Hey guys, I'll be changing my phone tomorrow for a galaxy S3 because I've had an Iphone for 3 years and I'm tired of how many restrictions apple put on it. Contract is also done and my Iphone is smashed beyond belief.

Anyways, any suggestions on what I should do with it, like mods, apps, widgets anything really. I'm new to the Android platform so help out a brother would ya ?

widget locker, titanium backup (you gotta root for this), then freeze all those useless telcos, samsung bloatware. I should know, I am using an s2.

Any advice on rooting? I know with the Iphones, there was a bunch of different programs to jailbreak it.

Visit xda, they have tons of guides there. There's one very basic thread which 'works for almost all phones'. From what I recall, you just need to load a zip file to external sd and root from there. No pc required even. When you used stock for a while, maybe you would like to change and again xda has plenty for you to choose from. <-- This is known as flashing, what the guy below is saying. But this will void your warranty unless you get a jig to reset your counter.

PS: Before you freeze anything with titanium, google and be sure they are apps that are safe to freeze. Anyway, freezing is a great way if you aren't sure, better than uninstalling.

I've been using Android phones for two years now and I'm not quite sure... what's the benefit to rooting the phone?

I assume you get more freedom on the OS. Kind of like how Cydia on the Iphone would modify it so much, you wouldn't even recognize the OS anymore.

well i was like you in the past, but after i decided to root, i froze all the bloatware and saw a significant increase in batt life. For normal users, that is reason enough.
For those that like customizing, after rooting, they can flash custom firewares (there's even kitchens for you to cook up one yourself).
Still the best is titanium backup, you can schedule it to run and upload backups direct to dropbox or box etc. If you lost progress for a game, run it's individual backup. If you for some reason wiped your phone, run the entire full backup and you get every damn thing back + their settings!

You can run more things on the phone that would normally not be able to run (because of no root performance). This will allow you to OC for example, or modify things that would not be possible before. If you flash an rom, you can add more functionality.

Yeah I know jailbreaking an Iphone voids the warranty but if you restore it before going to a technician, there's no way they could know you did it.

Is it pretty much the same thing in this situation or will they know even if I restore ?

jailbreaking is like rooting. But for iphones, when you restore you lose jailbreak. For droids, you can unroot sure. And they won't know.
What I meant is flashing, if you flash custom firmwares, every time you do so, the counter increases by 1. You need to have a jig to reset it. The techs are able to check, hell you can even check so yourself (for my s2, going into download mode will show, maybe s3 is the same). But I think recently someone came out with a kind of fix to reset it without a jig. I am not certain how well that works thou.

Does flashing void my warranty though ? If so, I really don't know if I would bother with it.

It does but you can easily get it back to stock and it will appear to the manufacture that you haven't root/flash.

Root it, flash CM10 or AOKP, and then run Apex Launcher.

Well I haven't rooted, and here's a list of apps I recommend based on that:
Astro File Manager, Dolphin Browser (and Dolphin Jetpack addon), Google Drive, Dropbox, IMO, Gmote, My Boy! Free (gameboy advanced emulator), Play Music (if you use google music. If you don't: start), Where's My Droid, Yellowbook. Also don't use the bullshit Navigator Deluxe GPS they include, use the Google Navigator, as it is 10000 times better. There's probably more that I use, but those are the cool ones. Oh and don't forget to go nuts on the Live Wallpapers, I use Galaxy Core, but there are tons of cool ones.

This. I have an S2 and the only real reasons I've had to want to root it are to get wireless tethering, root access to the filesystem for specific apps, and kill bundled apps -- thus far, I still haven't rooted it (don't really need the root-access apps, and found a perfect workaround for the reason I wanted the wireless tethering... bundled apps are still annoying).

Apps I dig:

Google Play Store (because... yeah, kinda need it)

Life things...
Alarm Clock Xtreme Free
Contact Sync for Facebook (FB's own app sucks at this)
DayWeekBar English
Evernote
Eye-Fi (if you have one of these cards, it's awesome)
Facebook
Fancy Widgets
Gmail
Maps (Google)
Pulse News
Mirror (I have this one right next to Skype... )
NoLED
Parcels
Push Ups/Sit Ups
sleepBot Tracker
SugarSync
TED
TuneIn Radio
adidas miCoach

Misc. tools...
Andie Graph (TI calculators -- requires a ROM)
Bubble (bubble level)
Google Goggles (the best QR code reader and also nice for looking up random things in stores)
Metal Sniffer Metal Detector
Nzb Leech - usenet downloader
Shazam/SoundHound
Smart Protractor
TeslaLED Flashlight

Programming/sysadmin...
Want to add AIDE here, but the free features went paid....
AndChat (IRC)
Battery Monitor Widget
DroidEdit Pro (920 Text Editor is a decent free alternative)
ES File Explorer File Manager
Hacker's Keyboard
No Signal Alert
PAW Server for Android (not perfect, but closest I could find; kWS is great if you don't need PHP)
Speedtest.net
StudioKUMA .nomedia Manager (exclude folders from being searched for ringtones)
Volume Ace Free

Audio/music creation/practice...
Audio Evolution Mobile DEMO (multi-track sequencer)
CAUSTIC 2 (fucking amazing)
RD3 HD
Score Master Lite

Graphics...
Pixel Art editor
Plouik (drawing app) (crap interface, good tool)
SketchBook Mobile (SBM)

Gaming...
Humble Bundle Android app
Coins (chill puzzle game)
ScummVM
Steam
SteamGifts

ADW launcher is great. Or root it and put there some custom rome .. like CyanogenMod. apps... I personally really like Shush! . it's handy and it should've been in the default phone (everytime you set your phone to mute/vibrations, it asks for how long you want to mute the phone, and then it automatically gets back to the normal settings, great when you are forgetting about turning your phone again after appointments and stuff :3

I bought an S3 some weeks ago for a trip so I haven't really been tinkering with it. But I LOOOOOVE it and like people say, use the vanilla stuff for a few days to get used to the UI.

I'd recommend XDA Dev and also checking out Godprobes' post. I have to skim through that myself and check all the links out!

I suggest taking a look at the Nexus 4 as well. Excellent specs for around two-thirds of an S3 unlocked. I ordered mine today!

just make a good backup and then have fun exploring your new phone knowing that is shit goes wrong you can always fastboot load your stock .imgs and your back up and running

also look up cifs if your lucky someone has compile the modules for your phone and then you can mount windows shares as if they wore on your phone... That means you can listen to all your mp3s and videos without having to download anything this is super cool for tablet

Dont get the S3, the S2 is cheaper and its one of the best mobile phones in my opinion (i have it), You can root it by yourself with 4 or 5 easy steps (i did it with mine) and it is excellent, i dont have time to write a detailed post now, but i will do when i get back home :)
Edit: I wouldnt change my S2 for an S3.
