How are Kings Bounty The Legend and Armored Princess? I've been trying to find a decent tactics style game, and from the videos I've seen, Kings Bounty looks pretty fun, just wanted to ask everyone here at SG for their opinion. The reason I'm asking about these 2, they are on sale on IG right now.

And also, if anyone can suggest some good tactics style games I would appreciate it! :)

Loved NWN, need to install it and play it again, been a few years... Same with KotOR, loved the 1st one, never finished the 2nd though. I have Dragon Age, but I haven't really started playing it yet, I need to do that heh

I love difficult games. BoI, SMB, the like... but KB is just painfully hard to play.

I found them to be incredbly difficult to play, as in they had confusing controls and were just overall clunky and unenjoyable.

I'm with you on this one. The tutorial was incredibly inadequate. If you don't already know how to play this game before you start, the game will never teach you.

I disagree. I had no problem learning the game, without any prior knowledge.

Anything in particular that bothered you? I found the controls intuitive.

I've played just The Legend and it is quite nice. It feels like playing Heroes of Might and Magic campaign. The game is quite long btw.

They are pretty good. But I think the battles in Heroes of Might and Magic are more tactical.

Well, combat mechanics are identical. I don't see how HoMM battles are more tactical, when they are pretty much exactly the same(even some units have common "talents" in HoMM and King's Bounty).

Comment has been collapsed.

It's been a while since I've played HoMM, and maybe I'm being tricked by my memory, but I remember that in HoMM, some skills or spells made all the difference in the world and could really turn the tide in a battle. In KB, I fell it's more about having the biggest army with the strongest units you can find. Spells and skills are kinda secundary. Other than that, combat is pretty much identical. That's why I think HoMM is more tactical: it's not all about numbers.

Well, I played as Mage in King's Bounty so I would like to disagree with you that spells are only secondary. I've beaten a lot of Overpowering and Impossible heroes thanks to my spells and the spirits of rage.

I guess it all depends on your style of playing ;)

I think King's Bounty games are great. I'm playing now KB: The Legend for the third time on the hardest difficulty (+ as paladin) and it's still fun! But if you won't get the right mood to the game, you won't like it.

And great pro is also a long playtime (from 30 to 60 hours to finish it).

^this. I agree with him. With everey hour and fight it´s getting harder and you will need to save before each fight. It´s really challenging but a lot of fun =)

A couple tactics style game on steam are: Shining Force, Shining Force II.
They are both excellent Tactic/RPGs. A bit dated (Sega Genesis games), but still great.

Shining Force shows it's age with the chapters, but SF2 is perfect and transcends time.
The game's would easily be picked up by modern smart phone gamers (if they knew what gameplay was) and assumed as modern titles.

Kings bounty is from the same guy who did the initial might and magic (and also heroes of might and magic) games. It's really like HOMM just more RPG,less strategy, however the fights are almost the same.

And the studio that made the games, Katauri, also made Space Rangers 1 and 2, both wonderful games.

The same guy? NOPE
Katauri purchased the license of the title and did those nice 4 games.

BTW the genre is TBS (turn based strategy) just in case someone search for other titles on the same genre.

the first kings bounty is also von Jon Van Caneghem, they bought the title, but its not a total new game. Its still the world he created with the units you know from most games.

You said it's from the same guy (Jon Van Caneghem) and he was not involved at all on these new games.
I've played the original King's Bounty (single game) and they're not similar at all (well the leadership), they are more similar to some old HOMM. But using this leadership recruitment limit.

I said "Kings bounty is from the same guy..." Where is your problem with that?

Permalink

No problem, just a wrong statement, also illogical, there are really games done by 1 single guy, but these aren't the cases :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The statement is not wrong. Kings bounty is from the creator of might and magic and homm. It's his fucking world he created,he was the mind behind this. Ofc there are always more ppl involved in creating a game, that is not the point though.

Indeed. I mixed your sentence with the reply and assumed a global mistake. I apologize.
But that may confuse to people whom mix the new ones and the old one. JVC is not involved on the new homms and KBs

Yep, the games are great. Also Crossworlds is good too, but it's kinda confusing on if it's a standalone that includes the original AP or just the expansion. Haven't played the newest one yet to say anything about it.

As for other good TBS I'd suggest Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. It's combat is like a mix of puzzle and turn-based strategy. :D

I too would like more info on Crossworlds. It is strangely absent from the current Indie Gala store bundle, and it has never been included in a bundle period. What's more, some online stores have it while others do not (despite carrying all other King's Bounty games).

I would love to see this go 66-75% off somewhere so I can complete my KB collection.

I'm pretty sure Crossworlds is the expansion to Armored Princess with 2 extra campaigns and a few more units for the original AP campaign. The GOTY edition of crossworlds includes the original AP game and all the extras of the basic version of crossworlds.

Strange. I'd understand if Warriors of the North was absent, as it was made by a different company, but Crossworlds is just Katauri's enhanced version and semi-sequel of Armored Princess, and should be available along with the other 2 games.

King’s Bounty: Crossworlds is the expansion for King's Bounty: Armored Princess role-playing game. Includes “Orcs on the March” expansion, the two new independent campaigns “Champion of the Arena” and “Defender of the Crown” and a convenient editor with help system. This editor will allow you to create additional content for the game and alter it in any way you wish.

Key Features:

  • 2 brand new campaigns (Champion of the Arena with boss battles in a gladiatorial tournament and Defender of the Crown with battles in unique tactical arenas with a random selection of enemies and allies)
Orcs on the March – extensive update to the original King’s Bounty: Armored Princess
  • New creatures to slay or use in combat
  • 70 new items, 8 new item sets, including one for the pet dragon and 3 component artifacts.
  • 7 new quests allow players to continue their journey
  • 50 new abilities and skills
  • 13 new spells

Yep, Crossworlds is basically Armored Princess Deluxe, but AP still has some purpose, as for some reason the Steam version of AP (and Legend) are Mac compatible while Crossworlds is not. Not sure about retail. So I bought the Platinum just in case I ever get a Mac and want to play games on it.

Although if you don't care about Mac compatibility at all you can just skip Armored Princess and go straight to Crossworlds. You can wait until it gets bundled or goes on sale individually at Steam for $4.99/75% off.

I enjoyed playing Legend - played a LOT of hours over the summer (but my profile doesn't reflect that time played offline) - played a little Armored Princess. If you haven't played them, I would suggest it, especially if you like HOMM but want a better game, lol.

I didn't read through all of the answers, but if nobody has mentioned it yet: There is a demo available on Steam for Armored Princess.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Try out the demo to see if you'd like the game (since Crossworlds doesn't seem to have a demo), but I'd recommend skipping AP altogether and waiting for Crossworlds (aka AP GOTY) to get bundled or hit 75% off on Steam. Only buy AP if you care about Mac compatibility or can't wait for Crossworlds to go on sale.

These games are so damn addictive, once you start playing you wont want to stop. I have Legend, Armored Princess, and Warrior of the North and once I see a deal on Crossworlds I'll be getting that to finish the collection. These are great games and I recommend them to anyone who likes turn based rpg games.

Playing KB: Legend, very addicting game, but a little too long for my taste. First playthrough, logged 105 hours on highest difficulty and still have no end in sight. Controls are pretty intuitive, you use 2 mouse buttons, so it's hard to get confused. I highly recommend it.

I got about 70 hours of play out of KB: The Legend, I thought it was pretty fun. For $1 that's pretty good value. I'd buy it, even if it's not for you you've wasted only a bit of time and $1.
