Hi everybody! I think I have a good idea that would bring more people to steamgifts and even more gifts! It's basically some sort of reward system for users who create giveaways. For example, if a user creates a giveaway that costs 5P (lets say Poker Night at the Inventory) he gets the same amount of points, but squared. In this case the user would get 25P, which is not so much but still some kind of a reward. Then, on the other hand, users which would create a pretty expensive giveaway like The Elder Scrolls Collection, would get roughly 10000 points, and thats pretty nice! I know, everyone should be VERY GRATEFUL for any kind of gift they get, but this would stimulate many users to give out more awesome gifts like Serious Sam 3: BFE, Assassin's Creed Revelations, etc (just take a look at the wishlists). I apologize if I sounded greedy, ungrateful or someone else already had this idea (?!), this is just something I came up with yesterday. ;D

And then in other hand a lot of user will make 100 fake skyrim giveaways to get fast and free points to enter every giveaway

Good point, but they would get their points only if the gift is received.

can still be abused using multi-accounts.

Not if you get reward only for public giveaways and only when winner confirms that he/she received the game.
Group/private giveaways usually already have some kind of incentive - like promoting the group or a website...

Well I dont think the points squared thing is a good idea as it has flaws, but I do think that some sort of reward could encourage people to give more. Maybe even a virtual level system on the site would motivate people more :p

Not a bad idea.

Each giveaway you successfully complete will give a number of reward points based on its value, for example 1 for $1, 6 for $5, 13 for $10, 30 for $20, 70 for $40 -- some kind of formula which gives more for higher level but not hugely so, so possibly a power but less than the 2 that the OP suggested. (For example power 1.2, rounded: $1 - 1, $5 - 7, $10 - 16, $20 - 36, $50 - 109.)

Going up levels will require certain number of reward points. For example:

  • Level 0: 0 points (everyone starts there)
  • Level 1: 1 point (anyone who gave anything away)
  • Level 2: 15 points
  • Level 3: 100 points
  • Level 4: 1000 points

(Probably better to make the difference between levels not huge so people can see the next one is not too far off.)

You could also give more points for the levels, but not significantly so. For example 5% (current value) at level 0, 5.5% at L1, 6% at L2, 7% at L3, etc.

Nice, but let's not complicate this too much with levels, big advantage of steamgifts is that it's very simple and easy to use. There should only be some kind of a formula that doesn't give you too less or too much. And in the end, we can't even be sure this will ever be implemented in the site, so... :/

But levels and achievements are fun. Just getting some points for giving away something is boring. I want a "Fortix king" achievement when you make fifty $1 giveaways. I want a "must've robbed a bank" achievement for giving a gift worth more than $100. I want a "thanks for Skyrim" achievement for giving away Skyrim. These would be cool incentives.

Implying It's better to ban people than making a ludicrous system that would let you get 10k points for making fake giveaways?

This would open up the site to all sort of cheating. Make a group giveaway, two of your friends enter, pretend you send the gift, bam: free points. Ten thousand of them.

Simplest solution would be to limit to public giveaways. That would help encourage more of them, and not giving the best games only to groups.

Only awarded on public giveaways then. But still stupid in my mind.

Bad idea. It won't bring more ppl neither produce more giveaways by current users, but for sure will become another potential abuse hole. And why to transform charity into "do this, take that" thing? Charity should stay charity. Those who're ready for such action, cannot be stopped by recieving nothing in return. Just the feeling that somebody will enjoy or at least will try to enjoy the game you gave away is more than enough.

I agree and disagree. On one hand charity is nice. On the other hand, I think that incentives will work, and would mean more and better games being given away.

It just won't. Steamgifts already is living and breathing and working all right. Need more games? Buy them. Need more points? Buy Skyrim and stop wasting 60p each time it's being given away.
Achievment system is, on the other hand, is perfect idea. Some ranks, levels and all the stuff for sure will encourage folks, while producing absolutely no abusement .

purely cosmetic stuff is fine, funny ranks, a star next to your name, etc. it's the other stuff that worries me.

Sorry, I thought you were against incentives in general. I'm definitely for levels and achievements. Just coming up with new achievements can be tons of fun. (Well, okay, if the mods don't like that kind of thing maybe it won't be fun for them.)

The best way to encourage people to make more / better public giveaways is for everybody to take the three extra seconds to say 'Thanks' when entering a giveaway :)

Why not? I'm sure a lot of people who give away games also regularly enter giveaways.

Because that might bring people who wouldn't gift stuff out of kindness to make giveaways by appealing to their greed, I guess.

What does gift means?

An action which gives other people free stuff without wanting anything in return.

THIS is something you want in return.

Meh, a lot of people here are having 300 points for a long time, that's good enough.
Besides, this thing would kind of ruin the point of giving.
