It totally depends. Public giveaways I most of the times run for an hour, sometimes half a day and max a day. Whitelist or group GAs I run for 3-4 days to a week to give as many people as possible a chance to enter. And last but not least private forum giveaways I usually run for 2-3 days. Longer periods have proven to be a nuissance to keep the thread alive.
