What architecture does each of these CPUs have? That will have a larger effect than either of the other metrics.
EDIT: The higher stock frequency would be better for most current games than the core count and will likely be easier to overclock. For more information on a processor's overall performance, look up it's SPEC ratio. That is an industry standard benchmark developed together by Intel, AMD, and other chip manufacturers.

Haswell has around 40% greater IPC. Vishera is somewhere around Nehalem in terms of single core performance.
They're probably fine for gaming but I wouldn't recommend it. Single core performance from 2009, things like this, and frame latency make it a no go.

I tend to compare to benchmarks of the cpus, you can compare them in the sites below.

Don't get an AMD CPU. In the graphiccard area they are decent competitors but they seriously lack behind in the cpu department. For Gaming you are way better off with Intel. 4vs6cores: 6Cores is the future. Don't let anyone else tell you something else. Every upcoming Game will future 6/8 Core Support as we already seen with all current Consoleports. And the Diffrence btw 4cores and 6Cores is significant in Games that support such (which again every upcoming pc game will). i5820k is basically the same price as i4790k. Yes the i4790k has higher default clock but both cpus can be overclocked easily and have a similiar overclocking limit.

It's not just the overclocking potential but when paired with a Z97 motherboard, there's an upgrade path to an i5 or i7 down the line.

First of all, I would not get the 6350, or the 4350, as they really do not make sense for the difference between the non-xx50 series. If your budget is really strained, and you cannot get at least the FX-8320 and a good cooler (cooler master hyper 212 (evo or newer)). And you do not feel like overclocking the Pentium G3258 on a Z97 Motherboard then go for the 6300 and a not-stock cooler and think about overclocking later.

Just get the 6 cores but if you are planning to SLI or crossfire in the future I suggest you to save and buy intel CPU instead

Both of those are faster than mine :( Either one is good. Make sure you have enough RAM as well.

Yep, 8GB in a 2x 4GB stick is the current norm until budget around $1500+

The 9590 is something that even a number of AMD fanboys ignore, the best processor in the lineup ATM is the 8370e if overclocking, otherwise the non "e". Though once mobo and processor reach $350-450 intel is the winner.

Since we're talking cpu's here, I'm currently looking at AMD FX-6300 tu replace my I3-2100. I never planned to upgrade my PC but dragon age inquisition happened. Is the FX-6300 good enough? I'm strict on budget since I just buy R9 270x, bought it on impulse.

I need to decide which CPU would be better for gaming. I'm deciding between 2 now. First is 4-core @ 4,2GHz, second is 6-core @ 3,9GHz (the 4-core is slightly cheaper). Which would be better? Are at least some games able to utilize 6 cores (or at least do you think they will be able in the near future)? Thanks for your answers.
