PCSX2), but you can play then pretty easily even on lower end computers :) Requires no extra purchases (although I always recommend playing with a controller since it was a console exclusive)

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny
the HD-remake is now really good, but i also recommend the original trilogy (Blade of Destiny, Star Trail, Shadows over Riva) if you don't mind playing older games..
also any game from the Fallout series.
Sacred 2 is another RPG-gem.
i could maybe list some more but, these are definitely some gems in the RPG genre.

I'd recommend Sacred 1 over Sacred 2, though they are both good.
Sacred 1 is just better overall in terms of design, gameplay, UI, and more.
Avoid Sacred 3 like the plague.

Hello there. Try The Witcher, the first one. Chapter 2 its a pain in the ass but it has a nice story and a lot of decisions to make.

Edit because I didnt read it well.

Edit 2, what about Silver?

What's Silver? =p

Damn! I was writing and lost the thing. Here we go again:

Silver its a good A-RPG, its not only the game where I pick my silly nickname it was also, back in the day, the only "western J-RPG". Where the only typical RPGS with a good story (more or less) and lots of action were Final Fantasy this game, Silver, came out for PC thanks to the deceased Infogrames.

The scenarios were beautiful, stunning and the controls were kinda original (at least for me). Basically with mouse clicks and gestures, like in the browers xD

Random gameplay chapter 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i6TfrwThYU

It also has a very beautiful OST, one of the best I've ever heard. Listen to 'Rain'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0sONxLhZLo

Also, the name, Silver, is the name of the BAD GUY. Amazing!

Its not on steam, but you can find it extremely cheap on GOG during sales time.
