This can be done via local text files, but it'd be way easier to keep track of my blacklist if I can add a private note to each user stating why I blacklisted them. This could also work for whitelists, though I don't know why you'd ever need it for that. This would allow me to keep up with users who rename themselves, and it'd also help with adding a temporary ban kind of mechanism to the site. For example, I'd like to block people once they've won a giveaway but only block them for a short time just to make sure other users win. Again, this can be done using personal notes instead of the site, but there's no reason not to have this be a site feature. Notes could be private and optional.

but there's no reason not to have this be a site feature

Reason:
Work for cg = will not be done.

This is a reason, I give you that. Still, why have this forum if not to actually give feature suggestions.

you can do this with ESGST

This is a browser extension. It is not what I suggested.

Extension has 2 issues:

  1. It's an extension. This is inherently a security concern and also doesn't work for everyone.
  2. It's local. Info isn't stored on my account and is instead stored via extension, so if I log in via multiple devices/browsers, it's not going to work.

Extensions are not a valid reason not to implement the feature.

it supports syncing

giving you a way you can have what you want right now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
as it will never become a site feature

Sure, if that works, great, but I've read of users getting banned over use of that extension, and it hasn't been updated in 2 years, either, not even a bugfix update. I'm not against using extensions, I use it, but the site owner should be willing to listen to suggestions, especially since the suggestions forum exists.

If you know what else Rafael may add to extension besides those many and many things it has already, then you have the link.
To get banned for using ESGST? Rudiculous

Its up to you to add me to blacklist over what i asked you. but please respect the group rules and attempt to fix your value difference before entering any more giveaways.

You're spamming. Stop using this forum thread to complain about your group rules. You're blocked because you're rude.

its not my group, and you accepted to join based on the rules of the group.
I am sorry you feel that way, but it does not change the facts.

If it's not your group, then stop trying to moderate the group and move on. Stop harassing me.

i only use blacklists to blacklist people who blacklisted me so i dont spend 3 days solving a puzzle to find out i'm blacklisted by them lol.
but it's a good idea, you can always make a file somewhere though with profile links and reason.

For most people it would be full of petty and inane stuff like.... This person made 3 topics in 3 days, this person has an animal as a profile picture, this person likes to drink coffee, this person does not give away full value new release AAA titles. Stuff like that. But it is a good suggestion.

I thought you wanted like a note to be sent to someone you blacklisted when you blacklist them so they know why you blacklisted them. lmao

I think someone already suggested that feature once before and was shot down because it would introduce unnecessary drama.

That would be great, some people tends to rename way often to be able keep track.

You could potentially just keep track of steam id numbers, but it'd definitely be easier to manage these notes if they were on the site side.

I might be alone in this opinion but I think that any new feature that improves the experience of blacklisting someone has the potential of turning into encouragement, and you generally don't want to encourage people to blacklist cos that could lead into increased toxicity in the community.
The way I see it having an official blacklist function is a positive because it makes the mechanics of blacklisting clearer to the users and also reduces some of the load from support, but anything beyond the bare minimum functionality runs the risk of decreasing the friction in the action of blacklisting, and that friction found in the fact that you as an user have to take care of keeping up with your own blacklist and why you blacklisted certain individuals serves as a dissuasive measure against excessive frivolous blacklisting. So it makes perfect sense to not make any improvements unless it can be proven to be an unquestionable positive thing, which is probably not possible, or only make teaks in the system when they equilibrate the balance of power dynamics, aka something that can bite the blacklister in the ass if they go overboard.

Private notes could be an unlockable feature once you reach a certain contribution level. That'd help mitigate potential abuse of the feature. That said, wouldn't making blacklists more wieldy make users be nicer to each other?

Maybe, that's for CG to decide.
And about that question, I honestly don't know, after all I'm mostly just speculating. I happen to generally dislike the concept of blacklists themselves and see their inclusion in this site as a necessary evil aimed to placate the user's desire for filtering out those whom they dislike, but that's my personal opinion and nothing more, so while I'm gonna take any chance to rationalize that improvements to the blacklist system is actually something bad I also don't deny that I'm very biased in an unapologetic way.
