So the city of Madrid (If you don't recall it reciently ran for the 2020 Olympic games for like the zillionth time in a row and miserably failing again) whose major is this educated lady is trying to pass a law prohibiting things ranging from juggling or watering the plants to prostitution and drug dealer.

Some of the infractions that this legislation will punish include also panhandling (From 750€ fine on) juggling, practicing skill tricks, skateboarding or feeding animals in the street (Up to 750€ fine) also things like watering the plants, shaking carpets or using benches for (sic) other than sitting will be fined too with quantities around the 750€ mark.

Also they have sneaked a couple of rules against demonstrating on the street and long-lasting protest, which could be fined too. This is an smart move on their part considering that the 15M movement could have presented a menace to their ruling and abuses or that it could be used to silent the demonstrations coming from doctors and other health profressionals in order to defend Public and Universal Healthcare.

So I simply wanted to post this so that you people can see what a Olympic Games candidate is doing behind the scenes. Also I find kinda hilarious that all this regulations are going to be enforced while they very same major is looking for loopholes in order to allow the construction of the so called Eurovegas and is figuratively licking its promoter's ass and taking their trouusers down.

Anyways, sources.

I've been there once(coincidentally at one of the economic downturns there which I assume contributed a good deal) at least in the touristy areas in tourist season its nothing but(well there are a good many other things too obviously) buskers panhandlers beggars or squishy toy pig salesmen on every (10th or so) corner. its like the obnoxious "subway singers" we have here but hundreds(well tens) of them. she's probably talking about those guys. like the bench thing I bet thats for these who take up the bench doing their human statue schtick all day. Its better than robbing to be sure(So its better than italy with their pickpockets) but its not the greatest thing for a city's image none the less.
(so its not so much fascism as the way every single other country sweeps its problems under the rug when they host the olympics. england had missile pods on apartment building roofs. china arrested all the homeless and banned spitting and several dozen other things in a similar list to spain's. I think america "cleaned up" somehow when we last had it too)

The fascism thing was really to be in order to concordate a little bit with the Independent's approach and to make the topic more catchy. Anyways I've been living here most of my life and haven't seen anything that extreme as you say. It's true though, that I only spent 3 years in Barcelona and never lived in Madrid, so that could have something to do with it.

Anyways, about the panhandling thingie and stuff, don't you think it could be better if they adressed the root instead of baning or fining (seriously WTF) it?

yeah I exaggerated (because internet. its like an accent but hyperbole instead of talking funny). but yeah if you're expecting the government to choose an actual solution over sweeping a problem under the rug for a few weeks(bonus, the easy way gets them fine $ too) spain must be vastly different than america indeed
(mostly I was just disappointed it wasn't actually about a fascist party in spain. those guys are funny)

Spanish here, currently the politicians who are in power do not represent even half of the population, and these politicians are destroying something that a lot of people died in the war. Inflict punishment by the laws are not tough enough.

No politician in Spain represent half of the population. También murieron muchos por evitar lo que hoy tenemos. El fin justifica los medios?

I wonder if this will be on the Daily Show with John Stewart or on the Colbert Report this week?
Kinda sounds as crazy as some of the laws in Singapore that I have heard about. For those of you who do not remember it, there was a US kid caned there for doing stupid teenage stuff. It was so popular they hid an easter egg about it in the first Shadow Warrior game.

Well, a bit of awareness won't really hurt. But I don't really think Spain is that significant of the international panorama to be featured there.

Been awhile, but IIRC, he spray painted something publicly. "Graffiti". Which was an insult to the art of it. But yeah. I believe that was it.

Oh, really? Well then obviously he should have been shot in the kneecaps, had his arms snapped in three places, had his fingers and toes broken, bamboo shoved under all nails, and 2 weeks of Chinese water torture.

Obviously..

To begin with.

+1 we(place of business) get graffitied all the time. The worst part is how people call it art but it isn't their property to doodle on and how is "spiky dicks" art to be preserved? Every time you sand it off or repaint they just put it back and it makes the whole place look like shit. paint your own damned building if you want to scribble on the walls. and get off my lawn. damned kids and their sideways hats

I suggest skipping all that warmup stuff and just buying a bottle of ginger beer(discworld) >:)

I suggest you get a good graffiter and pay him (many will even do it only for the cost of the spray cans) to pain there something you like. That things are usually respected.

Sorry, I am getting used to the forum and replies.

To answer your question I can point you at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Fay

Yeah... kinda dates me. But then again back in the day the original Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior games were DOS 6.X or Windows 3.1 games. I think if you continue with a google search or play the first level of the updated version that does not require DOS you can find the easter egg I mentioned. (Dang! That game is nearly 20 years old?!?!)

Suffice it to say... I guess stupid teenage stuff can be seen from different perspectives given the spirit of the times and what has been previously addressed or what parents and authorities sometimes turn a blind eye too. For me this story of this kid was my first awareness of perceived fascist laws. I guess politicians are better at remaking stupid things than hollywood or other entertainers reuse plots and stories.

Hah.. Yea... I have actually thought of teaching English in Japan.. However I am still far behind on learning Japanese to really do it. I know a lot of people that do teach English in Japan without knowing the language but I do not feel right doing that.

If I am going to move into a country, live there and work there, I should at the very least know the primary language.. ya know?

Meh, not necessary. Knowing it is certainly a plus and trying to understand their culture and stuff. But well, not compulsory.

if nothing else it makes it vastly more possible to actually live there(whats easier learning the language or making 127.6 million learn yours?(or even just finding one guy to o business through who'll translate for you and hoping hes decent enough not to abuse having so much power over you)) and if a student has questions about what you're teaching it must be better to be able to understand them. how does teaching translations work if you only know half?

or did i miss the point and this is the sort of class where they already know textbook english perfectly and want to learn the way its actually used by native speakers to make communication work better? idioms and such?

Yea.. I know that. I know of a program I can join that will make it a lot easier for me to do it but I know some people have ill feelings towards it. That being the JET program. ( Japanese English Teachers program. Really shocked some of the perks you get.. assuming they are still doing it as my info for that program is a few years old. )

I just do not feel right personally about going to a country without being capable of carrying a conversation. At the very least I need to get the basics down for sure though.

The woman looks like she just needs a good fuck. She's too uptight. Someone should slip some MDMA into her drink, woo her, seduce her, and - after massaging her head to toe - make passionate love to her for a whole night and day, while listening to some Ravi Shankar.

Ana Botella it's a f***ing shame from all prespectives.

The situation of Spain (the world one too) its extremely distressing. I'm actually lucky and i've got a nice job 6 months ago, right in the middle of the crisis. My english is completely imperfect, but i actually got the job thanks to be able to use it much better than the average.

Sure all our politicians & corporations are absolute psychopaths, but I have to say we deserve this. We got a REALLY recent history episode, where our grandpa/ma's died on fascist hands, and all we gained in the last decades, got wasted the last 20 years. And it's just cuz we allowed it. Everything that's happening today, was already happening in lately 90ies and the begining of 2000's. It was just not so widespreaded, maybe not SO obvious, but people kept voting the same assholes over and over no matter what. Our grandpa/ma's were SO brave, and we've become one of the most coward and stupid nations in the world.
