Confirmed. There was a topic about this but I don't remember where exactly it was. Some guy made a statistical analysis of "thank you"-rate, wins and losses and the conclusion was that there must be a strong correlation between posting a "Thank you"/"Thanks"/"TY" and your wins. I usual don't comment much because I don't want to cheat giveaways but I tried on some early ones and it worked!

nope.. the only giveaways i won are the ones i said thanks to.
Rest of them i didnt..
so now i reserve my thanks only for AAA games xD
kidding

That's... not nice imo, sorry... If somebody passes you the salt and you simply say thanks you are only being polite, if somebody holds the door for you and you simple say thanks you are only being polite, if somebody makes a giveaway and you simply say thanks some people will call you a thank bot or copy paster? :S

This situation would only compare if everybody in the entire block would say thanks if you hold the door or pass the salt. In the situations you described only the affected person (in SG would be the winner) is saying thanks.

Lots of people just say thanks because they dont want to get black listed or they think it will increase the chance of winning. It is also illogical to thank someone simply because they are giving something away, you could congratulate or encourage him, but thanking him makes no sense. All this supposed politeness has become a meaningless mechanical copy and paste system.

i am not.. i mean .. i feel good that people take enough time to say thank you . but most of the times there are same 4- 5 guys who post thank you on every g/a that's going on.. take your analogy..won't you get tired if you passed sugar, salt and then pepper to group and only one guy keeps saying thank you, after sugar , after salt , after pepper too...

your analogy is bs. if you win the game and the ga creator sends it to you. then you should thank them. it makes it personal. just adding your 10 letters to the pile of thankyous means nothing. the odds of the ga creator even seeing ur comment are near zero on public high entry ga-s

you might as well say thank you when ever someone sends you a message on facebook or a text because.. well so you and others can feel good.

No. Thanking is not required to enter and win giveaways. The winners are chosen randomly.
However, thanking a giveaway creator is just common politeness, and most of them will be happy to read your comments. I'd also recommend posting something interesting rather than just the generic "thx" "ty" or "thanks".
I personally try to comment something creative on every giveaway I enter, or even sometimes on giveaways I don't enter.
Thanking is pretty much just showing gratitude towards the giveaway creator. The way I see it, if you can't bother to say thanks, don't enter the giveaway.

I was going to make a new topic, but I think this is relevant. With the new key delivery system, what's the best way to thank the gifter for the gift? I left a comment on the completed giveaway, but is there a way to send a private message? Or should I perhaps comment on their Steam profile if it's public?

No, there is no requirement for thanking the contributor in the giveaway's comments section. Some users actually blacklist those who do and reroll the winner if the user does, whereas others blacklist and reroll if the user does not. These are both arguably abuses of the system and SteamGifts is not obliged to enforce it. Only comment when you want to.
Refer to my thread if you're interested in discussing this topic further: http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/Yno8L/giveaway-comments-pointless-or-praiseworthy

I do occasionally on my giveaways, but they aren't very valuable to me. Anyway, as I already explained in the thread, I don't think whatever satisfaction I get from having them on my giveaway is worth the price.

No it will not increase your odds of winning, but I do in fact go through mine, no matter how many and respond to those I feel like. And I also appreciate them if given by a human or a bot. I like being thanked, no matter how meaningless it may be to some.

Not really....but are you willing to take that risk

You decrease the karma when you necro a week old thread. ;)
